Perth is the biggest City in the West of Australia. With its skyscrapers it has a very modern skyline.

-Cohunu Koala - 35 Minutes drive from the Center. One of the few Places to see Koalas on the West Coast.
    - Rottnest Island -This Island in front of Perth makes a great day trip. Take the ferry and cycle around the island ?or take the bus. See some Quokkas and wonderful beaches.

    NORTH:
    - Cottosloe -one of the first beaches you reach while travelling north up the coast. Perth?s City Beach.

  • Rottnest Island - Australia
    Rottnest Island
    by Myndo
Rottnest is the Island right in front of Perth.
There are different Ferries that can take you there - just check the prices out at the harbour.

Rottnest Island itself isn?t very big. There are two possibilities to get around (no cars on the island).
One is the bus (around 5.50 AUS), where you can get out and in at different stops. The bus drives every full hour.

The other possibility is by bike.
Since the island is quite flat, the road good and you can stop and drive on whenever and wherever you want, I think it is the nicer option.

Also you can really enjoy the views and have a look at the beaches and wonderful spots you come along.
The drive around the island (just one main road) is about 15 km, but you can extend it at the west end (out a one-way road 4 km and back) and at a little loop in the south (1.5km).

Any way it isn't too much stress to drive around the island in that one day and enjoy all the viewpoints and have something to eat at a beach and have a good look at the Quokkas (those rat-like big animals the island has it's name from), they are actually quite cute.

Back on the ferry at 4.45 pm, and back in Perth at around 7 p.m.

Kalbarri seems to be only a small town in western Australia, but only two days there taught me something different.
There's so many interseting things to do and see around here.

It starts, when you are driving up north not on the "big" highway No 1 but from North Gregory up the coast.

    - Theres a lake that is all pink.
    - There are the wild coast line, with natural bridges and cliffs and good viewpoints where you can watch dolphins and whales
    - There is a parrot-farm (Rainbow jungle)
    - There is Pelikan-feeding at the beach
    - Theres the Kalbarri National Park with the Murchison River
    etc .....

Only draw back here are the many (many!) flies you find in the park. Try to go protected: repellent, flynet...

  • Uluru - Australia
    Uluru
    by Myndo
Ayers Rock or Uluru (the Aboriginal name, means: shady place) is the biggest Monolith on earth and Australias most known Tourist Attraction. It is about 4.5 km long, 2.5 km thick and 348.7 m high.

The Rock has a lot of faces, its red changes from almost yellow to violett with the light of the sun.

There are several walk ways at and around Uluru.
The Base Walk (once around) is 9.4 km and takes 3-4 hours.
It offers a lot of interesting sights of the changing surface.

You can also climb the Rock, there is a way up the rim, secured with a chain. It is not safe to climb it when its wet, and it is closed when its raining.
The record for going up is at 14 minutes and 20 seconds, the record for going down at about 6 seconds (one unfortunate tourist).
The Aboriginals do not encourage you to climb the rock (Its the most sacred place for them, it would be like climbing the Notre Dame or Haga Sophia), but they do not forbid it, either.

Sunset and Sunrise are the best times to make pictures of the Uluru, the changing light gives him a new color every few minutes.
Unfortunately you will never be alone watching this. There are hundreds of other tourists around then.

The Olgas are located 42 km east of the Ayers Rock. Uluru (Ayers Rock) can be seen from there.
They consist of 27 round sand stone Domes.
The biggest one, Mount Olga is 546 m high, wich is 200 m higher than Uluru.
The Aboriginal name for them is Kata Tjuta, meaning "many heads".

You can walk around and through them and soak in the special atmosphere. Just make sure to take enough water with you.

There are two major walking trails, namely The Valley of the Winds and The Olga Gorge. The former takes about three hours and leads you to several deep gorges. The latter leads up to the beautiful Olga Gorge and to its deadened cliff face and a rock pool.

    Dolphin at Monkey Mia
    by Myndo
Located on the road out to Monkey Mia lies Hamlin Pool.
Here you can find the oldest Lifeform on earth - and still living.
They are the Stromatolites, stone-like structures built by living Bacteria. They resemble Corallae.

Its one of the two places in the world where they still exist, and they seem to be doing fine, since they do not have so many problems with the snails here - the water is too salty because it is very flat.

The Stromatolites can be viewed best when its low tide.

Monkey Mia is located on the far end of a half island out into the sea.
You have to drive back the same way. As I remember that will be about 150km one way....

Ok, I may was a little disappointed because I wanted to get close to the Dolphins ... which they won't let you.

They have feedings there (take care: only until 1 pm), but only a few chosen ones are allowed to hand the fish over. No touching or swimming allowed.
The reason for this is, for one that they want to protect these animals of our bacteria and sicknesses and for two, that some ***holes did put their cigarettes in the breathing holes of the Dolphins. Now the rangers will not let the people get close anymore.

The Visitor Centre is interesting and well done. Quite new, too. You can also make a trip with a Catamaran to see the Dungons that also live here.

The name Monkey Mia comes from the Aboriginal word "My-ah" for Home or Hut and "Monkey" was the nickname of the agile indonesian pearl divers that worked here.

    Brisbane from Mt. Cootah

Brisbane would be a town I could live in. Not so super big as Sydney, but more easy to look over. And a nice life-feeling, too. Also there is that green surroundings....

If you are here, you should have a look at this:

-Queen Street Mall -get a feeling for Brisbane and the life here. Shopping, eating, strolling, information and everything right in the Center of the City.

