There is a modern day dungeon...

by miyls

There is a modern day dungeon in Sydney. One street back from the sleaze, glitz and noise of Darlinghurst Avenue, Kings Cross, one can take a lift down three floors to a concrete crypt-like space with barred windows and spartan benches and tables. International inmates will spend anything from a few days to a few weeks cooped up here. This is the Kings Cross Car Market. The car market houses a transient collection of the elderly and infirm of Australia’s campervans and station wagons, all for sale, and attended by a varied assortment of foreign owners. This museum group of Ford Falcons, Holden Kingswoods, VW Kombis and the like, once here have entered a vicious circle. They will pass through a string of backpacker owners, often changing hands at the car market. Between sales, they will be driven relentlessly around the continent until they finally expire. Each day from nine in the morning,...

Australia is huge. So if you have much time you can travel by bus (Greyhound or McAffertys are quite comfortable). If not take a plane. There are also many offers of tours you can do (like OzExperience). These tours are a good way to explore the country if you are traveling alone. You meet people and see different things off the big roads.Unfortunally this way to travel is expensive. You can take a spaceship, too :)

Getting there and back is the only problem with the trip. It will take up 18 to 24 hours to get there from the US east coast or a minimum of 12 hours flying time from LA to Sydney. If one can sleep on a crowded airliner the trip should not be too bad. The jet lag will still probably get you, since there is a huge time difference.Getting there and back is the only problem with the trip. There, buses and taxis are available.

If you're coming from Europe,...

by jrs1234

If you're coming from Europe, it's a very very long way! I'd definitely recommend a stop-over, as it really takes the sting out of the jet-lag. Singapore is a very good place to stop over, as is Hong Kong. It's also a reasonable idea, if you're coming from afar, to compare prices of a round-the-world ticket with a straightforward return. You may be able to get to more places than you thought - if you've got the time! If you want to take internal flights, it's often worth booking these with your main ticket - you can get some very good discounts.Australia is a very easy country to get around - flying is a little bit expensive, but if you're on a budget the buses are cheap, and you'll see more. There are also tour companies who'll take you to interesting places. In South-East and Central Australia, I'd recommend travelling with the Wayward Bus Company who operate from Adelaide - check out...

Yellow submarine or what!

by smoox

Getting there? What a question - by plane! I found that Quantas was not all that expensive, compared to Lufthansa. I just had some difficulty connecting my stopovers to where I wanted to go in Australia. Hongkong-Darwin? Forget it!The best way to get around AND stay on your own is certainly by car - rental car. Pick it up at an airport, drop it at a destination, board one of those Ansett Planes, hop to your next destination, pick up the next car....

by chris_i79

Since I am sure it is one long boat ride, I would recommend flying. But be prepared for a long flight and take sleeping pills to reduce the jet lag once you arrive.I found buses the easiest way to get around. There are roamer passes available that allow you to get on and off as many times as you want to between 2 cities (as long as you stay going the same direction). I think Cairns to Sydney cost me $179A, This was back in 2000 so things may have changed. If you are short on time VirginBlue (www.virginblue.com.au) offers flights to major centers at good prices.

the best way to see what australia has 2 really offer is to go interstate by bus instead of plane..its abit cheaper and heaps more fun.busses are the best sh*t 2 go with while going interstate..to get around big citys go by trains or trams which are found in adelaide and melbourne..and i think theres one in sydney..busses are alright i guess.

Getting around East Australia...

by JimWilliams

Getting around East Australia is easy with a number of options. Opting for the coaches I purchased a ticket with Greyhound coaches. This option allows you to sleep in the coach seat while travelling through the night. The West Coast is more difficult than the east and having seen the coach stop listing I decided to opt for a number of smaller backpacker tours. With the major coach companies several changeovers must be made to see the key sights. During my trip I meet too many travellers disappointed with the main coach options. I suggest taking Easirider Backpackers tours from Perth to Broome. More expensive but numerous trips are thrown in making life easier. These tours comprise off small vans with up to 20 individuals and it is extremely easy to get to know others. There is the option of stopping over at the most popular destinations and jumping on future tours. For Broome to Darwin...

If you're coming to Australia...

by iandsmith

If you're coming to Australia - you're flying! Well, that is, unless you came by boat, in which case you're not!Depends what you want to see and what you can afford. When I visited Tasmania recently we hired a motorhome and I cannot recommend that highly enough. I think we got ours through Cruisin' Tasmania and the owner of the business also has a video shop as a sideline so you can take your pick of movies with you! (see my Tassie travelogue).Australia is also a motorcyclist's paradise, once you get out of the city.Australia doesn't have great intercity rail like Europe but some of the major trips (e.g. Sydney - Melbourne) are O.K., other than that it's hire a car or bus it.Always remember, distance may be a problem. This shot is what you can expect to see if you make it to the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

Air New Zealand stewardesses...

by fast_lane1

Air New Zealand stewardesses (sorry flight attendants) are so beautiful.I also flew Qantas while in Australia and that was great also. Qanatas never crashed. If you go to the west coast there is nothing worth seeing from the train. The Nullabor Plain (SP?) was better left undiscovered. Take interesting company if you do it, because from Adelaide it takes two days.I used the bus. VERY LONG distances between cities. If you can afford to fly do it.
