Don't get fined on the trains!

My friends in Perth told me that I can just board the trains without buying a ticket, as the ticket conductors dont come on often.

I was in Fremantle, trying to get back to the city centre in the night. The train came and I havent bought my ticket from one of those self-service machines. I was tempted to just run in w/o a ticket. Boy, was I glad I didnt! I mean, it was only A$2 something. I bought the ticket and still caught the train. Shortly later, I saw the train conductors. They were already handing out fine slips! The fines were like A$100 or 200 I cant remember. But please remember to board with a ticket! ;)

Bus and Train

We found getting around Perth equally convenient by either bus or train. One suburb which we wanted to reach could only be arrived at by a combination of the two (which we thought could be tricky) but when the train let us off at the 1/2 way destination, the bus was already right there waiting for the next leg of the short journey. It was great having the transport so well organised and synchronised like that.
The freeways seemed extra wide or more multi laned than we had in Victoria at the time and seemed quite efficient.

In Perth center there is a free bus service called CAT. These busses show up every five to ten minutes and bring you anywhere in Perth center up to Northbridge.

Going to Fremantle and other surrounding cities can be done by lightrail.

If you are planning to go further then i would reccomend a car. It gives you much more freedom.

The best way to get around is with your own car. But I'm not a lucky one to have a 'drive licence' so I take the public transportaion (Bus, Train)
Well, to visit all the places in South-West of Australia take a Month-Pass by West-Rail. It cost around 130AU$.

GETTING AROUND PERTH METROPOLITAN AREA:
In Perth we have one metropolitan train service from fremantle to Perth. Service is every 15 minutes. This services all towns north of the river - claremont, shenton park etc. Unfortunely we don't yet have a service for the southern metropolitan area

The bus network covers all of the metropolitan area of Perth, schedules are available for each bus number.
We also have cycle tracks and cyclists share the road with motorists

the train system is perth is very simple. its like one big crossroad - with the centre of the city as the middle. one track goes from south west of the city atr fremantle to north east at midland. the other goes south east at armadale to north west at joondalup. ptices aren't that bad and you can buy multiriders at a discount price if you have a isic card. mulitrioders are good for either 10 or 40 trips throught either one or two zones. depending on the distance you want to go
I suggest you buy a one and two zone ten trip multirider if you are going to be in perth fro a while -they are worth it

Note: after midnight the train back to Perth operates only every hour! However Hamburger Hill serves great burgers in the meantime!