-Southbank is the beach of Brisbane. Located on Brisbane River with lots of Cafes and shops. Take a stroll. It is the remains of the Expo 88.

-Brisbane?s City Hall is located next to King George Square between Adelaide and Ann Streets. Art Museum, and go up the Clock Tower

-Saint Johns Cathedral. 19th century Gothic Cathedral in front of modern skyscrapers -what a contrast.

-Story Bridge is another landmark in Brisbane. It can be walked ? nice views on the town.

-City Cat- Round Ferries on Brisbane River with good views and sights of the city - and practical, too!

-Botanical garden in Brisbane: very nice is the Mangrove walk through real swamps.

-Mt Cootah : a short drive outside of Brisbane offers the best view over the town and surroundings. Cafe with view, nice walks around the hill. The new Botanical gardens are also located here.

-Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Your chance in Brisbane to see the local wildlife and feed it, too.

-Australian Woolshed. Nice little lambs and how to shave the wool off.

-Steve Irwins Australian Zoo. The guy is known from TV shows worldwide. Most know him under the name Crokodile hunter he is kinda overhyped, but not unnice. His own Zoo, where he also lives, is located close to Brisbane.

Natural Bridge spans the mountain-fed waters of Cave Creek. There lyes a waterfall which plunges into a gaping hole disappearing into the depths of a cavern. From the pool below the bridge emerges a sparkling stream, which flows into the Nerang River and down the Numinbah valley.

One early morning we pack a picnic and hitchhike all the way there.

We stroll down the the spiralling walkways and I find a spot to lay on the rocks and soak in the warmth.

I find myself falling in and out of sleep to the sound of children laughing and splashing about in the water yelling ' Mummy its really cold in here!'. This would have to be one of my favourite places on earth.

We collect Ocre in the waterways and paint each others faces and laugh at how ridiculous we look. 'Its all about getting in touch with our tribal roots', Emrynn would say.

Always, wherever i go i have a sketch pad and i draw Emrynn bathing in the sun. He looks so at peace and happy. I could sit here forever just admiring his beauty and simplicity. I smile contently.

We hide in the forest and stay there the night under the stars. We lay there in solitary bliss and watch the sun and moon give way to each other as the birds give out their final goodnight songs

We are high on the mountain and have found a spectacular view. I wake early in Emrynns embrace and sneak away to do the morning to spend some alone time.

Ah, the earth is coming to life. You can almost feel her move and swell under your feet. The sky becomes lighter and visible, the stars close their eyes and the moon waves me off. The birds and morning animals merge from the stillness to join in the welcoming and dawning of this wonderous morning.

I welcome her back and do yoga on the soft earth. I feel centred and sit for some time observing the birth of the new day!

Emrynn is stiring when i come back and we make our way down and swim again while no one is around and i lay under the waterfall letting the stream pour over my face!

Refreshed and somewhat cold, we make our way back home.....

Atherton-Tablelands, green soft flowing hills and many waterfalls.

The Landscape feels very familiar to me, like the Jura in Switzerland.
But the climate is a lot warmer, so the forests around here are more like Rainforests.

    To see:
    - Barron Falls (very big, expressive especially in the wet time)
    - Milaa Milla Falls (like on a tropical island-kitchy)
    - Dinner Falls (the typical Waterfall)
    - more: Zillie Falls, Ellinja Falls ..
    - Mt Hypipamee Crater: a hole in the stone with a lake on the ground - the way to it goes through a forest, beware of the leeches here!

    by Myndo
Kangaroo Island is a "must see" if you are around Adelaide.
It is Autralias 3rd biggest island and offers many attractions (see below).

It's a strenous one-day trip or you can also stay on the island overnight. Its easier if you book one of the many tours.

Bus (1h 45 minutes) and Ferry (45 minutes) bring you to the island from Adelaide. Even that drive is worth it, since the surroundings from Adelaide are quite picturesque.

On Kangoroo Island itself you can see and do this:

Experience the scenery and natural beauty of the Island.
    Visit the Eucalyptus Distillery
Watch the sea lion colony of Seal Bay.
Watch Kangoroos, Koalas, Wallabies in Flinders Chase National Park.
Take pictures of the Remarkable Rocks, Cape du Couedic
    and Admirals Arch

Exmouth itself is quite unspectacular, but a good starting point to the Cape Range National Park (on land) and the Ningaloo Marine Park (in the sea).

There are different things you can do here, most popular is the trip into the Park (dead end, though, you come back the same way.).
The roads are good here, even in the Park by the way.

Here you can see all the Kangaroos and Emus you wish, go snorkeling and swimming, enjoy the wide empty beaches, go for a walk, etc.

Coral Bay is a small town, located south of Exmouth. An excellent place to spend a few quiet days and relax.

It has a Reef very close to the beach (hence the name), actually it starts right 5m from the beach. And it is really beautiful, like swimming in a zoo aquarium.

You can rent some wetsuits there, which is good, when the water isnīt that warm yet and it is easier to swim, too. 4 hours are only 7 AUS.
Also ask from where the current comes, so you can get in and swim with it (not against it).

The only things to be cautious are the glass bottom boats that are also in thet area and that you donīt end up to far from the beach (which is easy, because there are so many things to see in the water that you forget to look up).

There are some tourist bureaus where you can hire snorkeling trips with either Manta-Rays or Whales.
They take you out on a boat to the places where airplanes have seen the Manta Rays.
Then you go off the boat, swimming and snorkeling after the Mantas.
It is a great experience to see them "fly" elegantly through the water.
