I used the Macafferty's/Greyhound bus network of most of my 2 month trip. I found them cheaper and more reliable than Premier. Also, they have tonnes of buses and departure times. I bought a Sydney to Cairns 3 month bus pass and it was on special offer. You just ring up the free number and book yourself on a bus and its simple. I will use them again when I go next year. You also get YHA discount and other cards are also valid. Leave a Comment

If you're low on cash, the bus is the way to go. Flying will cost th same amount of money, but you won't see anything of Australia by flying. Good companies are Greyhound and Premier. Theme: Bus

One of the main Bus lines. McCafferys. They do a lot of overnight drives, where we left at 1am and arrived the next day at 11am. Its not comfterable, but its a good way if you don't have the time to hire a car. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Other than flying there are two main bus companies that will take you up the coast 1st is Oz experience which is a hop on hop off network especially for travellers, here is the web site http://www.ozexperience.com/r /> The second is Greyhound - they are not quite as scary as what I have heard about in canada, but they are used by tourists and average people going to smaller towns between the large cities. This is their web site http://www.greyhound.com.au/r /> Hope this helps. Jo Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The Sunbus system is the bus system that runs throughout the sunshine coast. It also takes you to train hubs, so that you can catch rail rides throughout Australia. The system is pretty good here. Apparently it used to be horrible, but now seems to run pretty well on time and the buses are very clean. The drivers are very helpful, and friendly. You can get your tickets at ticket booths (which are rare to find), purchase your ticket with the driver, or you can get a "go" card that puts money on like a debit card. Treat the "go" card like cash, and don't lose it. Everytime you get on or off a bus you just touch it to a machine and it takes your fare cost off the balance of your card. It is relatively new, so they have some quirks, but it is better than carrying cash. It is fairly cheap to ride the bus, and if you can avoid peak times, you can travel at a discounted rate. If you are a student, make sure that you show your Uni card, and you will get very cheap rates compared to adults. You can also get savings by purchasing weekly, monthly, or bi-yearly passes. Tip: Make sure that you get to the bus stop atleast 5 minutes early. Sometimes the buses get there early and they may take off before the scheduled time.

Travelling up the west coast was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Australia. Boarding the bus in Perth I didn't know anyone. Most people got off the bus in Cervantes and spent 1 night there to see the Pinnacles. I briefly spoke to a couple of people. We got back on the bus. Most people got off the bus inKalbarri and spent 2 nights there - I met a few more people. We got back on the bus. And so it went on....... By time we got to Exmouth there was a group of 10 of us. We had a great time and made our own party wherever we went. So don't worry about travelling alone up the West Coast - by time you get to Broome you'll be desperate for a bit of peace and quiet! 1. Avis and Thrifty are big competitors in Australia. When hiring, compare prices first and then use the price advantage to squeeze the competitor further. I managed to secure 5 days car hire with a large size Holden Commodore from Thrifty at A$128.00! 2. If you plan to hire on the Gold Coast, Thirfty have an excelent little voucher booklet. (So does Avis I believe, but the vouchers vary). This booklet gave me 1-for-1 entry into Movieworld (saves you A$60.00) and 1-for-1 into Ripley's. (I don't know how long this will go for, but as of October 2005 that is the case.) Leave a Comment

A bona-fide overseas visitor may drive in Australia if they hold a valid overseas drivers licence and providing they are licensed for the class of vehicle they will be driving. Licences must be carried at all times when in control of a vehicle. If the drivers licence is not in the English language then a translation must be carried along with the permit. An International Drivers Permit is not sufficient by itself and must be accompanied by a valid drivers permit. For further information either visit the relevant State Road and Transport Authority on arrival Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home
