The iron ore trains come into town daily with raw unprocessed iron ore from the mines further out. They can haul up to 336 carriages (known as cars) and usually have between 2 and 6 engines haulling the entire train that can be up to 3 kilometres long. It can take up to 20 minutes for the train to pass through a crossing.

Follow the tide out at a walking pace. As the water receeds, huge pools are formed and the fish that wern't fast enough to make it out through the narrow necks to open water are trapped. For beginners, you have a better than even chance of catching a whiting or two for dinner. I don't eat fish but I've heard they make a tasty meal. Bream and flathead can occasionally be caught at this time too. The best bait is squid or prawns which you can get frozen from any supermarket or service station.

Just watch out for shovel nosed sharks, stingrays and the odd stonefish (highly poisonous) which hide in the shallows. If you only walk on the sandy bits and don't go deeper than calf height, you should be ok. Oh and don't do what I did and answer the mobile before casting out. Whilst I was chatting on the phone, a starfish decided to take advantage of my bait lying on the sandy floor and tried to eat it. I had to peel the starfish off my hook!

The workhorses of BHP Billiton

Go to the Tourist Information Centre in the main street and they can organise a bus tour of the plant. I took someone who grew up in the area with me and he actually thought it was quite interesting.
