Fans of motor racing are sure to head for the track while in town. Basic facilities, but a great night out for sedan/sprint car racing. Keep an eye out for the schedule of racing on the website, or the town's local paper.
The breaks along the stretch of coast between Capes Naturaliste and Leeuwin, centering on Margaret River are famous with surfers all over the world but there's a beach for everyone here . Pristine fine white sand and turquoise water - miles and miles of it - not even the most popular beaches are ever crowded and you don't have to go far to find a place you can call your own. Whilst swimming at totally deserted beaches is never advisable - there are strong rips and currents all along this coast, not to mention occasional king waves - there are plenty of places to choose that are safe for children and adults alike.
Some of the best (and my favourites) include
Gnarabup - a sheltered bay, sometimes weedy but with a cafe and changing rooms. Popular with wind surfers.
Gracetown - northfacing bay (unusual on this west coast) - good calm swimming and a good surf break as well.
Hamelin Bay - something for everyone - swimmers, surfers, fishermen, walkers, snorkellers (the bay is known for its stingrays) and maritime historians (no fewer than 8 wrecks lie under the waters here. A shop, good change rooms and a very popular campsite
Equipment: Don't forget the sunscreen and your beach towel
The Margaret River are is ripe for fishing and bag limits do not apply. Herring is probably the most frequently caught fish in the area and can be found near rotting seaweed. From mid February until the end of May, Salmon 'run' along the coastline as part of their seasonal migration and can be caught by boat. Tailor is caught from surf beaches where they swim in rips and channels. Kingfish and Dhufish is found more around the cape area. Other fish caught in the area are flounder, flathead, snapper, groper, tarwhine, skippy, pike, mulloway, whiting, squid and cuttlefish and there have also been some marlins which have been hook - not to mention sharks.
margarets is home to the anual margaret river masters which is part of the pro surfin circuit, not to be missed by a surfer of music love there is a huge concert with some of the biggest bands around to acompany it
