Whale Watching in Perth

by mad4travel

You can go Whale watching from Hillarys Harbour just outside Perth.Trips are about 40 mins each way for about an hours worth of watching that seems like 10 mins (time just flies by)On the day we did it is was a bit rough and the boat was being thrown about and people were being sick! However that was all forgotten when we got to the whales and followed 3 humpback whales diving and feeding for an hour. Its really difficult getting a descent shot of them , so this tail was the best I could muster! The season runs from September to November, the trip is at 12.30 daily. When you return there are some nice shops and cafes to browse around and next door is the AQWA aquarium which is pretty good.

Pinnacles desert, Perth

by mad4travel

You can do a day coach trip from Perth to the Nambung national park to see the Pinnacles desert or its a 4 hour drive. We did a coach trip, which was just as well as it was a very long day and with the heat made it very tiring. Also, some of the roads we went along were not paved so would have been fun in a bog standard hire car.On the way we visited a Koala sanctuary, ok, but not as good as the Lone Pine sanctuary in Brisbane. You can also see wild Kangeroos and Emus on the way if you look hard enough! We also went to some huge sand dunes at Lancelin (see separate tip) and a quick stop on a gorgeous beach at Hangover bay.The Pinnacles were really interesting. Early explorers saw them from the sea and thought they were a city. I thought they looked more like people that had been turned to stone and who moved when you were not looking (ok, maybe the heat and the drugs were kicking in...

Lakes Entrance

by martin_nl

The weather had finally improved when we got to the small town of Lakes Entrances. Lakes Entrance is part of Gippslands Lakes District, which is the largest inland waterway system in Australia. From Lakes Entrance you can walk to 90 mile beach a beautiful strech of coastline with sand dunes, clear water and a wide beach. When you're here driving a car make sure to drive up to Jemmies Point Lookout for some great views over the lakes and the Entrance.

Darwin

by martin_nl

After having worked for a long time in Echuca and seeing my parents again on the Great Ocean Road it was time to move back onto the road again. Well more the plane since I flew from Melbourne to Darwin. I left quite late in the evening and got there around midnight. It was the end of the rainy season, so it was still very very humid at that time and about 30 degrees, yes, even at midnight! Quite a difference compared to Melbourne and Echuca where it was wintertime, where the nights were literary freezing cold.Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory and completety at the top of Australia. It is a very nice city with a great climate during the dry season. Things to do while you're in Darwin are to visit the Botanical Gardens, walk around the Bicentennial Park to take in the views of the bay. Darwin was completely destroyed a couple of times in its history, by war and also because...

Mary River NP

by martin_nl

Get ready for a photo safari on your trip to Mary River National Park. You will see loads of wildlife here like saltwater crocodiles, jabiru's, loads of birds, cows, wallabies, water lillies and loads more to keep you intrested. We went here on our second day of a Kakadu trip with Adventure Tours and this NP was definitely another highlight! We boarded a small sort of boat, and we sailed all through the wet lands. Our guide knew lots about the wetlands and told us lots of little details. Then again that's what guides usually do don't they?

Tip Photo
Litchfield NP

by martin_nl

A short drive from Darwin will take you the Litchfield National Park. This park is excellent if you don't have a 4WD car, since the roads to the NP are all tarmac roads. Litchfield is a great National Park not only because of it's proximity to Darwin but also because there is lots to see and do on a relatively small area. If you love to swim this is your National Park. Visit Buley Rockhole, Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and loads of other places. You can also visit huge termite mounds and a whole 'graveyard' of termite mounds. On the way back to Darwin you will pass the didgeridoo hut, make sure to stop here and see aboriginal artists decorating didges. Prices here are alright but the quality is very good. I also bought my own didgeridoo here!

Tip Photo
Katherine Gorge/Nitmiluk NP

by martin_nl

Katherine Gorge NP or as the aborinies call it Nitmiluk NP is a must see. The gorge here is lots of kilometres long. It is actually not one gorge but 13 linked together. It is seperated by rocks and r. The gorge is carved out by the Katherine River which begins all the way in Arnhem Land, east of Kakadu Nation Park. During the dry season the gorge is perfect for swimming and canoeing, mind the freshwater crocs though when they're nesting. However in the wet season the waters can become very dangerous. The water level rises tremendously and can become a raging torrent. You can rent a canoe at Nitmiluk Tours for just a few hours or a couple of days, since the longest route takes about three days. Canoeing is quite hard work, since you have to cross rocks and rapids on land, so you have to lift the canoe yourself. It is quite an experience though, one you should definitely undergo. If you...

Cuddle a Koala in Brisbane

by mad4travel

Overdose on cuteness with a trip to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane. Its in the suburbs and takes about 45 mins to get to by bus. They have a wide variety of native australian animals but the best thing of all are the Koalas. There are talks by park rangers and you can even cuddle a koala and have your photo taken -ahhh.In the shop you'll also see pics of famous celebs cuddling a Koala including Marylin Manson (minus make up) - so much for the hard man image! They have boys and girls enclosures and a nursery for babies (see photo)They also have a big kangeroo enclosure where you can feed them - very cute! You can get bus number 430 from Platform ‘B3’ from underneath the Myer Centre in the Queen Street Mall or Bus number 445 leaves from Stop number 45 outside City Hall on Adelaide Street.Adult fares are $2.80

Tip Photo
Yanchep Ntl Park

by Myndo

Yanchep is a Park north of Perth, you can get there in about 45 minutes driving. It is a very nice oportunity to see some of the local wildlife as well as a beautiful surrounding. It is really green there, a place to come back to yourself. There are some bush walks in the park.A very nice one is the walk around the Lake (Loch Mc Ness - were there scottish persons here?)The Crystal Cave with its wonderful view on stalaktites and stalagmites and its great accoustics can also be rent for weddings and such .... with light and music this is a real romantic place.Meals and Drinks you can have at Yanchep Inn and Chawn Mia Tea Rooms.Activities like posing with a Koala, listening to the Aboriginal people or guided tours through the Cave from 8 am to 5 pm.

Tip Photo
The Red Centre: Alice Springs and surroundings

by Myndo

Alice Springs itself is a nice little town, but not really a "must see".But it is the biggest Town in the Middle of Australia and it is THE starting point for any trip to :the Ayers Rock (say: Uluru), the Olgas, (Kata Tjuna)the Kings Creek Canyon, the Glen Helen Gorge,Orniston Gorge,Wallace Rockhole,Goss BluffEllery CreekFinke RiverPalm ValleyStandley ChasmOchre Pitts....So Australias Middle is not really the middle of Nowhere.... and the big little town a must. The picture is taken on Anzak Hill.On the picture you can see the hills in the background: Its the MacDonnel Ranges and the doorway they are building is the Heavytree Gap. Here the Todd River comes through - and the Road: Stuart Highway. In times with much water the road is flooded regularly.
