Perth International Airport (PER)
ATXtraveler profile photo
ATXtraveler 2028 reviews

Perth, Western Australia is unique for many different reasons, but in particular, this city's airport is truly the most isolated international city on Earth. It is very difficult to reach Perth by Air, although it is constantly being made easier through multiple international carriers creating flights here.

Western Australia's airports are actually equal flying time to Singapore as Sydney. Each being a 5 hour flight from this isolated city!

Perth however is a major launching pad for alot of Southern Hemisphere Australian travel, housing the international legs of Air New Zealand, Air Mauritius and South African Airways. Perth also serves Asia with Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Royal Brunei, Garuda, Singapore, Thai, Tiger Airways and of course Qantas.

domestic flight

We arrived from Uluru at the Domestic Terminal and left for Singapore from the International Terminal of Perth Airport. There is really a huge distance between these two terminals. One should be aware, specially when coming to Australia from abroad and having a connecting domestic flight.
All customs (passport and luggage) and Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service will be handled in the International Terminal. Sometimes both checks can be very time consuming; added by the transfer by shuttle bus between the terminals one need really much time in Perth Airport.

To/from
Perth Airport is located about 15 km’s outside the city of Perth and about 30 km’s from Fremantle. Both terminals are serviced by taxis and shuttle buses to/from accommodations in both Perth and Fremantle.

We had a taxi to our accommodation in Applecross for about AUD 35,-. Shuttle buses to Perth/Fremantle are about AUD 15,- per person.

There is also a public bus running between the city centre of Perth and (only !!) the Domestic Terminal.

Immigration and customs

It takes time to complete immigration and you must have a visa, but it takes longer to complete custom checks, because they are thorough. Everything is scanned, and the machine can identify organic material.

Every arrival must complete a customs declaration form. If in doubt, ask or put yes. Do not try to bring any organic material, including cheese, wood carvings or drugs, into Australia without declaring it to customs on arrival.

They have these cute beagles who sniff out the best hidden contraband, and then customs give you a real going over, but really politely. The possible fines are humongeous.

SingaporeAirlines

2 airlines offer this route. Singapore Airlines & Qantas.

The direct route takes about 5 hours. This is the shortest route from Singapore to anywhere in Australia.

A few other airlines also fly this sector, with a transit stop. They are Malaysian Airlines (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Garuda Indonesia (Denpasar, Bali) and Royal Brunei Airways (Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei).

Virgin Blue Boeing 737

I choose to fly with Virgin Blue during my Aussie trip as the price were very competitive and less time consuming compare to road or train trip.

To obtain the lowest price you should plan your trip a bit in advance. From my personnal experience, the flghts were pleasant and ontime (Perth - Adelaide - Sydney).

This airline operates since 2000 and have continously extend its route network. Nowadays the fleet of Boeing 737-700/800 linked all major Australian cities. Other DownUnder destinations are available in New-Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu and Cook Island.

By Air :

Perth International Airport is 12 km North East of the city centre. Perth has two separate terminals one for International and one for Domestic flights. Airport-city shuttle buses are available to transfer between the international and domestic terminals.

Jandakot Airport is just south of Perth. It opened in 1963 and is one of the busiest airfields and largest aviation training base in Australia. The are three major flying schools which operate at Jandakot, The Royal Aero Club, China Southern West Australian Flying College and Singapore Flying College along with a further nine training organisations. Jandakot also provides access for services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Services, CALM Forest and Bushfire Patrol and the WA Police Air Support. There are three runways and the airport has excellent flying conditions for most of the year.

Location : 16 Eagle Drive, Jandakot Airport

Please note that you will be required to throw away any food that you carried with you from outside West Australia. This even includes food from Sydney, even fruits.
This quarantine is in place to isolate W.Aust. from outside patogenes.

One of the easiest airports in the world to get in and out of, plenty of space, good roads and friendly staff. This is the sunniest state capitol on earth, there really should be more people here.
