Virgin Blue Airlines

by darthmilmo

I tend to refer to this airline as the chicken bus of the sky. They offer cheap airfare across Australia. I had a wonderful experience with them flying from Melbourne to Hobart (return). Plans are on the way to offer international flights to New Zealand and possibly Hong Kong.

Get your own wheels!

by stigel

Don't rely on the tours, Oz experience etc. they take you to ALL the tourist traps and you miss out on the really good stuff! I managed to find a decent van with a friend for just au$2000, it took us 13000 km, without major problems! A lot of people recognized the van on the east coast, it's done the trip MANY times before :)

Drive on the left side of the road

by dlandt

Australia drives on the left, a skill which is surprisingly easy to master. Despite being rather intimidated when I first sat in the driver's seat, the only recurring problem I had was in signalling. If you follow your instincts, you turn your windshield wipers on. The first once or twice you make a right turn can take some thought, after that, its a breeze. In all I would say it took less than ten minutes to become acclimated. Avoid distractions during the first few minutes, pay attention, and you should be OK.

Speeding

by dlandt

While driving in South Australian and Victoria, it became readily apparent that Australians generally obey the speed limit. I guess this is because of the cameras, but they were disabled when I was there. Because they normally relied on the cameras, they didn't have much in the way of traffic enforcement. This led to something of a Nirvana for the Daring, but Australians just don't drive this way. The speed limit is usually 100 or 110 kph and they stick to it. Passing someone at 140 or 150 can earn you a rather horrified look and I didn't see a single example of aggressive or daring driving the entire week i drove.

Distances are long

by dlandt

Australia is nearly the size of the US, and the vast bulk of it is thinly populated. The roads seem to be excellent, but there can be certain things to consider before driving long distances. If you're caught in the weather, you might be miles from shelter. Kangaroos are known to be a road hazard, and night driving can be a dark and lonely experience. It can also take several days to drive between cities. For these reasons, it would usually be cheaper, safer, and better to fly, especially since gasoline is more expensive. Qantas offers boomerang passes that allow you to visit more than one destination on a ticket for a low price, but Virgin Blue is their discount carrier. In addition, there are numerous small or mid-sized local airlines that can provide cheap and easy transportation. We drove from Adelaide to Melbourne, and it was a very enjoyable experience, but I would suggest you drive...

Sydney Rail / Bus / Ferry Passes

by Ringo2002

In the days of the Airport Explorer bus being the best way of getting to the city, it was worth conisdering the Sydney Pass. Now this has ceased, consider the various Rail / Bus / Ferry Passes - with your airport fee added in - these are a real bargain if you want to see some of the suburbs - although you do have to take the slow ferry to Manly - all the better for viewing the scenery.

Melbourne trams, Melbourne's...

by Bill_Steg

I AM SELLING MY VW KOMBI (AUTOMATIC) CAMPERVAN IN MARCH ? APRIL. ANYONE INTERRESTED LET ME KNOW A.S.A.P.Melbourne trams, Melbourne's tram system covers the inner city suburbs extensively. The FREE CITY CIRCLE TRAM runs in both directions around the entire city centre, at 10 minute intervals, between 10am and 6pm, daily. Best bet: a weekly ticket $ 46 (Concession $21.30) for the three zones. This also allows tavel on some trains into the country on weekends! Check with: www.victrips.com.au

Rail Passes

by Simbiosis

If you are staying more than 7 days in Sydney, you can buy a "Weekly RailPass". You'll be able to travel by train as many times as you need it in the Sydney Harbour Area.Anyhow, there are many options available for cheap transportation... Ask in any train station for the option that suits you.

Flying?!?!?

by CandS

I guess for anyone out of Australia the best and quickest way to visit is by plane. ;) I recommend that if you're coming from Europe it is worth having a stop over somewhere...even if only for a night. We flew all the way from Sydney to Copenhagen with a one hour stop and we were VERY tired...a couple of days somewhere half way would have really helped out.

Car/Vehicle Hire

by CandS

If you want to hire a car, bus, motor home, truck etc there are plenty of places in Australia to hire them...The most popular companies are: Avis - www.avis.com - phone 02 8374 2870 Hertz - www.hertz.com.au - phone 02 9669 2444 Thrifty - www.thrifty.com.au - phone 02 9582 1701 Budget - www.budget.com.au - phone 132848Of course there are many other hire companies in Australia, these are just the most common/well known...not to say they are better than the others but they would be my choice over others... ;)
