One of the Worlds Natural Wonders...

by tylercdurden2004

Can and must be seen while in Australia. This is the Great Barrier Reef, the largest natural feature on teh earth and can be seen from outer space. It is around 2300km long and depending where you see it it can be close to the mainland or up to 2 hours by boat away. It is a facinating place and very beautiful. You have to get into the water here and either snorkel or dive the reef to see the fish and coral species. I chose snorkelling because I did not have my diving certification but I still got to see lots and I can dive fairly deep so I could see some of teh deeper species. I even got to pet the notoriaously friendly Maori Wrasse. This is a fish about 50 kgs or so and is massive. But if you put your arm out to them they will roll over like a dog almost and drift towards you and you can touch them. A few things about the reef that you will be told when you get there. First it is...

Beware of the Dingos...

by tylercdurden2004

Well not really and certainly dont let them put you off of touring around Fraser Island in a 4x4. This is one of the funnest adventures I have been on, even though it was over crowded with tourists. Basically you either self-hire (form your own group and all chip in to cover costs) or go through a travel dealer (which sets you up with a hostel that runs the tours) and rent a 4x4 for 3 days. You can drive around the island camping pretty much where ever you please. There are some guidelines (where you can drive, behavior etc) that will be outlined prior to heading off and you will be given all neccessary information so theres not really much to do. The only difference between self-hire and tour package is the self-hire you must buy all your own food and organize your own group proir to heading off. I did th etour package and in hind sight probably should have tried the self hire. the food...

And get the #@&$ outta Sydney! This is Barrington Tops National Park a world heritage listed site. This place is massive so leave yourself lots of time to explore the different areas. you will need a car to get around as everything is spread out here and local transit may not get you where you want to go.

The Outback

by PamRay

We travelled around Australia in 1996, we took 6 months and did 26,500kms and that was basically just around the coastline. I think the most impressive for me was Karijini National Park in Central Western Australia, if you want to see the outback this is the place to see. There are various gorges with stunning landscapes, waterholes with waterfalls, and when we were there hardly any other people around. At night sitting outside our caravan it is pitch black and it seems like you can just about reach out and touch the stars, a truly magical place. It is situated near Tom Price where they have a huge Iron Ore mine definately worth a tour.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...........actually

by iandsmith

......it's a fox. Then again, although they're called flying foxes they are rather obviously related to bats and are often called fruit bats because that's one of the things they eat. If you're thinking you might be lucky to see one, the chances are they're all around you. Even on the streets of cities like Sydney (especially Manly). If you are wandering past a tree at night and hear screeching noises and heavy fluttering, don't panic, it's most likely just a grey-headed flying fox. They mainly diet on nectar and pollen from eucalypts, banksias and melaleucas but, where their habitat has been disturbed (generally by urban development), you may find them dining on fruit from your backyard.Weighing in at up to a kilogram and with a wing span of up to a metre they have a flight speed of 25km per hour and range up to 30 kilometres from their base using their night vision and sense of...

The Maritime Museum - Darling Harbour

by Tourtech

For those of you navy buff's especially those from Canada. Australia has an Oberon Class Diesel Electric sub on display in Sydney. Built in the 60's, this class of sub was operated by the British, Canadian and Australian Navies. You can tour the inside of this sub, and get a great idea of what it is like to work on one. FYI: Canada only retired thiers in 2002 - before buying the current ones. The Canadian Oberon Class Subs are still considered classified, so you cannot get near them. this is funny in contrast to the Australians who have two Oberon Class subs as museum displays.

Through the coloured glass, just looking

by iandsmith

If there's one thing I think is underutilized in modern architecture, it's stained glass. I love the way colours shine as the sun's rays highlight the rich tapestry of hues intertwined on a window. Thus it gives me pleasure to feature this relatively modern example (1992) of the art in Hanna's Arcade in the East Mall of Armidale.Inside the arcade are up-market clothing stores, pharmaceuticals and a restaurant with nice ambience.

Twelve Apostles & Coast Road

by zuhur

By car or bus, traveling southwest from Melbourne, these giant rocks, called the Twelve Apostles, are along the coastal highway. I booked a tour to go out here, most of the other tourists were Japanese or Korean & the highlight were these immense limestone shapes. One disembarks at the top of cliff-walks to take pictures of them. The trip was timed so that we hit the last of these stops around sunset - so the light was fantastic. We stopped on the way at a seaside village where people have small summer places and had tea or coffee and a local biscuit. It's quite a long trip but worth it, as you travel through various summer towns and eucalyptus forests, then grazing country with rolling hills.

Museums

by zuhur

I went to the Museum of Natural History, then the Museum of Contemporary Art and finally, the Immigration Museum in Melbourne - the first took up a whole afternoon, and the other two, I managed along with a long walking tour out of my guidebook in an afternoon (also heard a boys choir in the Anglican church downtown at vespers). The Museum of Natural History had a special exhibit on famous bandits and criminals of the world - that was just terrific! In its permanent collection was a segment on the human body - and a wonderful area on Australia, aboriginal art and history, and of course, dinosaurs,e tc. The Museum of Contemporary Art (I may not have the title correctly) was further downtown & is a striking building with a wonderful permanent collection of Australian arts from the 19th century on - as well as Impressionists, up to Abstract. The upper floors were devoted to a special...

Melbourne Zoo

by zuhur

For animal lovers, and travelers with children, this is a great zoo! I was staying not too far from the University of Melbourne so that's a short cab ride, and then ask someone to call you a cab for return. The zoo is divided into different areas and regions, and the Austalia ecozone is full of all those unique animals that tourists want to see -- different types of kangaroos, including one who lives in a tree house, very large wombats sleeping in their cave habitats, koalas, and a small area that contains the extremely tiny fairy penguins. I got a better look at these little creatures here than I did at their beach landing point. The Asia eco-segment of this zoo is really spectacular -- there is a sort of Asian villagewith all sorts of elephant related knck-knacks and buildings and the wonderful pachyderms, but also some interesting shrines. And the giraffe area is also spectacular.
