  • DO NOT BOOK CAR HIRE WITH THRIFTY

I recently rented a car with Thrifty. My daughter left her wallet in the back seat. We contacted the Thrifty 1300 contact number and after 2 hours my call was still not answered. Eventually I called other numbers (at greater cost to myself as these were not the cost of a local call). The wallet was never recovered.

I then cancelled my future reservations with Thrifty.

When I called AVIS my call was answered immediately.

My advice - call around and see how long it takes for the hire car company to answer your call. Because if you really need assistance, you'll need it straight away - not two hours after you dial their number....

    Road Rules/Speed Limits

  • Driving on the left hand side;
Roads in Australia are on the whole far less crowded than in Europe, and on the whole, the freeways and highways are quite good.
The main thing to remember is that our right hand lane is referred to as 'death
lane'. 4 laned freeways you'll find around cities mostly.
A few tips on Melbourne driving...on the road way, there are
also tram lined lanes, with yellow or white line markings, to which indicate what times you may drive in these lanes, and all other
times they must be free for trams.
I really don't recommend driving in
Melbourne in peak hour. Besides it being slow, drivers can be rather impatient....like in many cities, I guess.
I really think Right hand drivers almost need a Road rules book when they come
here, as it's so important to know what you can and can't do!. Though the idea of giving travellers a book and saying 'learn these road rules today' isn't feasible - so here I am putting something basic online. Hopefully it might make some nervous ones feel more confident and safe.
Besides stacks of Traffic lights, of course, we also have a lot of Roundabouts here, both single and
2 lane, which are good if locals use them properly. You're supposed to give way
to any car approaching the roundabout on your right, and any cars already on
the roundabout. Just beware that sometimes people try to overtake you on the roundabout from the right lane when they shouldn't (that's reserved for those turning right) in order to cut in front of you before the road often becomes single lane again.

Zebra pedestrian crossings - White bars marked on the road, with or
without orange flashing lights = give way to all pedestrians. White bars plus
red or orange lights: you only have to stop if the light is red or flashing.
Speed limits: built up areas in Victoria, usually 50 everywhere (other states
    tend to differ). Other: 60 zones, 70, 80, open road = 100, Freeway 110 km/hr.

    Cairns to Brisbane

  • I actually disagree that the drive from Cairns to Brisbane is boring--There are so many wonderful places to explore-- driving south from Cairns you will find Innisfail--Mission Beach and Tully--Hinchenbrook Island--Ingham--Townsville and Magnetic Island. Do stop off at the Whitsundays and take in the outback and the scrub along the longer stretches of the highway you may find lots of animal life in the wild especially at dawn and dusk.If you have a co driver it is easier.Do turn off the main highway and visit a few of the old towns along the way --you will be pleasantly suprised.Yappon and Mackay area and Fraser Island are worth seeing.I have done this trip many times and still enjoy the contrast of the coast and inland outback drives.I agree to drive south regarding the sun in your eyes and always take plenty of drinking water. Have a nice trip.

Underage Car Hire for 18 year old driver

  • I recently went on a holiday and had booked a rental car with a big company. When I arrived at the Gold Coast, the staff were extremely rude as I was only 18 years old and would not help me at all. I did not get a car from them even though I had booked the hire car for my holiday almost four months in advance. I looked everywhere as I did not want to spoil the holiday for me and my girlfriend. We had saved for over a year for this special time.
On the Gold Coast, I accidentally found a car hire company called All Age Car rentals who rent cars to Drivers from 18 years on and they were extremely understanding and saved our holiday from disaster.
If anyone looks for hiring a car, for young drivers and families, I would certainly say "Go All Age Car rentals". you are great.

    Buy your own car

  • If you go to stay longer then 4 months, definitely buy your own car and pickup backpackers on your way. It will save loads of money and time. And most important, you don’t need to go on a bus where you freeze your ass off, or even worse sit next to a Aboriginal….. distances are huge.
anyway I spent 6 months and could sell the car for the same as I bought it.
TIP: Poeple are hot for 4WD's

  • We hired a Thrifty car in Darwin, came out from our hotel at Kakadu and found a flat tyre. We changed the tyre and returned the car to the airport They charged us $109 for a replacement tyre. The tyre was far from new- what a scam.
