The Maritime Museum - Darling Harbour

by Tourtech

For those of you navy buff's especially those from Canada. Australia has an Oberon Class Diesel Electric sub on display in Sydney. Built in the 60's, this class of sub was operated by the British, Canadian and Australian Navies. You can tour the inside of this sub, and get a great idea of what it is like to work on one. FYI: Canada only retired thiers in 2002 - before buying the current ones. The Canadian Oberon Class Subs are still considered classified, so you cannot get near them. this is funny in contrast to the Australians who have two Oberon Class subs as museum displays.

Through the coloured glass, just looking

by iandsmith

If there's one thing I think is underutilized in modern architecture, it's stained glass. I love the way colours shine as the sun's rays highlight the rich tapestry of hues intertwined on a window. Thus it gives me pleasure to feature this relatively modern example (1992) of the art in Hanna's Arcade in the East Mall of Armidale.Inside the arcade are up-market clothing stores, pharmaceuticals and a restaurant with nice ambience.

Twelve Apostles & Coast Road

by zuhur

By car or bus, traveling southwest from Melbourne, these giant rocks, called the Twelve Apostles, are along the coastal highway. I booked a tour to go out here, most of the other tourists were Japanese or Korean & the highlight were these immense limestone shapes. One disembarks at the top of cliff-walks to take pictures of them. The trip was timed so that we hit the last of these stops around sunset - so the light was fantastic. We stopped on the way at a seaside village where people have small summer places and had tea or coffee and a local biscuit. It's quite a long trip but worth it, as you travel through various summer towns and eucalyptus forests, then grazing country with rolling hills.

Museums

by zuhur

I went to the Museum of Natural History, then the Museum of Contemporary Art and finally, the Immigration Museum in Melbourne - the first took up a whole afternoon, and the other two, I managed along with a long walking tour out of my guidebook in an afternoon (also heard a boys choir in the Anglican church downtown at vespers). The Museum of Natural History had a special exhibit on famous bandits and criminals of the world - that was just terrific! In its permanent collection was a segment on the human body - and a wonderful area on Australia, aboriginal art and history, and of course, dinosaurs,e tc. The Museum of Contemporary Art (I may not have the title correctly) was further downtown & is a striking building with a wonderful permanent collection of Australian arts from the 19th century on - as well as Impressionists, up to Abstract. The upper floors were devoted to a special...

Melbourne Zoo

by zuhur

For animal lovers, and travelers with children, this is a great zoo! I was staying not too far from the University of Melbourne so that's a short cab ride, and then ask someone to call you a cab for return. The zoo is divided into different areas and regions, and the Austalia ecozone is full of all those unique animals that tourists want to see -- different types of kangaroos, including one who lives in a tree house, very large wombats sleeping in their cave habitats, koalas, and a small area that contains the extremely tiny fairy penguins. I got a better look at these little creatures here than I did at their beach landing point. The Asia eco-segment of this zoo is really spectacular -- there is a sort of Asian villagewith all sorts of elephant related knck-knacks and buildings and the wonderful pachyderms, but also some interesting shrines. And the giraffe area is also spectacular.

The Blue Mountains

by Tayto

If you are in Sydney for a few days there is a 1 day trip to the blue mountains north of Sydney that is well worth doing. Its an early start but its a great day out. You travel by coach to the Blue Mountains stopping at an animal reserve on the way where you get up close and personal with Australian's native animals including Kola, Wallabies....Bats ! The blue mountains are spectacular and you get a chance to ride a cable car over one of the gorges above the forest canopy and it is just spectacular...not for those who don't like heights. On the way back to Sydney there are two stops one to a small vilage with an old fashioned candy shop that's like a step back in time. Also you stop at the Olympic Village and Stadium which is interesting before boarding a boat for a trip into Sydney harbour where you travel past the opera house and under Sydney's famous bridge for a different view of the...

Visit Wildworld

by peeley

We found this by accident coming back to Cairns from a drive up to Port douglas. It is in fact on the main road between the 2 towns. It is a small zoo with crocodiles, snakes, kangaroos, wallabies performing parrots etc. Basically all of Australias native animals, some of which you wouldn't like to bump into in the wild !!You can feed the kangaroos and wallabies by hand ( or rather they take the food from you ! )i'm glad we found this place and would recommend it if you have a spare half day or so.

Visit The Reef

by peeley

We went out to Green Island on the Inner Reef. Easy to get to on a small ferry from Cairns Harbour. Cheap as wellThere is a small zoo, museum, cafe and as much beach as you want for your self on the island. We spent a whole day there

white water rafting

by peeley

not sure why we did this ( my wife can't swim ! ). But we did, survived and lived to tell the tale. Worth every single Dollar. It was a half day trip starting early morning with a trip by road ( obviously ) up to a dam upstream of the Tulley River. The rafts are put into the gentle running river but SOMEONE opened the bloody dam !You then have to try and avoid getting killed otherwise you miss the bar -be- cue dinner/lunch at the bottom of the rapids !SUPERB !
