Strip off and enjoy the swell at Swanbourne!

I can't believe that at the time of writing this tip, there wasn't a single review of Perth's own nude beach, Swanbourne!

Swanbourne is a perfect place to relax for a few hours, and swimming nude in the Indian Ocean on a baking hot summer day is an absolutely amazing feeling! Added to that, you'll never have experienced such unwavering eye contact - perving on a nude beach is considered extremely poor form, so you'll probably never have been looked so squarely in the eye!

Nude beaches are amazing places for people watching, and, if nothing else, you certainly come to appreciate why there's such good business in Brazilian waxing! You'll also probably emerge with a surprisingly positive self image, since it's a myth that nude beaches are only populated by the young, lithe and beautiful: chances are that there is always someone who has more wobbly bits than you do!

Just make sure that you bring along a high factor sun screen and reapply it regularly, as the West Australian sun can be vicious, especially on the bits that aren't used to being exposed (I recall walking like John Wayne for a couple of days after one of my first visits).

If you're lucky enough to live in Perth, the only problem with going to Swanbourne is that slight risk that the person you encounter across a conference table may last have encountered you in the buff ...!

No photo accompanying this tip for obvious reasons ... and for those same reasons, I would suggest that this is one place that you should keep your camera under wraps!

I went to Perth on a business trip in 2004. My co-worker and I went for three weeks. One weekend, we visited his colleague at his house overlooking City Beach. We had lunch at a restaurant overlooking the ocean. My colleague had to put his feet in the Indian Ocean, his first time. Although it wasn't my first time, I joined him.

Perth City offers a lot of beaches for all the beach lover in the world. You can go to the famous Perth City Beach, Cottesloe, Scarborough Beach, or Rottnest Island which is 45 minutes from Fremantle.
You can snorkell in Rotnest Island and Cottesloe, learn to surf at Scarborogh Beach, or just relaxing at city beach.

Action At OBH Sunday Session
4 more images

After a swim at Cottesloe Beach you must walk over to the OBH for a few cold beers and listen to the music. This is a tradition at Cottesloe and you will have a most enjoyable time.
A very popular spot on Friday and Saturday night and the Sunday afternoon session is a sell out. We visited last sunday , a mid winter afternoon and the place was buzzing.

City Beach Shore Break

Located just 8 km west from Perth, and about 2 km south of Scarborough, City Beach is definitly one of the most beautiful beaches you will find along the Perth Coast.

I was really suprised by some of the surf i saw coming thru this beach. There was a powerful shore break, that thundered when it broke upon the beach. But for such a powerful shore break, the water was crystal clear.

The beach is situated between two man made rock groynes, with a life saving observation tower sitting ontop the southern groyne. The beach is patrolled by the City Beach Surf Life Saving Club. The club was established in 1924.

In 1999, City Beach won the Best Beach Award, because of its crystal clear water, great sand, and for the safety provided by the Surf Club. The beach is also another popular spot for some of Western Australias beach volleyball tournaments. Its definitly worth a visit if you have the time.

Rockingham Beach

You have to travel a little way from Perth to get to the beaches but it’s worth the effort and there are plenty of places to choose from going either north or south from the city. Some of the more popular ones are at Rockingham, Cottesloe and Scarborough

There are so many lovely beaches in Western Australia.

Cottesloe Beach is lovely with its fine sand. And interestingly the ground/floor is cold to touch even in beginning of autumn.

Other northern beaches that we passed by include Sorrento, Trigg, Scarborough and City Beach.

South Beach

The best thing to do in Perth if the weather is warm is to go to the beaches, for a swim, for a walk, or to see the sunset over the ocean.

The beaches in the Southern suburbs are protected by Cockburn Sound, and are predominantly flat and safe to swim in. The beaches in the north such as Trigg and Scarborough offer waves for people who like to surf. Cottesloe beach, one of the most popular beaches in Perth, has medium to small waves and cafes and pubs on the shore.

The Lookouts and Beaches as described in 'General'
I loved the City on the Beach aspect of Perth .. it is the only place in Australia that is THAT close I think ... I really loved the atmosphere and found the people to be sooo friendly.

The Beach. They are not too crowded in November, Early December and March. Everybody thought it was too cold- but it was warmer than most Meditteranean beaches in August!!
Umpteen spotless, quiet, white sand beaches- most with facilities to change etc. Cottesloe has the posers but Scarborough is pretty good too. For a quieter experience go to Whitford in the northern suburbs (about 20 minutes past Scarborough).
