Hate to repeat myself, but you have paid hundred or thousands of dollars to come and dive at the Great Barrier Reef. Do not be a fool and do it the right way. The one-day dive trips will take you to popular reefs in the inner Great Barrier Reef. These are usually offered on boats that carry over 100 people snorkeling, diving, or just relaxing on board. You won’t get to see much and the coral will be damaged more so then other locations. For serious divers I suggest you take the time and spend the money by going at the many multiple day trips offered from Bundaberg or Townsville. Cairns and Port Douglas also offer trips, but these are more popular. Try to book a trip that takes you further away from the crowds if you dive from Cairns and Port Douglas. Try the Holmes Reef about 240 km from the Australian Mainland if you find yourself at Cairns. As mentioned earlier, try to avoid the multi-day packages from Arlie Beach.

If you have only one day to dive at the Great Barrier Reef then try to do so at Lady Musgrave Island, which is at the Southern Great Barrier Reef (boats of Bundaberg or Town of 1770).

So you paid hundred or thousands of dollars to come and dive at the Great Barrier Reef. Do not be a fool and do it the right way. Many of the operators near islands such as the Magnetic Island and Whitsunday Islands (from Arlie Beach) will lure you to their shop. What they won’t tell you is that the visibility near the islands are quite bad compare then out in the outer reef. Some will even promises you dives in the Outer reef. However, when going on their trips they’ll turn out using any excuse to keep you around the islands. They’ll blame the wind, the currents, or their boat. It is far better to dive off Townsville, Bundaberg, or even Cairns. So make sure you skip the Whitsunday Islands and Magnetic Islands; or at the very least leave them until last.

    School holidays

  • If you have the option, you might care to time your visit so that it does not coincide with school holidays. At these times, beaches and the roads to them can be busier; accommodation is more likely to be fully booked and possibly more expensive; and road policing penalties are higher. In other words, there is less hassle and expense if you can visit outside school holidays.

To complicate the issue, every State has its own education system with similar but often differing timing of holidays. Thankfully, the information on school terms and holidays is given in the following website.

    Climbing the Harbour Bridge in
    Sydney

I can believe that climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge must be an unforgettable experience.

But I believe that the fee they are asking is too much. Someone wants to get rich very quickly.

They asked 185 AUS dollars that is about 110 euros.

Even flying with a helicopter over some mayor landmarks is cheaper (like the Grand canyon in the US).

And for that money you even have to climb yourself. And you are not allowed to take your own camera, so can not make your own pictures while climbing or at the top, Oh no because then you would not buy the overpriced pictures they are making . . .

Just walk over the bridge towards the other side to have some splendid views on the Sydney Opera house and the Skyline.

Sit on a terrace, and enjoy the local beers (Victoria bitter, Coopers Pale Ale, Cascade, XXXX Gold,. . . . )

DO not get lured into doing a resort dive. These dives are quite expensive and will only allow you to go 5 meters below water. You can often see more snorkeling then diving anyway, so why spend the extra money? Save it and do a full course the next time you have some free time. On the other hand, if you get one for free with your Whitsunday Is sailing trip then go for it! It is a common practice to give you a free resort dive on those kinds of tours.

A koala is a marsupial with a pouch - it is not a "koala bear" although it is cute and cuddly like a little fluffy teddy bear.

We do not have kangaroos in our back yards or kangaroos jumping down our main streets - most kangaroos live in the national parks or in the bush. Occasionally a kangaroo will stumble into a residential area and it will be rounded up and let free in the bush.

Kangaroos are dangerous when you are driving on the roads at night - especially if you are in the bush. Try to avoid driving on bush roads on dusk (as the sun is setting) because this is the time when it is hard to see the road properly and it seems to be the time when most kangaroos are hit by cars on the road.

If you do accidentally hit a kangaroo it can do a lot of damage to your car. They are big, heavy animals. There is not much chance of not hitting a 'roo once it has wandered in to your headlights - they get blinded by the lights. If you can avoid driving on dusk or at night on bush roads you will not meet with many accidents with the Kangaroo.

You always forget that when you hire a car in advance, you have to pay insurance. And that can be a fair ammount of money. But you have to take it to many scarry things while driving around (mammals, trucks etc)!

Mostly at front when you are arranging a car, this is not mentioned. Once you're there they tell you about the insurance, and yes it is a large ammount of money!
So ask directly when negoitiating about the car's price about the insurance!

    The 16m high "Big Pineapple"
    by Paul2001
If I had not gone on that Contiki Tour I probably would have never made to the Big Pineapple located in a small town one hour north of Brisbane. I think that is why I decided to cut out on the tour. I cannot stand this sort of tourist trap. I understand that this is considered to be one of the major attractions in Queensland but I could not understand all the fuss. After all it's just pineapples folks.

If you are really into pineapple worship then go. There a guides that teach you everything that you would want to know about pineapples. They show them from their early days in a nursery and how they grow to be big plants sometimes 120cm high. There is also a "sugarcane train" ride that goes around the 370 acre plantation.
On the grounds there is a decent restaurant and souvenir shops.

    Credit Card traps

  • Here is a tip for locals as well as visitors.
As of 2003, when using credit card, merchants can charge you about 2% extra in order to re-coup the fees the bank charges them.
Ask before using your credit card, especially for a large amount as it's more likely they'll be passing on the extra costs to you.

Ask if there's an extra charge for using your Credit
card and what are the alternatives (probably only cash)

    Shop around at Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kate-Me

  • Australia Page by Kate-Me
  • If you're at the markets, especially Victoria Market for souvenirs, don't just buy the first things you like - chances are those goods will be duplicated - over and over - in other stalls, and the prices could vary surprisingly for exactly the same item.

Take note of where you see things you like, then shop around. You can always come back if you don't find that thing again cheaper.
