Buy your own car

by schwendi76

If you go to stay longer then 4 months, definitely buy your own car and pickup backpackers on your way. It will save loads of money and time. And most important, you don’t need to go on a bus where you freeze your ass off, or even worse sit next to a Aboriginal….. distances are huge.anyway I spent 6 months and could sell the car for the same as I bought it.TIP: Poeple are hot for 4WD's

Do it yourself!

by tini58de

We travelled thousands of miles by car - or rather minibus. It was a great way to travel, since we were rather independant, could decide where we wanted to go and got used to driving on the left side of the road rather quickly!!!

Australian Pacific Tours

by tennis1

We were on four APT tours and found they were on time and very well run. Any hotels used or food provided was excellent. The commentary on the tours was quite interesting and made up for the loss of flexibility from travelling on your own. One tip to lessen time on a bus is to take the overnight option on many tours rather than returning to the same city each day. We did this on the Kakadu tour.

Qantas

by tennis1

We flew on 4 Qantas flights within Australia and everything was on time with few problems. Our flights were arranged well ahead of time by our travel agent and if you book from overseas there are savings. The flights are fairly full so advance booking is important. Note internal luggage restrictions are much lower than international.

3) BUYING A CAR!

by CptKangaroo

Forget about all buyback deals, a buy back dealer will give you about 40% only! Buyig+sellign privately saves you heaps of money -if you don't have this time, rent a car...Buy local newspapers, check out adds. If you have no idea of cars at all, find someone who has a least a bit of knowledge. Or try your luck. If the seller looks dodgy -forget about it.1) You have to show a current road worthy certificate (RWC) to the department of transportation office, when you register the car, so don't buy a car without RWC, because if you do, a mechanic might tell you that you need 5000bucks spare parts to make your 500$-bargain roadworthy... 2) The car should be registered (includes third party injury insurance) for the next few month when you buy it so you don't have to worry about that. rego will be transferred.3) Provide a valid passport and drivers licence 4) You have to provided something...

1) RENTING A CAMPERVAN (up to...

by CptKangaroo

1) RENTING A CAMPERVAN (up to 8 weeks)Vast distances, difficult climates so if you are here: get a car or (better) a camper! Don't be fooled by those bus passes, like oz experience or something. If you want to see more remote areras, what means anything off the bus route, you'll pay heaps of money for getting there with one of those touristic one-day-adventures. For up to 8 weeks I would recommend a campervan (available for under 50$/day). Thats 50 bucks for transportation and accomadation for 2 people (three if you don't mind lying together very cosy...). Fuel is cheap, cook for yourself and get anywhere!BUT BEWARE: Those cheap campervans don't give you cover-all insurance! Is looks good to take the low insurance 'cause you might not need it anyway, but IF you need it -it's better to have one than.WHAT TO LOOK AT:----What is my liabilty in a two-car crash? (should be zero!)-----Does a...

Airlines in Australia will wait for you

by pilgrim55

We flew Quantas from Sydney to Cairns and our travel agent typed the time in wrong on our itinerary. So, we were late for our flight. Quantas had paged us several times and held up the flight. That's quite a switch from how things are handled elsewhere, wouldn't you say mate?

Bus to Bondi

by pilgrim55

We took the train out from Sydney to Bondi, but that doesn't take you directly there. From there you catch a bus for the last little leg of the journey. It takes you through Australian suburbia, so you get a chance to see great bungalows and gardens along the way.

Sydney Pass

by pilgrim55

If you are going to be in Sydney for a few days, we recommend buying a Sydney pass. It is good for travel by bus, train, and boat in and around Sydney. This is one of the bus stop signs that you can find everywhere. These buses are narrated, hop-on-hop-off type of buses. The pass is also good on the trains -- some of which are underground and others above ground, as well as the boats in the harbor.

First, Sydney Explorer. Then, get a car!

by adura

If you're a first timer to Sydney, get 'Sydney Pass' which is the best way for easy access anytime, anywhere. Once you're used to the streets, a visit to the car rental would be wise if you still want to go around the district or suburbs. I got myself a Ford KA from Budget Rental after 3 days of bus hopping. However, be prepared to pay for the car entrance fees and tickets!
