Sydney Australia has the most beggers that i have ever seen...if you arent interested in givin them anything just walk away ....australians are pretty nice ignoring them is another way of saying no...they shouldnt follow you or anything....Sydney does have alot of cops and let me remind ya this is the second safest country in the world right behind new zealand.
Here is a tip for locals as well as visitors.
As of 2003, when using credit card, merchants can charge you about 2% extra in order to re-coup the fees the bank charges them.
Ask before using your credit card, especially for a large amount as it's more likely they'll be passing on the extra costs to you.
Unique Suggestions: Ask if there's an extra charge for using your Credit
card and what are the alternatives (probably only cash)
If you're at the markets, especially Victoria Market for souvenirs, don't just buy the first things you like - chances are those goods will be duplicated - over and over - in other stalls, and the prices could vary surprisingly for exactly the same item.
Unique Suggestions: Take note of where you see things you like, then shop around. You can always come back if you don't find that thing again cheaper.
Don’t buy any alcoholic drinks and cigarettes for people under age. The penalties on this offence cost you a lot of money.
Camooweal - this is the first small town that you will come to as you cross the border by road from the Northern Territory into Queensland .. stay away when it even remotely looks like BECOMING the wet season!!! You will be stuck in Camooweal for God only knows how long - and believe me .. there NOTHING to do! Camooweal has one service station, one backpackers and one pub! Asides from this they are very flat and narrow roads which the water flows over very easily and if you have to move over for Roadtrains .. believe me .. you are going to get bogged!
If you go to Surfers Paradise watch out for people trying to sell you property. We got hassled alot by lovely looking ladies asking for us to fill out a survey. They then take you into an office and a high powered sales person comes over. They were doing this several years ago. We would have lost money if we listened to them. Nothing much has changed since. It's a rip off.
King's Cross is Sydney and therefore Australia's dodgiest place and yet there seem to be so many backpackers who stay there. If I was a visitor to Australia I would not want to see the seedy side. Why not stay near the beach, like Manly, Coogee or Bondi?
I live in Sydney. We have a beautiful harbour here but for the average traveller it is not worth paying a lot of money for a cruise. Our ferries are go just about everywhere, are a fraction of the price and have everyday Australians on them!
Dont know if this really classes as a tourist trap, but before we came over to Aus one of the beaches we intended visiting was Bondi Beach (how can you go to Sydney without visiting it we thought) but my Father advised me against it with the children and after watching Australia uncovered on the television over here he was probably right. Best left to the young free and dependentless!!!!
Not only the hostels (some of them are rather filthy and expensive), but some the people. Heaps of people are moving up or down the east caost in busses, stopping everywhere, where it's said to be cool, without really knowing 'where they are. All they do is getting drunk at some party place and bore you to death with telling you how good the party was in (quote) '...I don't remember the name, but it was really cool! ...How far away? I don't know, the bus took us there, but the next day we went to... ahh.. I forgot -but they had a beach, too!'
I hate to say it but Cairns is terribly touristy, and Kuranda has become a bit of a tourist trap too. A few of the islands off the Cairns coasts have turned into resort havens too, which is a bit of a shame.
Don't touch these .
This should be obvious as the sharp end of these does actually look like a trap.
Several years ago a female German tourist did touch one of these at Palm Cove beach and the croc snapped at her.
Like any country there are people more unfornate then us. There will be times when times when you will be asked for money. My advice...use your own judgement! Some people geniuly need money other people ask for money to support there drug and alcohol addictions.
Remember we do have donation services to help these people such as vincent de paul, St patricks foundation so instead you might want to donate money to these services then to the people.
Sega World in Darling Harbor. Its supposed to be an amusment park type place, but the day I went about half the rides were closed and it was really understaffed. The place was just a waste of time and money. When you put a virtual reality mask over ur face you would this layer of dirt and grease on your face after you take it off.
tourist areas attract tourist prices as do most places so ask locals where the best places to shop are,if you eat at a restaurant with an obvious great location as the harbour you will help pay their rent.hang on to your bags and cameras in tourist spots, its not too bad but better to be careful than sorry.ask locals anything they are always willing to help
