Australian Zoo

by iandsmith

Ah, how we loved Steve Irwin. Not since Crocodile Dundee has the land downunder had so much publicity. Wonder what they had in common. Ah, that's right, those things they make handbags out of!We irreverent Smiths call the place "Crikey World" and, when you go there, you'll probably think you're seeing double, quadruple and worse. The reason being that all staff have to wear the uniform khaki shorts and shirt that Steve Irwin made a trademark of his enterprise. These days it's been carried on by his wife and the two children.Lots to see and genuine experiences to have here for all the family. Anything slimy, repulsive, primaeval, deadly is liable to be encountered here but, hey, that's entertainment!Whenever you're there it's hard not to think of the man who made it all possible. Vale, Steve Irwin.Open 9.00 to 4.30 daily except Xmas Day,it's $59 for adults so it is not cheap but good value...

Port Stephens

by iandsmith

The only reason Port Stephens is not one of Australia's top five resorts is simple. It's at the finish of a dead end road.Otherwise its beautiful beaches (pic 2) and spectacular bays (pics 3,4,5) would be packed continually with tourists. Having said that, in the last decade its development has been frantic. New suburbs are springing up along with the shopping centres and light industrial estates. Despite that, it's still one of the most gloriously attractive places in all Australia. The D'Albora Marina in Nelson Bay has put it on the boating map and the stunning Tomaree Headland is unforgettable. It's a watersports fan's delight and a great place for the kids with the lovely sandy beaches inside the bay.Salamander Bay is the main place for shopping though Nelson Bay is the main tourist shopping area.Do you get the impression I like it? So will you.

Storm surf

by iandsmith

If you get lucky while touring you may get a storm. Not so lucky I hear you think! On the contrary, when the weather attacks the ocean and the violent moods show on the surface the sea is a spectacular place and, every time it happens in my home town, there's a queue of cars at the beach because so many people want to see it. I can't blame them, I'm somewhere in the queue myself! These shots were taken around Newcastle Baths and at Merewether, a couple of places where you can not only watch the power of the sea but see human beings try to tame the fury. There are other spots such as Blacksmiths, Nobbys and Stockton where rideable waves can be had also and you might see surfers out; depends on the swell direction and wind direction.

Victorian goldfields

by iandsmith

Here we have towns that once were wealthy and could afford some lovely buildings. The good news is that they have preserved the majority of them and you can see them in all their splendour.A main feature of Australian architecture is wrought iron and the examples in this area are as good as any you'll see anywhere in the world I suspect. There are also some beautiful parks, more so in the larger towns and Bendigo has an amazing Chinese museum. For its part, Ballarat has the famous Sovereign Hill, where you can live your colonial fantasies and pan for gold as well(don't get too excited over that one).If nature is for you then there is also a well stocked Wildlife Park. However, there are many other towns such as Beechworth etc. that have very interesting history and are worthy of your time.My tip is to allow a few days and explore the area.

Mount Tamborine & Lamington National Park

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: March 2010Lamington National Park is located in the green behind the gold, the green and lush area northwest of the Goald Coast. It is a region of green hills and valleys, dense rainforest, cute villages, small farms and vineyards. It is a real contrast to the glitter and consumerism of the Gold Coast!Another plus is that it is not far from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, so a short trip to visit the rainforest is easily done if you are staying there. Moreover, Lamington is the oldest national park in Queensland, founded in 1915, and also UNESCO world heritage ("Gondwana Rainforests of Australia"). I had booked a hiking trip to this park, but it was cancelled because of rain and so I hastily booked another guided tour to see at least a little of the region. This tour mainly visited O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat which was nice enough and quite enjoyable. I...

Fraser Island

by ettiewyn

State: QueenslandI visited in: January 2007 Fraser Island is pretty high on the list of most people who visit Queensland, and I think that is absolutely justified. I did a guided two day trip in January 2007 and I loved it very much. It is a very special place with beautiful and mostly untouched nature, rainforest, beach and lakes. And it is the largest sand island in the world, and UNESCO heritage! An icon of the island is Maheno Shipwreck, which you see in the main picture. Other popular things to do are to swim in one of the many freshwater lakes, which is simply wonderful (and that is what I say, as a person who absolutely does not like swimming!), letting yourself float in Eli Creek, climb Indian Head or have a walk through the rainforest... And there is more of course! The island itself is like a huge wilderness. There are no real roads, only some tracks through the rainforest. The...

Adelaide

by ettiewyn

State: South AustraliaI visited in: December 2009, January 2010Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and a perfect gateway to explore that beautiful state. Many tourists don't spend so much time in Adelaide and say that the city itself is quite boring. Ok, it does not have the spectacular atmosphere and sights such as Sydney or Melbourne, but it is a very pretty city with some interesting sights to see, so if you have the time to spare, it is nice to spend some time in Adelaide and just relax a little! It is a very green and well-planned city that was laid out by William Light. There is an abundance of green parks and lawns, and also many beautiful historical buildings. The two main museums, the Migration Museum and the South Australian Museum, are well worth a visit. It is very nice to have a walk along the Torrens River, or along North Terrace where you can see some of Adelaide's...

A PLACE FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS AND REV HEADS

by DennyP

MOTOR SPORT AND SHOWS Like many things we have in common with many visitors to Australia are cars.!!. Yes!!"Automobiles" Vintage models, Collectors Nostalgia models, Racing V8's, Dragsters, Formula One , Custom Cars , Hot rods or just wonderful regular show cars. The enjoyment of a day at a car show or racing car meet is an individual exercise in admired colourful mobile metal. Australians, like our American mates have a love affair with the motor car and that it apparent when you see the many and varied car shows and races that are held all over Australia in the various States every year. I live in the state of New South Wales and there are always many auto events in the state to keep me happy. Whenever I travel I always like to check out the local automotive museums that are in so many different paces.. Like"train buffs" there are "car buffs" and (I am one ) I always like to see...

ENJOY OUR WONDERFUL AND UNIQUE NATIONAL PARKS

by DennyP

NATIONAL PARKS When visiting Australia and whatever state you may be in make sure you get to see the local National parks. Some of the most amazing sights in the country are located within a miriad of National Parks. You will find though that most are out of the way but will have some form of access whether it be a tour of some type or accessed even in your own vehicle. All Information on National Parks can be accessed by contacting the local National Parks and Wildlife Service In the Appropriate State or Territory. These I have found to be exceedingly helpful organisations with all sorts of maps and guides for the adventuresome bush walkers and the highly experienced Hikers that have the neccesary equipment. My experiences in many of our prominent National Parks has been a very positive one. Most of the Do's and Dont's are common sense and respect for the environment. To be seen in the...
