    Returning to Perth via the main highway you will pass a sign that says "Lake Clifton Lookout". Taking a detour here will bring you to the shore of one of the many salt lakes that lie between the highway and the coast - part of an extensive chain of important wetlands all down this southern region.
    Lake Clifton is one of the loveliest, and is definitely the most unusual. Apart from its serene beauty and stillness, the lake is unique for the formations of thrombolites that ring its shores.
    What are thrombolites? Rocky mounds of calcified micro-organisms that are a direct link to the earliest forms of life on earth. In winter they are underwater but you can still see them clearly from the board walk that goes out to the summer lake edge.
    Cape Bouvard winery just near the boardwalk does excellent lunches and their wines are not a bad drop either.

    Lake Clifton lies within Yalgorup National Park, an area which encompasses coastal tuart forest as well as part of the lake sysytem. Wildflowers, kangaroos and birds of all sorts abound here. There are marked walk ways and nature trails.
    Visitors are particularly asked not to walk on the fragile salt crust of the lake edge - a boardwalk will take you out over the thrombolites and you will get a good view of them without damaging these extraordinary structures. Scientists believe that it was formations such as these that were the first living matter on our planet and their formation was the catalyst that turned a barren world of rock and water into the living, breathing beautiful planet we live on today.

    The Cape to Cape Walk Track follows the spectacular South West coastline from Cape Naturaliste at the northern end to Cape Leeuwin at the southern end.

    At approximately 20km's per day this is a 7 day walk following miles and miles of ever changing coastal scenery.

    Margaret River was very much a farming place and you still see farms with cows, sheep and venison but these days, more farms are being converted into wineries and Colin at Stellar Ridge wines told us that there's a new winery being opened up every day in Margaret River, which of course is good news us wine lovers as the price of wine will no doubt be coming down ,...but bad news for the farmers. Anyway this fella wanted to be on vt, so who was I to argue lol.

    Around Margaret River there's lots of bush tracks and forest. I love nice tree lined roads so couldn't help taking a pic of this.

    Caves Road is very aptly named. This tourist drive follows the line of the coast in almost its entire length from Dunsborough to Augusta. You will travel through Karri forests as well as the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. You will also pass by many vineyards, lookouts, coastal walking trails, picnic areas and arts and craft stores to name but a few attractions.

    If you follow the Caves Road south to Margaret River you will find some of the prettiest Karri (world's tallest species of trees ) forest in the Western Australia. In the heart of the forest is the Great Boranup Maze. It has been described as a 'leg-stretcher and a mind-bender for travellers weary of the open road.

    Just down the road from the cows hubby spied a kookaburra. We heard them plenty of times laughing at us when we were bushwalking.
