Australia is nearly the size of the US, and the vast bulk of it is thinly populated. The roads seem to be excellent, but there can be certain things to consider before driving long distances. If you're caught in the weather, you might be miles from shelter. Kangaroos are known to be a road hazard, and night driving can be a dark and lonely experience. It can also take several days to drive between cities. For these reasons, it would usually be cheaper,safer, and better to fly, especially since gasoline is more expensive. Qantas offers boomerang passes that allow you to visit more than one destination on a ticket for a low price, but Virgin Blue is their discount carrier. In addition, there are numerous small or mid-sized local airlines that can provide cheap and easy transportation.
