by Lutz_H

I bought a car as I planned to stay longer. It's certainly cheaper than a rental and quite common in Australia. There are several places specialized on used car sales for tourists but watch out for so-called bargains or good deals that a salesman wants to talk you into. Most of the times it's an old beat-up wreck that was previously owned by another traveler and left behind for its poor condition. Make sure it's registered and insured, otherwise you have to do that yourself which is not only time consuming but also difficult without permanent address in Australia. Eventually a hotel address will do.

by FireMike

No brainer here, 99% chance you are going to have to fly.I did alot of bussing. Greyhound screwed me over so I would recommend McCafferty's. You can often buy a long distance ticket (eg. Sydney to Cairns) but with unlimited stops in between provided travel is done within a month. I think I paid around $200 for my ticket like that. I was lucky to get a really cheap (i.e. free) car when I was living in Cairns. Mind you it was old, unreliable and POLKA DOTTED with a map of Oz on the hood.

by pollon

For my experience if you want to do internal flights, normally the national flagship airlines offers better prices and all in all it turns out to be the cheapest price. But check by your best liked travel agency, fares changes continuosly. In Western Australia the campervan is a great solution: gives you a lot of freedom and lowers the overnight costs. But it's not exactly the quicker way to travel because of the particular.. let's say 'shape' of the roads (we say shaped like a donkey back) and the reason of this is to let water flow away during the wet season. So forget to push on the accelerator as you do home!!!

by Goulu

Australia is large. Of course you can fly from one city to another and visit all in 2 weeks, but you will miss something VERY important : to realize how large Australia is, and how life in the bush is different from the city...Evry australian is a camper, so everything is done to favour camping. You'll find automatic BBQs and camping grounds in every small town.

by kiwiwahine

Bowen has a train station but unfortunately not all trains stop here so you need to check timetables. The train tends to be more expensive then the bus but the comfort factor is higher and there is always the dining car. All train services are non-smoking so you have to jump on and off at stations to get a nicotene fix. Sleepers are available for longer journeys but you need to book in advance and they can be very costly. There is an express service by tilt train from Brisbane to Rockhampton which is being extended to Cairns, but is still under construction. There are scenic trains in QLD too including the Spirit Of The Outback from Brisbane to Longreach, The Inlander from Townsville to Mt Isa, The Gulflander from Normanton to Croydon and the very popular Kuranda Scenic Railway from Cairns to Kuranda.

by kiwiwahine

The major competitor is McCaffertys which also runs Greyhound in Australia. They pale in comparision to overseas bus services. There is a new coach service called 'Premiere' which also competes on the East Coast, I have not used them so cannot rate their service. If you want to head inland to the Queensland Outback you may have to go by train or local carriers as the bigger companies do not service a lot of these routes.

by majoe

Well, as only angels have wings, the besrt way to go there is to take a coach but one can either go by car, on a plane or by train. However the coach system is particularly good in the sense that you cannot miss any of the sight seeing and would not stop every hour because your car is about to break down.

by ruudje31

When you live in Europe and you're going down under, remember it's a very long trip. The flight from Europe to Singapore or some other stepover place in Asia takes about 12 hours.Your connecting flight to Australia takes about 5 to 8 hours depending on your destination. When you think this is to much for you all at once, then consider a stopover in Asia for a few days.To my opinion,Singapore Airlines is the best company to fly with. Why ? they offer a great service and they have got very friendly stewardesses, but thats not all. Every chair in a Singapore A.lines aircraft has got its own t.v.screen,and you can choose from a wide variety of movies, music and computer games, and to my experience that helps you a lot to kill time on a long flight.Travelling by bus is a good way to get around Australia. However, when you are travelling long distances, maybe flying is a better option.

by Jo_katz

Sinagpore Airlines offered an easy and comfortable journey to Australia. Obviously if you want to do any stop overs your limited to Singapore but for me that wasn't a problem at all. Sinagpore Airlines offer some really reasonable stop ove rdeals (about £30 for a decent hotel room and less if your going to be sharing with someone else). Alternativly you could look at some of the hostels but to be quitte honnest Sinapore isn't big on hostels so it's probably not going to work out that much more expensive to stay in a hotel which will include your airport transfer.Singagpore Airlines offer a very high standard of service. The food is good and the staff are friendly. In short if you face the long journey from Europe i'm sure Singapore Airlines is one of the best ways to do it.

by Jo_katz

Busing it around Australia is definately the best way to do it - it's cheap and it's the only way to appreciate the sheer size of the country. I went with Oz experience, on the up side your bus driver can also be your tour guide; point out things to do (or not to do), show you good accommodation etc. It's also useful to be able to ask your driver to do supermarket stops etc. On the down side they are more expensive than Greyhound or McCaffertys and they depart less frequently. However Oz experience are completely flexible so you can hop on and off as you please. If your told that you should book your bus ticket before you depart for Oz because its cheaper. Ignore this, its no cheaper and your better off arranging transport when you've decided when and where you want go. Internal airfares can also be purchased more easily and cheaper once you've arrived.
