Hi, booking Virgin Blue online in advance will usually get you the best flight at the best price. They have a fairly good reward points system known as Velocity, you gain flight credits everytime you fly with them.
Don't forget to sign up. It's free.

    Australia's newest airline

If you're going around Australia... air travel is almost a must in this huge country of ours. Unless you are taking a steady driving holiday and have plenty of time... flying is your next best option.

Our major airlines can help you plan your trip. There are discounts for booking over the internet that aren't available any where else. If you would rather phone your bookings in, there are plenty of package deals and holiday escapes if you book in advance.

Qantas - arguably one of the best airlines in the world.

Virgin Blue - the newest airline to rival Australias committed customers, they offer amazing online discounts and one way tickets.

    Both websites are shown below.

    Happy travelling!

Once you are in Australia you prbably want to cram in as much as you can. Though most people don't have enough time to do all of Australia overland, you could take a plane from one side of Oz to the other side. There are three main companies offering domestic flights around Australia. They are Jet Star, Qantas and Virgin Blue.

Australia's national carrier is Qantas and is excellent. I flew them from Europe to Australia and back and also from Australia to New Zealand. I also took two domestic flights from Darwin to Adelaide and from Adelaide to Sydney. The service is very good and the planes they fly are of the best quality. Click here to go to their website.

Virgin Blue I flew once from Melbourne to Darwin. This flight was also very good, but since they are a budget airline no food is served aboard the plane that is included in the ticket price. You have to buy everything yourself. Virgin Blue also flies to New Zealand and many Pacific Islands. Check out the site of Virgin Blue here.

Finally Jet Star is owned by Qantas and also is a low-coster. While I was in Australia they just started this airline up, and I read many negative reviews in the papers. However what can you expect from a low-coster? You just want the flight to be very cheap and safe. Jet Star flies mainly around in the eastern states, Tasmania and Adelaide. If you want to check out New Zealand... Jet Star also flies to Christchurch. You can check the rates here.

Do compare prices between all airlines before booking, because sometimes Qantas is the cheapest option, even though it's not a low coster. Also take into consideration, the purchase of food and drinks on the low costers that you have to add to the price of the cheap ticket. On Jet Star you can now also collect Qantas Frequent Flyer Points.

There are many chances that you fly to Sydney from abroad. Once in the airport is rather easy to get to the city. There is a City Train that takes you to any "Metro" stop downtown for about 24 AUS $. There is also a shuttle bus, a little cheaper, but is not as easy to find. I took the train when I arrived. But when I left, I asked in the hostel reception and they booked for me a minibus that costed about 18 AUS $. It takes aprox 30 minutes to get there.

We flew on 4 Qantas flights within Australia and everything was on time with few problems. Our flights were arranged well ahead of time by our travel agent and if you book from overseas there are savings. The flights are fairly full so advance booking is important. Note internal luggage restrictions are much lower than international.

I travelled by Greyhound bus both times in Australia. They take you pretty much everywhere you want to go and there's even some free tours included.
There are many different passes to choose from; some with set routes and some where you purchase kms.
First time we had an "Aussie Highlights" buspass taking us round the east half of Australia. A 1-day tour of Kakadu and a 3-day tour around the Red Centre were included.
Second time we'd bought the "All Australian" pass, but we had to have at change since Louise had broken her ankle and we couldn't travel as fast as we needed. There were no problems in changing the bus pass at all!
Since I still haven't got a driver's license this will definitely be my mode of transport the next time in OZ as well.

If you are considering travelling around OZ, the most common way is by bus. The most known bus company is Greyhound, and they are also the only company that goes everywhere in the country. HOWEVER, if you are ONLY travelling the east coast, I must recommend PREMIER MOTOR SERVICE. They have bus routes from Sydney all the way to Cairns in the north, and from Sydney to Melbourne. They stop in the same towns, and they are about HALF the price of Greyhound´s!! So check it out. You can save allot of money.
Their website is quite old and primitive- don´t get scared. I travelled with them many times.

If you're a first timer to Sydney, get 'Sydney Pass' which is the best way for easy access anytime, anywhere. Once you're used to the streets, a visit to the car rental would be wise if you still want to go around the district or suburbs. I got myself a Ford KA from Budget Rental after 3 days of bus hopping. However, be prepared to pay for the car entrance fees and tickets!

Mccafferty's aka Greyhound is the cheapest way to get around Oz. For the most part the drivers are cool and you get a break from the bus every few hours. Sure it isn't the fastest way to go but at least you get to stop over in a few small outback towns you never would have seen if you hadn't taken the bus. The small outback towns will give you the real feel of oz outside of the cities.
