Boulder City Railway Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • This station was once the busiest in all Australia. A small train, the "rattler" was connecting Kalgoorlie, the Goldfields and Boulder. Until recently the "rattler" still ran for tourists, but it's out of service now.
You can visit see the train at the museum though, aswell as artefacts and photos from those busy days.
The museum usually is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-2pm.
Admission is 2 AUS$ if I remember it correctly.

    statues on the salt lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lake Ballard is located around and hour and a half out of Kalgoorlie and around 50kms out of Menzies. A few years ago ( for the Perth international arts festival) renowned sculpture Antony Gromely created 51 statues and placed them through out Lake Ballard. Each one of the statues represents every person that lives in menzies. It will take you around 2 1/2 hours to walk around and see all the statues. so take LOADS of water and sunscreen.

one serious hole in the ground
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Super Pit is just on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie. You can view the goings on at the Super Pit any time of the day from the lookout. before you go though, check out the blasting times from the tourist bureau. Its interesting to watch. this is the reason Kalgoorlie was made...GOLD!!! when you look a the little Haulpacs (Dump trucks) moving around its hard to believe that the wheels are the height of a 2 story house!!

    Boulder Pioneer Cemetery
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walking over the old cemetery and reading the inscriptions on the old, neglected graves brings us close to those early gold rush times. Many young guys died after accidents in gold mines, tombstones were set by their "mates" or "fellow employees" because they had no family around. Many children died at a very young age. Quite moving.

Location: on the road to Kambalda/Norseman.

You can pick up booklets on the trail from the Visitors office and the cemetery office. The cemetery is open on weekdays from 9.30am – 11.00 and again from Midday to 3.00pm.

    Broad Arrow
Broad Arrow is 38k north of Kalgoorlie and 633 east of Perth.
It is a gold Ghost Town still with one hotel.
This was built in 1876 and featured in a movie in 1971 starring Goojie Withers.
This is not on the main highway, we made a special trip to see a couple of Ghost Towns.

    Boulder Town Hall
Built in 1908, the Boulder Town Hall is quite a landmark on Burt Street. During its history it also operated as a Theatre and evidence of that is the old stage curtain which still survives complete with the original pulley system where Dame Nellie Melba is reported to have performed. This type of curtain was provided by Phillip Goatcher who was well known in his time for luxuriant drop curtains used in major theatres around the world. The curtain is open for viewing every Wednesday from 10am – 3pm and on the 3rd Sunday in the month.
