the best way to travel in Oz is to buy or rent a car or campervan. The best, but most expensive way is ofcourse to get yourself a 4X4.Always see you have enough food, fuel, water and spare part in your vehicle if you are planning to drive in the outback of Australia.
During our 4 weeks stay Wayward Bus Company took care of our transportation and accomodation. Very good buss drivers. They knew a lot about culture and nature/wild life. Check them at www.Waywardbus.com.au.

It's a long swim so I'd fly if I were you, sailing isn't a bad way to go if you've got the time! The busses are good (McCafferty's or the Greyhound)There is the Oz Experience but I didn't do that but the guys on it seemed to enjoy it, they just seemed to be too tied to a schedule to enjoy some places.Hitching is a great way too.
By Combie. Buy one, or better yet, get a ride in a friend's. If you can't get the combie there over the high seas, try getting it around the roads of Oz at least. It's not the fastest way to travel, but it's surely the coolest.

Trains to the center can be a real bargain, I paid only AU$140 from Melbourne to Alice Springs (this was the student price, apparantly the same price applies for those with backpacker cards). The train is called The Ghan, runs once a week Melbourne-Adelaide-Alice Springs and once Sydney-Adelaide-Alice Springs. Good way to get a feel for the size of the country, and also much more comfortable than buses. On the route there I played cards with a Mexican and an American girl, and was witness to a large group of middle aged women getting louder and more drunk in the buffet car as it got later and later.
This is how I got here: flight AMS-London-LA-Auckland-Melbourne.In LA I left my new hiking shoes, sunglasses, very useful jacket, extremely useful notebook full of notes for my thesis, extremely useful pack of graphs and articles for my thesis, and a piece of cheese. Tip: DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING ON THE PLANE WHEN YOU DISEMBARK! The cleaners will take it and either throw it away, eat it, or just steal it. Public transport in Melbourne is not very extensive. The train network is ok, but if you have to get around in the suburbs like me (from Monash Uni, Clayton campus) you have a slight problem. After 9 pm there are no buses there. I spent 2.5 hours getting home yesterday, from a shopping center about 6 km away from my house, carrying at least 20kg of shopping in those plastic bags that tend to cut into your hands after about 3 seconds! Also remember that usually shops close at 5.30, I found...
There's a lot of backpackers who buys a car for the stay in Oz. Look for notes in the hostels, ads in free backpacker magazines as TNT and others. In Sydney, check the Weekly Trading Post on Tuesdays for used cars advertisements, and the Daily Telegraph Mirror and Sydney Morning Herald on Saturdays. You can drive in the same state for 3 months with your home country driver's licence. Afterwards you need an International Driving Permit.

Flying is the quickest way, Changing planes at each airport is simple, By the trains in Sydney, Buy a pass it works out a lot cheaper and can be used for the ferries and buses as well. Fly to each place, it is just as cheapas the trains anda lot quicker.
I would imagine that flying to Australia would be the best way to get there... I flew with Qantas into Sydney from Canada. Yes it was a very long flight but made somewhat bearable due to the level of service by the airline. Air New Zealand also provides excellent service.Australia is a HUGE country. If you can afford it, I would recommend flying to a destination such as Sydney, travel around the area, and then fly across the country to Perth. That was what most people I met while I was there were doing.
