 | Rockingham Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 45 | | Point Peron is a high rocky point sticking out into the sea connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. Most of it is a nature reserve with fenced footpaths going up, over and around it. There's an old wartime bunker/lookout on the highest point with views out across the bay if you're up to a steep climb (hard work if it's a hot day). The limestone rocks by the beach have been worn away by the pounding of the sea and are now fragile but very beautiful. The photos don't show much sand, but there's a lovely sandy beach just around the point with a layer of rocks at tide level making rock pools. Further around again is a large sandy bay, very shallow. Walking around the point (the shortest way) takes about 45 mins. But it always takes longer cos you have to stop and look. If you look out to sea for long enough you will see dolphins. Popular for fishing all around the point. There is a new sealed carpark and toilets but no other facilities here. WARNING. Blue ringed octopus which have poison deadly to people are sometimes found in this area of the world. They are shy, non-agressive creatures and will almost certainly hide from you, but don't try to pick one up! There is a smooth, wide, concrete cycle/footpath running along the coast from just north of Rockinghma Beach, south to Port Kennedy. It doesn't go around Point Peron but cuts acoss the isthmus and carries on around the bays on the other side. Most of it is flat and suitable for wheel chairs/pushchairs but some places through the dunes are hilly. Spaced along it at regular interals are BBQ ares with shaded gazebos over picnic benches and free electric BBQ's, toillets, showers, drinking fountains, and children's play areas. Parts go through the dunes (native bush) and there are many places with stunning views. Please stay on the paths in the places where the dunes have been revegatated and fenced off, dogs should be kept on a lead. You are likely to see some of wildlife; all sorts of birds including hawks, pelicans, cormorants and other seabirds, small reptiles such as gheckos and other lizards, and often dolphins in the bay. It passes the Naval Memorial Park, Rockingham Beach, Palm Beach deli and jetty, Rotory Park, the ferry to Pengiun Island, the causeway over to Garden Island (Naval Base, not open to the public), Trent Island and much more. There are cafes/restaurants along the way. The last beach at Port Kennedy is a nudist beach. Leave a Comment Directions: The path runs form the grain terminal a few kilometers north of Rockingham Beach and follows the coast south to Port Kennedy (about10k)

Trent Island is a sand bar. A few years ago, you had to wade through a small channel of waist deep water to get there, but now the sandbar has moved and filled in the channel. You can walk all the way around it in less than 20 mins.(we always find something to stop and look at so it takes longer than that) The centre of the island is used by nesting sea birds and you are requested not to walk through that area. The shores are full of shells, corals and other odd items. There are often pelicans and other birds. It's a popular fishing spot with the sandbar extending a long way out into the sea. Wind surfers and kite boarders can often be seen here, fascinatingly beautiful to watch. On the mainland, just by it, is a picnic area with shaded tables/benches, free electric BBQ, water fountain, toilets etc. Although it's only a short way around the island, it's a hot hard walk on soft sand in the summer. Lake Richmond is stunningly beautiful, calm and tranquil. The 1,000m x 600m lake and it’s surrounds make up a 40 hectare environmentally protected area, home to much native flora and fauna. The day the photo was taken we many heard many types of frogs calling; banjo frogs, clicking frogs, slender green tree frogs and others I don’t recognise. We saw pelicans diving for fish, cormorants and wading birds. The Anne Mueller environmental walk surrounds the lake and includes boardwalks going out across the wetlands into the lake. There is picnic area at one end of the lake with shaded tables/benches and free electric BBQ's. Naragebup environmental centre is situated just across the road; here you will find explanations of rare structures called Thrombolites (fossilised remains of ancient living creatures) which are also in this area. At the opposite end of the lake to Naragebup is a large steel viewing tower offering stunning views across the lake. PLEASE REMENBER TO PROTECT THIS AREA Much work has been done on native replanting of the bushland around the lake, (You can see the plastic rabbit shields around the new plants in the photo) it is fragile and easily destroyed by people walking on it, stick to the paths and boardwalks. WARNING Another reason for staying on the paths and boardwalks is TIGER SNAKES. Tiger snakes are seriously poisonous, but not likely to cause problems if you don't disturb them. Look where you're going and stay on the boardwalks and paths even in the summer when the wetlands area is dry enough to walk on. Leave a Comment

This is popular spot for fishing, especially summer evenings (photo taken winter lunchtime). The deli at the end of the jetty sells take away food and drinks, ice cream, bait and fishing essentials etc. I've been told that the scriptwriter for the TV program Neighbours worked here as a teenager and modelled the deli in Neighbours on it.. Brave (older) children do '"bombies" jumping into the water from the jetty railings. Leave a Comment Address: The Esplade. Rotary park is a nature reserve and picnic area with picnic benches under gazebos and free electric BBQ's. It is designed so that you can see the birds with wooden walkways going out over the lake. Many native birds can be seen here including pacific black ducks, eurasian coot, purple breasted swamp hens, little pied cormorants, black winged stilt and white faced heron. This park does not appear to have a name. It's a lovely park, with a large lake that takes about 10 mins to walk all the way around. There's a new picnic area with tables, shade, and free electric BBQ's and large playground for small children. Seagulls will steal your BBQ if you move awy while it's cooking! Many different types of ducks and waterbirds live on the lake. Some of them are quite tame and will come and beg for your picnic and can be hand fed. Rockingham is a great day trip if you have kids....so much to do. My kids had a lovely time and of course met a new friend (Nezz's daughter). The foreshore is full of beautiful shady trees to picnic under. And of course this is a child's paradise!! Janine couldn't resist climbing one :o) Leave a Comment

Of course we had to go in for a dip!! The water is very calm and nice and easy to swim in. I swam Jesse on my back out to the pontoon. Gee I'm unfit haha....got about a metre from the steps and I felt like I was sinking under Jesse's weight. Of course it may have had a little to do with all the food and drink I had too :o) But it was definately fun jumping and diving off the pontoon!! Leave a Comment

The beach in Rockingham is very long and what better way to see it all than to jump on one of these little trains. We didn't bother because we were too busy talking, eating and drinking lol, but the people who were riding on it looked like they were having fun. Leave a Comment
