Hillarys Boat Harbour, Perth
Australian's remember Langley George Hancock as Australia's richest man who married his Filipino housekeeper 37 years his junior. By doing this he destroyed his family! Australians all followed the bitter public feud which spanned over 20 years, hearing nightly on the news or daily on the radio, accusations of murder, drug charges, court cases, illegitimate children and betrayal, all brought about by marrying his young Filipino wife, Rose Porteous.
I was surprised to find a Memorial to Lang Hancock in-front of Hillary's Boat Harbour, Sorrento Quay. The plaque on the rock was commemorating the 50th anniversary of the flight Lang did in his Auster J/I Adventurer aircraft. This was the flight when he discovered iron ore when flying very low over the hills which now known as Mount Tom Price. He saw ore seams in the hillsides, then he did his own geological survey and found massive reserves of iron ore. Now Mount Tom Price is known for its huge open cut iron ore mine.
He died in March 1992, aged 82 years.
Sorrento is a northern coastal suburb of Perth where we went to meet a VT friend who lives near there. We had arranged to meet at Sorrento Quay, a very easy spot to find and it had plenty of free parking!
I really loved it here! I found there was something for everyone - a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, lovely Hilary's Boat harbour and a sheltered swimming beach that looked a safe place for the children to have a splash in the water!
We walked along the boardwalks admiring the expensive boats and the lovely reflections in the water!
It was lunch time, so I tried a fish 'n chip shop here. Service was quick, food was good. We sat and ate our lunch on one of the seats under the shade of a tree and enjoyed the time we had here!
Markets are held here on the 3rd Saturday of every month, 9am -6pm
Hillarys Boat Harbour is about 20 minutes north of Perth and is a fabulous place to go. If you have kids it has water slides and the best fish & chip shop in town. You can travel to Rottnest Island from there also. It has nice accommodation and an underwater world too for the kids. The shops are quaint tourist ones. It has a yummy ice cream shop also. Oh and Jetties Restaurant is my favourite. You can have a buffet lunch or dinner and view the lovely sunset over the water. I have more pix on my Mullalloo page. Here's the link...
Hillarys Boat Harbour
Hillarys Boat Harbour is a great place to visit and has lots of cool stuff to check out. Its where AQWA is, where you go for the whale watching and has many great shops and restaurants. It also has a great beach for the family to enjoy and safe for little kids. To top it off there is even luxurious accommodation available should the need arise.
This is another nice place aussirose & hubby showed me. It's mainly a marina where you not can admire lovely yachts but also go shopping & dining.
Boats to Rottnest Island depart from here.
