I did the mistake to choose the trains to get around OZ. I had done interrail around Europe before so stubit me expectet something a like. The trainsystem in OZ is baaaaaaaaaad! Don´t use it. It doesn´t go to the places you want to go to. U have to pay extra for bus to right place, train goes slow! and yeah you are quicker in every other way you choose! Rent car, buy car, go with buses, fly... anything but trains darlings! Leave a Comment Theme: Train

I took the train from Adelaide to Perth and it was absolutely amazing. You can go all the way from Sydney to Perth, or from Darwin to Adelaide. It'll cost a bit more than flying and taking the bus, but it's a great way to see the country and definetely worth the money.

If you are looking for a transport - anywhere - you may find useful MapsGuides travel website and its transport links. There are valid links to many kinds of transports (buses, trains, airlines, ships etc.) in selected countries. I am using it quite often. Petr Leave a Comment

Take the Ghan to absolutely everywhere you can...its really good fun, you meet loads of interesting people, your not gradually destroying the environment by flying and the best bits are the views of sunset/sunrise over the outback, something unlike anything else ever! Also its helps to give you a sense of how massive Australia actually is...the journey took something like 25 hours from Adelaide to Alice Springs i think, but it was well worth it! But dont have the pizzas they sell in the food bit. But apart from that... Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Trains to the center can be a real bargain, I paid only AU$140 from Melbourne to Alice Springs (this was the student price, apparantly the same price applies for those with backpacker cards). The train is called The Ghan, runs once a week Melbourne-Adelaide-Alice Springs and once Sydney-Adelaide-Alice Springs. Good way to get a feel for the size of the country, and also much more comfortable than buses. On the route there I played cards with a Mexican and an American girl, and was witness to a large group of middle aged women getting louder and more drunk in the buffet car as it got later and later. As the previous poster said the distances are huge, For example if you wanted to go from Sydney to Cairns the drive is about 2400km or a 2 and a half, 3 hour flight! Greyhound Australia have some great deals if you still want to do it that way or i believe Qantas offers a boomerang pass which is a series of substantially discounted flights bought in bulk to overseas visitors. SYdney to brisbane is about 800km and Melbourne to Sydney is 800km anymore questions feel free to ask me! Cheers Cam Theme: Airplane

Probably on a Jumbo Jet with a major airline. Qantas took us and I would say that it was one of the best airlines I have ever used. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

The best fares to Australia NZ from Europe is usually from London. Singapore airlines is a good choice, it flies out of Barcelona to Singapore and you would be allowed a stop over there, and then fly to Melbourne, go up the coast to sydney and Brisbane or melbourne to ayer rock to sydney to brisbane or cairns, some variant of that. you will have to buy tickets within australia using either qantas or jetstar or tiger or virgin blue. then fly one way from brisbane or sydney or melbourne to auckland and then continue your journey from there and fly back from auckland or christchurch back to singapore. My own preferance would be to buy a Madrid to Auckland ticket with a stop over in Melbourne or sydney. on Qantas.. the initial portion mad to lhr would be on BA. then to melbourne with one stop in singapore but no stopover.. this airfare would be about 1400 euros which is not a bad price for the distance you are covering. mas o menos vos sabes, muchas lugares para visitar en australia, pero largos distancias, pero nueva zelandia es mas compacto, y puede usar coches. sin duda, la naturaleza es mas verde y bella en neuva zelandia ( no menciona asi a los australianos). estuve en abril en cairns, muy linda y turistica, pero en dos meses puede visitar varios lugares en australia. Leave a Comment Theme: AirplanePhone: qantas.com.au

This isn't a tip about transportation within Australia but about car hire overseas. The first 2 trips we took in 2002 and 2003 our travel agent organised our car hire, but by the time of our 3rd trip in 2005 we were game enough to do it all on the internet. I checked out the Hertz site as this is who we had used before and checked where we could pick and and leave our car and bearing in mind that we wanted to pick up in Vancouver Canada and deposit in San Francisco USA that created a problem in itself. The initial price was around $2,000AUD. This included drop off fees as we were leaving in the USA. We decided to contact Hertz here in Australia and found to our surprise that if you book and pay everything prior to leaving that you save a lot of money. The other thing to keep in mind to save more money when travelling across countries is to do 2 separate bookings, in our case one in Canada, where we picked in Vancouver and left in Victoria in Vancouver Island and then picked up our 2nd vehicle in Seattle and left it in San Francisco. The total cost of the hire for 3 weeks in Canada and 1 week in USA was $1300AUD so you can see this is a huge saving. My suggestion is to check the websites first of whatever hire company you want to use and get an idea of the costings, makes of car etc then ring the company direct. We are going to Italy end of this year and I did the same thing - on the net the price for about 3 weeks was just over $1500AUD and when doing direct with Hertz it is costing only $1100AUD. Good luck! Theme: Car/Motor Home
