Northam hosts a variety of events throughout the year. There is the monthly markets. Also annual events such as the Flying 50, Avon River Festival and Summer Siesta Concert Series with the council working on several more annual events for the years ahead.

In 1933 there was a notable scandal which occurred in Northam. The town's entire Aboriginal population were gathered up by the local police and dumped in the Moore River Settlement. The official reason given by the Northam Shire Council said they had scabies and were a health risk.
