Quicksilver Great Barrier Reef diving

by halans

"The caramaran is much larger than we expected. We are a bit dissapointed. This is mass-tourism. At least 200 or more other passengers embark on this, what promisses to be a dreary day, for a 'shallow' GBR experience."Read more on Great Barrier Reef page.

Hamilton island is a money making Island

Evrything and anything costs money, so you end up spending a lot of money in a place that is a man made beach Go diving! There are apartments that you can rent. So as crazy as it may sound take food with you so you can cook your own food there.

Adventure Tours is a RIP OFF

by dln6874

I went on a 6 day tour from Darwin to Alice Springs (3 days) and around Ayers Rock with Adventure Tours. I paid about A$700, and I feel I didn't get my money's worth at all. On the first leg (Darwin to Alice), we sat on the bus most of the time. I think we only had one activity/tour that wasn't free, and the food was mediocre. On the second leg (Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon), there were more activities, but we had to pay for our own park fees so I'm wondering where all of my money went to. (The camp site is pretty basic too.) The food was *** (we got leftovers on the second day), and the guide was a complete ass. He chewed out couple of girls in front of the group for getting lost in Kings Canyon. When I went to go talk to him about it in private, he got defensive and yelled at me!! The hostel, Maranka, owned by the company, is also pretty crappy. The sheets weren't clean, the room...

One Day Rushed Trips to the Great Barrier Reef

by darthmilmo

Hate to repeat myself, but you have paid hundred or thousands of dollars to come and dive at the Great Barrier Reef. Do not be a fool and do it the right way. The one-day dive trips will take you to popular reefs in the inner Great Barrier Reef. These are usually offered on boats that carry over 100 people snorkeling, diving, or just relaxing on board. You won’t get to see much and the coral will be damaged more so then other locations. For serious divers I suggest you take the time and spend the money by going at the many multiple day trips offered from Bundaberg or Townsville. Cairns and Port Douglas also offer trips, but these are more popular. Try to book a trip that takes you further away from the crowds if you dive from Cairns and Port Douglas. Try the Holmes Reef about 240 km from the Australian Mainland if you find yourself at Cairns. As mentioned earlier, try to avoid the...

Resort Dives in general

by darthmilmo

DO not get lured into doing a resort dive. These dives are quite expensive and will only allow you to go 5 meters below water. You can often see more snorkeling then diving anyway, so why spend the extra money? Save it and do a full course the next time you have some free time. On the other hand, if you get one for free with your Whitsunday Is sailing trip then go for it! It is a common practice to give you a free resort dive on those kinds of tours.

Diving at Whitesunday Is: not what you expect

by darthmilmo

So you paid hundred or thousands of dollars to come and dive at the Great Barrier Reef. Do not be a fool and do it the right way. Many of the operators near islands such as the Magnetic Island and Whitsunday Islands (from Arlie Beach) will lure you to their shop. What they won’t tell you is that the visibility near the islands are quite bad compare then out in the outer reef. Some will even promises you dives in the Outer reef. However, when going on their trips they’ll turn out using any excuse to keep you around the islands. They’ll blame the wind, the currents, or their boat. It is far better to dive off Townsville, Bundaberg, or even Cairns. So make sure you skip the Whitsunday Islands and Magnetic Islands; or at the very least leave them until last.

Kuranda Railroad

by Robachu1

Not a very good ride if you want to see the scenery especially if you don't have the "right" window seat. Plus the railroad is very slow. A definite waste of almost 2 hours of your vacation. You are much better off riding the SkyRail.

Buying and Selling Travellers Cars

by ladybird

If youdecide that you want to see Australia by road then it's a great idea, but be careful about your choice of cars. There are a lot of bad cars out there and you preferably want yours to last all the way round, sometimes it's just luck, but there are ways you can avoid beiong duped by second hand car salesmen. There is a place called Travellers Auto Barn, you will see them advertised quite a lot. It's worth checking out BUT don't buy straightaway. More than likely they will be charging more than you want to spend. There are other ways so be patient. Firstly, check the paper, in the Sydney morning herald there are loads of cars, you're looking for the older ones, ring up to check how far out they are because it might not be worth going 2 hours on the train to see a car that you may not like. Then check the dealers, they usually have cars that they will sell for next to nothing. Again...

Credit Card traps

by Kate-Me

Here is a tip for locals as well as visitors. As of 2003, when using credit card, merchants can charge you about 2% extra in order to re-coup the fees the bank charges them. Ask before using your credit card, especially for a large amount as it's more likely they'll be passing on the extra costs to you. Ask if there's an extra charge for using your Credit card and what are the alternatives (probably only cash)
