Driving in Australia

by CandS

If you are driving around Australia there are many road rules which you must obey:* You must drive on the left hand side of the road.* You cannot drive while talking/SMSing on your mobile phone.* Everyone must wear a seatbelt, even in the back seat.* Most cities/towns now have school zones of 40 KPH (kilometres per hour) and residential zones of 50 KPH so be aware of your speed zones - you almost definitely will get booked if you speed.* You cannot drive with more than a 0.05 reading of alcohol, or none at all for "P" & "L" plates (learners) or under 25 year olds with a licence less than 3 years old.If you stick to these rules then you should be right. Be careful & drive safe and you'll have a fantastic holiday. :)

This is a great Hop On/Hop Off bus service which travels all over Australia. You can choose the length of time you pass want your pass to last and then travel anywhere on the bus network. This is ideal for the independant traveller. You have cheap transport and are bound to meet new friends along the way. In many locations (Hervey Bay, QLD included), backpacker hostels organise to pick travellers up from the bus.

Electronic Travel Authority

by phil_uk_net

There isn't an obvious place to put this type of information on VT but I think it could be useful.Visitors to Australia, other than those holding Australian or New Zealand passports, will require a visa or an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority). The ETA can be applied for on-line and is good for multiple visits within the next 12 months for up to 3 months maximum per visit. All information is held on-line so no stamp or anything is required to be added to your passport. Airlines and immigration authorities have access to the on-line database so can tell whether you are authorised to travel. The cost of each ETA application is 20 Australian dollars.Full details can be found via the web site link below.

Getting There

by keeweechic

By Air : the only way to get downunder except by Cruise Ship is to fly. The main gateway cities are on the east coast, with Sydney handling the majority of passengers. Other major gateways are Brisbane and Cairns, Darwin (from Asia), Perth (from Asia, UK and Africa), and Melbourne. Other cities with international airports serving limited countries are Port Headland, Adelaide, and Hobart. Also, try to avoid weekend arrivals.

Any which way you can...

by CandS

Australia is soooo big so seeing everything isn't always easy for visitors. For us travelling in the car is the best option... I would recommend hiring/buying a car for travellers who plan to stay a while (a few months or more). That way you can see much more for yourself - and spend more time in the places you like best... Otherwise I think the buses (or planes for longer distances) are the way to go. The buses are fairly cheap and usually really well run. Unfortunately we don't have a wonderful train system like in Europe... Although you can get trains in some parts of Australia which are fairly cheap and comfortable.

Road Rules/Speed Limits

by Kate-Me

Driving on the left hand side; Roads in Australia are on the whole far less crowded than in Europe, and on the whole, the freeways and highways are quite good. The main thing to remember is that our right hand lane is referred to as 'deathlane'. 4 laned freeways you'll find around cities mostly.A few tips on Melbourne driving...on the road way, there arealso tram lined lanes, with yellow or white line markings, to which indicate what times you may drive in these lanes, and all othertimes they must be free for trams. I really don't recommend driving inMelbourne in peak hour. Besides it being slow, drivers can be rather impatient....like in many cities, I guess. I really think Right hand drivers almost need a Road rules book when they comehere, as it's so important to know what you can and can't do!. Though the idea of giving travellers a book and saying 'learn these road rules today' isn't...

cheap way to get around Australia

by andreja20

I bought a bus ticket to get from Sydney to Cairns which cost about AUD 250 and was valid for three months. I could get off the bus wherever I wanted and if I decided to continue my trip I just needed to make a phone call and book my seat. So this was an absolutely easy and not at all expensive way to explore Australia's beauty.

Bus is better

by Kate-Me

Australia's train services between capital cities are quite good, but outside regional centres there are either limited services or none at all. Bus offers a lot more flexibility and there are companies with hop-on-hop-off packages which can take you most of the places you want to go.

Out & About in Melbourne City

by O_Reef

Tram - FREE City Circle Trams, which goes around the Melbourne CBD (Central Business District), easing your journey which is best explored by feet.Tickets can be pre purchased at milk bars, or convenient stores like Quix, 7-11, etc. to avoid long queues or heavy change in the wallet, or even having a blue with the inspectors on board.

Qantas 'Hop around Australia'...

by emerald125

I am not sure if this is still available but its worth checking into before you leave your home country.Qantas 'Hop around Australia' fares Qantas has a fare at the moment that works out almost as cheap as the bus. One way to Cairns from Sydney is $165.00 then one way Cairns to Darwin $165.00then Darwin to Alice Springs $165.00 and Alice to Sydney $165.00 This is a great way to see this part of Australia as busing it up takes sooooo long. Check the www.travel.com.au site for details and to make sure the fare is current when you are visiting.
