Every year in August people line up on the banks of the Swan River to watch a great boat race called the Avon Descent. We were lucky enough to see alot of contestants coming into the finish line on our recent wine cruise. So here's a couple of shots.

After getting my OWPadi in the Great Barrier Reef, why not to go further.

I find a gread scuba diving center offering great deals and an happy professional team and instructors. You could follow all PADI courses there and choose diving spots according to your levels:

    - the Perth's No 1 island diving location Rottnest Island. May be you will be lucky to dive among dolphins, sealions and passing humback whales.

    - shark dive in the WA Aquarium (AQWA). may be it is not very natural

    - H.M.A.S. SWAN wreck dive lying in 30 metres of water.

At the end I get my ADV and could enjoy more diving trips as The Red Sea

Everything is provided, but don't forget your good mood ;-)

I've tried sandboarding twice in different locations. I was thrilled by the speed of getting to the bottom of sand dunes. *LOL*. Such activity may be avaliable in day tour packages (eg, on the way to Pinnacles).

Track suits preferred. Bring along your camera. Sand boards are provided. Need to wax he boards before using it though.

    Triple A division, women

I got an up close look today at my first Western Australia Beach Volleyball Tournament, held at Leighton Beach in southern Perth.

Nadine has some friends that take part in the tournament, that host both boys and girls teams. There are 3 divisions. Starting from Single A, being for ameuters division, Double A, being for the experienced division, and finally, Triple A for the masters division.

Tournaments start from 730am til about 230pm and may run later. There are about 14 nets set up along the beach, with games going on every one of them. Games are serious but also laid back, with everyone knowing each other. Not to mention half of the players are hung over from the night before.

*This picture was taken of a Triple A divison match between 2 female teams. I found the girls matches to be just as exciting as the guys. The guys were ofcourse more athletic, but the girls seemed to be more graceful...

Bicycles are a popular way of transport to discover Rottnest Island at your own pace. It is more enjoyable by the fact that no private vehicles are allowed on Rottnest, and service vehicles are kept to a minimum.

So let's go for a ride. After mountainbiking on my Swiss Alps, I try the islandbiking. What a change especially in the scenery...

    Go see a Dockers game!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • pinkbear

  • Subiaco oval hosts the Perth AFL (Australian Football League) matches. Also known as aussie rules, the game is pretty different to both soccer and rugby. It's a contact sport so it can be a little rough (like rugby), but I think its way more skillful. The team I follow is called "The Dockers" (from Fremantle), they play pretty exciting football. Dockers fans can be fanatical - but only in that they make a lot of noise, which makes for the most amazing atmosphere. Imagine nearly 40,000 fans going wild (don't worry I've never seen any of it get violent). Going to the games can be soooo fun. If you're in Perth during footy season don't miss the opportunity to catch a game.

Aussie rules is a winter sport played from April (I think) through to September. They let you bring in things to make you comfortable (with the exception of alcohol and significant amounts of food). It can often be pretty cold in the stands - even if it's a nice day - so bring something warm to wear.

Public transport to and from the ground is pretty good (it's walking distance from the Subiaco train station).

Above all, scream your lungs out with cheers like "GO THE DOCKERS" or "C'MON FREO" - you'll get way more out of it.

    Exotic Diving with Whale Sharks

  • Whale Shark - Perth
    Whale Shark
    by Gwynneth
To swim with a whale shark (Rhincodon Typus), the biggest member of the shark family, will be an unforgettable, mind-blowing experience and I hope to take it soon!

Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia is an exotic dive destination. The waters are warm and tropical, the constant sunshine and phenomenal marine life... but best of all, the whale sharks are almost guaranteed in March and April.

Whale sharks arrive in March coinciding with the coral spawning (or red tides as it is known to the locals). Most of these visiting whale sharks are immature males. It remains an intriguing puzzle why this particular section of the population visits our coast.

Whale sharks will grow to over 12 metres in length, which is about the size of a large bus!! They are a TOTALLY protected species.

    Bring Your Common Sense!

    - Boats must observe a 250 metre radius 'contact zone' around whale sharks. Only one vessel at a time may operate in a contact zone, for a period not exceeding 90 minutes, and during that time must stay at least 30 metres from the shark.

    - If a second vessel arrives at a contact zone, it must stand off at least 250m. Any further vessels must stay at least 400m away from the fish.

    - People swimming with whale sharks must not touch or ride on the animal. Swimmers must stay one metre clear of the fish's head or body, and four metres away from its tail flukes.

  • The Webb Ellis Cup - the Holy Grail for the rugby - Perth
The Webb Ellis Cup - the
    Holy Grail for the rugby
    by Gwynneth
    A little history...

Rugby World Cup was conceived in late 1983 when the Australian Rugby Union and the New Zealand Rugby Football Union wrote to the International Rugby Board requesting a World Cup tournament.

Australia's Sir Nicholas Shehadie and New Zealand's Dick Littlejohn were elected joint committee chairmen. 1987 was chosen as the most suitable year to stage the inaugural Rugby World Cup.

The IRB approved for the inaugural Rugby World Cup to be jointly staged in Australia and New Zealand in May and June of 1987.

Rugby World Cup 1987 consisted of 16 invited countries with both semi-finals to be played in Australia with the final and third/fourth play-off matches to be both played in New Zealand.

Rugby World Cup 1987 was broadcast to 17 countries and had a cumulative audience of 300 million people.

From this small beginning, each subsequent Rugby World Cup has been a roaring success with each tournament registering commercial and broadcast records to clearly be positioned as the world's third most popular and biggest sports event behind the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup.

    ... And now...

Unlike the 16 invited finalists in 1987, Rugby World Cup 2003 will involve 20 teams with the eight quarter-finalists from 1999 gaining automatic entry.

The best thing about World Cup Rugby 2003 is that this year Perth - Western Australia, is being put on the International map by being a host City! Some have said Perth is dull and unexciting... but then that could be their state of mind!

England vs South Africa was the one to watch on 18th October 2003. If you would like to see more of the World Cup Rugby Calendar this link will take you there.

A very popular entertainment park. Adventure World is the major theme park in Perth. Ther are over 30 different rides and attractions which include a Turbo Mountain roller-coaster and a Grand Prix go-cart raceway. There is also Australia’s largest outdoor swimming pool.

You will also find Bungee West here.

Watch a Test match at the WACA. It is the fastest pitch in the world, so Cricket lovers can enjoy shots going for 6 over third man, or alternatively lots of batsmen being hit by the ball at 90 MPH. Not for the faint hearted. Do be aware that while the Cricket can be interesting, it can also be very short (Particularly for England) so have contingency plans for days 4 and 5. Excellent weather makes rain interruptions unlikely, a bonus if you are used to watching in Manchester

    Suncream and a sunhat.
