Expensive travel in Uluru, australia

by clsaynor

Bus companies will try to 'trap' you into spending huge amounts of money to travel from the resort to Ayres rock/Uluru by booking one of their various tours for anything from $60 australian dollars. If however you hang around the resorts central area a shuttle bus will take you for $8 australian dollars every 10mins one way. They like to catch you on their 'free' service from the airport to your hotel and back, and make you book tours there and then. If you do go on one of their tours, book one that takes you to Kata tjuta/the olgas as the shuttle bus doesn't go here, and it is well worth seeing at sunset (even more so than ayres rock!). The shuttle bus will take you from the resort to any of four points around the base of ayres rock, then pick you up later on. Make sure you don't miss that last one or it's a long walk back to the resort!

Mining museum!

by TracyG

If you are in Tennant Creek, don't bother going to the Old Mining Museum. It is a boring tour and not worth the money - though you do get to go underground which is about the highlight of the tour! You are better off going to e-mail at the local school or transit centre. Spend as long underground as possible! You are better off going to e-mail at the local school or transit centre.

The Big Pineapple in Woombye Queensland

by Paul2001

If I had not gone on that Contiki Tour I probably would have never made to the Big Pineapple located in a small town one hour north of Brisbane. I think that is why I decided to cut out on the tour. I cannot stand this sort of tourist trap. I understand that this is considered to be one of the major attractions in Queensland but I could not understand all the fuss. After all it's just pineapples folks. If you are really into pineapple worship then go. There a guides that teach you everything that you would want to know about pineapples. They show them from their early days in a nursery and how they grow to be big plants sometimes 120cm high. There is also a "sugarcane train" ride that goes around the 370 acre plantation. On the grounds there is a decent restaurant and souvenir shops.

Rialto Towers is only 40 stories high

by Lildeer

Sydney has the Opera House, and Melbourne has the Rialto Towers. Promoted as the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere, it is the master of all it surveys, at a mere 40 stories. Do not pay $10 for an elevator ride to the top. You probably won't be impressed. Instead of looking at the city from above, go explore the city! The Melbourne Cricket Ground has an interesting Olympic Museum, as well as great same-day tickets to the Aussie Rules Football Games played in the venue.

Cairns. Sky Rai to Kuranda

by leahkin52

The sky rail over the 'rain forest'..it was brown. Has some nice views but basically dumps yo in a money spending village for 4 hours. We ended up taking the hiking tour around the village. (on our own) Finished up at the river and hired a kayak. We had a great time, looking for frogs and crocs. They do have a motor boat ride. But if your up for it, paddle out yourself!..It was a lot of fun.

Mystery Craters?

by tini58de

The members of our group were not sure, if Mystery Craters were a highlight or a rip-off.... I liked it, but others definitely didn't!!Mystery craters are located 25 km south west of Bundaberg, Queensland (between Townsville and Brisbane). They were discovered in 1971. The 35 craters are formed in sandstone and are over 25 million years old. There has been no explanation for the origin of the mystery craters.

Canberra - a functional (not tourist) capital

by AKtravelers

It's not like the denizens of Canberra are out to fool you. And it's not like Canberra is a bad, horrible time. It's just that Canberra is not a "must-visit" world capital like most tourists expect. Those of you visiting Canberra expecting Rome, Paris, Washington or even Ottawa will be disappointed. But, if you do go, there are a few good things. Parliament is interesting architecturally and they have a fine war museum fronted by a monument-speckled parade ground. There's a wildlife sanctuary nearby with kangaroos and other typical fauna. The hill above the war museum gives a great vista of the planned and well-manicured city. You'll find warm people and decent food, but you won't find a lot to do. If you MUST go to Canberra, give it at most a day. But there are so many better places to go in Australia don't waste your time here. Keep driving to Adelaide, Melbourne or Sydney, depending...

Harbour Bridge Climb

by beccabug

The Harbour Bridge is that famous coat hanger shaped brigde gracing the Sydney's harbour a stones throw from the Opera House. Well for approx $155-$175 dollars you can walk half of it. But be warned you aren't allowed to take your camera. They will however, take your photo at the top for an additional fee. A cheap equally rewarding alternative is to pay about $5 and take in the views from the southeast pilon. Pilons are the stone pillars supporting the bridge on either side. I've been told by many, that the views from here are just as good. The bonus of the pilon is that you aren't shuffled along. You can stay as long as you like. I'm taking their word for it. I didn't do the bridge climb only the pilon and I wasn't disappointed. On a backpackers budget this is a nice alternative!

Great Barrier Reef?? Oh my!

by beccabug

For avid divers, be warned. The best diving on the Great Barrier Reef is nowear near Cairns, QLD. If you do make it up to Cairns and still haven't dove on the Reef, then try and book a multi-day at trip that takes you far north, or south from Cairns. There are also other options too. I went on a multi-day dive trip that took us 240kms off the australian shore line to Holmes Reef in the Coral Sea. WOW now that's diving!!!!
