ROTTY
Most of the visitors that come over to Rottnest Island come over from Fremantle and Perth for the pristine beaches and loverly clear aqua blue waters. The sun here in summertime is unforgiving and can be extremely hot. Be aware of the sun here in Australia as it is more severe.
Obviously most people are here for the beaches there is little shade as most bush around the beaches is only "scrub" with little in the way of trees and shade. Always make sure that you have a really good covering of strong sunscreen on of at least 30+. Whenever you come from the water always re-apply the sunscreen even if it is a waterproof type as they wash off.

Many visitors here apart from swimming and sunbaking choose to snorkel as the waters in the reef areas are so wonderfully clear..Always wear a T shirt or some form of covering on your back as so many overlook this and suffer extremely bad sunburn. This happened to my daughter while snorkelling in Sydney ,also the backs of her legs were badly burnt also..(ouch). Even being in the water there is always the reflection off the water as well to contend with!
here are a few tips
. Make sure that you have and use plenty of a strong Sunscreen.
Take a hat and sunglasses .
A good idea is a strong insect repellant also.
Make sure that you have plenty of fresh bottled water with you.
Spare shirt if you decide to go snorkelling!!. so Cover up!!

ROTTNEST ISLAND
Rottnest Island is a great days getaway from the city Of Perth or Fremantle...The ferry rides to the Island are wonderful. The Island is so unique without traffic with the only traffic being emergency vehicles and local busses..Busses were the way that I got around some of the Island , some I also walked..One great thing here are the pristine waters and the lovely clean sandy beaches. I was really taken by the clearness of the aqua blue waters that attract many swimmers and snorkellers...The beaches here are extremely popular with daytrippers, holiday makers and locals alike. The beauty of it all here though is not without its dangers. Recent times has seen shark attacks here which by the locals knowledge is rather rare. but with the changing temperatures comes differences in marine behaviour. Take care when swimming here.

Avoid crunch times for accommodation on Rotto
CatherineReichardt profile photo
CatherineReichardt 1664 reviews

Family holidays on Rotto are a Perth institution, but bear in mind that the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) accommodation has a maximum capacity of less than 3,000 beds: if you consider that the island gets half a million tourists per year, it's not hard to see why RIA accomodation is in great demand, particularly over peak periods such as Christmas, Easter and 'schoolies'.

Many families book the same week year in, year out, making their reservation for the following year as soon as they return. For this reason, accommodation on the island is at a particular premium over the school holidays, so make sure that you take this into account if you're planning a visit and would like to stay overnight. Follow this link for more information on school terms in Western Australia, follow the link below.

Similarly, the time of year that I would recommend that you give Rotto a wide berth is the 'schoolies' (more formally known as 'Leavers' Week') in November, when all the school leavers who have just completed their final exams decamp to Rotto as a rite of passage to celebrate the end of their school career and the start of their adult lives - avoid at all costs! Follow this link for a webiste giving the dates of schoolies in WA and other Australian states: http://accommodation.schoolies.org.au/when-is-schoolies-week.htm

Quokka

All flora and fauna on the island are protected. Please DO NOT collect any natural materials, including shells.

Human food is harmful to wildlife, fish, birds and quokkas included. Your seemingly act of kindness may cause them to become ill or die.

Snakes

What we believe was a dugite

There are two species of snakes on Rottnest Island. The first being the Southern Blind snake. They are a non-venomous snake, but will bite if provoked like any creature.

The second snake, the Dugite, is a venomous snake, and is part of the Brown Snake family. This snakes bite can be deadly, especially to young children or elders.

Again these snakes will only bite if they feel threatened. Be careful when walking through the bushes throughout Rottnest. Watch your step and if you do come across one of these 2 snakes, just respect there space.

Quokkas and all birds must NOT be fed. This is because human food is harmful to them. A little water in the palm of your hand on a hot day although is ok.

Wearing a helmet while riding is compulsory and if caught without, the police can issue an on the spot fine. Also if you are riding at night, you will need a light on your bike.

Rottnest - A great day out in Perth!!

Rottnest Island (Rotto), is a fabulous place to visit on your holiday in Perth. You can get there by ferry from Fremantle (Freo) or from Hillary's Boat Harbour, about 20 minutes north of Perth.
