Kalgoorlie Things to Do

  • Induct yourself into the Mining Hall of...

Welcome to the hugely enjoyable Mining Hall of Fame, which showcases not only the technical side of mining, but also the larger-than-life cast of visionaries, entrepreneurs, robber barons and rogues that it has spawned. One of the things that I most like about Kalgoorlie (and, for that matter, my adopted home town, Johannesburg) is that they are...

  • The secret life of skimpies!

A much heralded feature of Kal's pub scene are its 'skimpy' barmaids. For those of you who have not yet been exposed to Australia's unique take on staff uniforms in pubs, a 'skimpy' is a young lady who (wo)mans the bar in nothing but her underwear. This is a wildly popular practice in the remote rural towns of inland Western Australia, and is...

  • Bring your wide angled lens for the...

Well, there are no prizes for guessing why the Superpit is called the Superpit! The Fimiston Pit (aka The Superpit) has no 'Guiness Book of Records' claim to fame in that it is not the deepest or widest pit in the world, and neither is it the only one located smack bang in the suburbs of a town. However, at 3.5km long x 1.5km wide x 400m deep, there...

In the Miners' Hall of Fame, guided tours take you underground to a depth of 35 m into the original shafts and galleries. Kalgoorlie Restaurants

  • Hogs Breath Cafe

Hogs Breath is a great casual café, and a good Aussie chain of restaurants. In Kalgoorlie.. on a Sunday night, we were looking for somewhere just to have dessert and coffee.. easy usually, but not in Kalgoorlie. We stopped at Monty’s but nothing tempting there, asked a local and found even the Dome was closed so we drove around and on the way to...

Kalgoorlie Transportation

(work in progress)Because of the 'fly in, fly out' (FIFO) contracts that many mineworkers operate on - and the steady flow of consultants and other service providers coming in and out from Perth - the airport in Kal is an unexpectedly busy place. The good news is that there are many more flights between Kal and Perth than you would usually expect...

The Indian Pacific passes Kalgoorlie on its 4352 km long journey from Sydney to Perth. I took the train from Adelaide to Kalgoorlie and enjoyed the trip a lot. Just had a place in the "cheap" seater section, but it was comfy enough for me. There's a lot of legroom, the seats do recline and there's even a shower in the carriage!I had to change the...

This I started to put in my must see activities, kids would love it, but if only a short time in Boulder then its just a train ride with nothing very interesting to see.
I will post the 3 other photos I took to show the little I could photo to say "been there, done that"
On the history side in the 1890s the goldmine loop had over 60 passenger and goods trains using it every weekday.

Kalgoorlie Off The Beaten Path

  • Boulder Pioneer Cemetery

Walking over the old cemetery and reading the inscriptions on the old, neglected graves brings us close to those early gold rush times. Many young guys died after accidents in gold mines, tombstones were set by their "mates" or "fellow employees" because they had no family around. Many children died at a very young age. Quite moving. This is a bike event which is held in June each year. The race was first held in 1928 and begain in Menzies, which is 81 miles north of Kalgoorlie with 24 riders virtually doing the ride on what was pretty much a dirty track. The event changed its name a couple of times but today is known as the Menzieis to Kalgoorlic Classic. The route has also improved a great deal since then. The fastest time so far (2007) has been 2 hours 28 mins.
