Australia is big... really big. Flying is a great, and cheap option. check out these domestic airlines...http://www.virginblue.com.au/http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/cheap-flights/standard.aspxhttp://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/home/au/en

Sydney airport

by SirRichard

There are many chances that you fly to Sydney from abroad. Once in the airport is rather easy to get to the city. There is a City Train that takes you to any "Metro" stop downtown for about 24 AUS $. There is also a shuttle bus, a little cheaper, but is not as easy to find. I took the train when I arrived. But when I left, I asked in the hostel reception and they booked for me a minibus that costed about 18 AUS $. It takes aprox 30 minutes to get there.

Manly Ferry

by SirRichard

A nice daytrip from Sydney is visiting the nearby beach of Manly. You can take a ferry from Circular Quay (nº 3) in Sydney and in 45 minutes you are there. The ferry trip is a good way to see the Opera & Bridge from the water too.

Quantas

by SirRichard

I chose Quantas, the australian company, to fly from Madrid to Sydney, transfering in London & Bangkok. The flight takes in total 26 hours, but the planes are modern & confortable. There is a personal system of entertainement with a little screen in the back of the front seat. You have a wide selection of movies (more than 100), games, news, TV series, music... to make your flight more enjoyable. During the flight they serve several brakfasts, dinners, lunch and a series of gadgets like toothbrush, blankets, pillows...Flying with Quantas overseas you can get discounts in the inner flights in Australia.

Avoid Virgin Blue airlines, or any other Virgin...

by judithrosen

I will never fly on any Virgin-owned airline, ever again. They tout themselves as a discount airline and the ticket I bought (round trip from Brisbane to Townsville, in July 2009) was, indeed, cheaper than the competition-- at least when I bought it, that is! By the time I actually flew, they had charged so many fees that the ticket was actually more expensive than some of the others I considered. Virgin nickel and dimes you to DEATH. I paid the fee to bring checked luggage at the time I booked the ticket. However, at check in they have the scales set artificially low, they charge you $10 per kilo over the allowance, and they rush you to make a decision, saying "I am only allowed three minutes to check you in. What do you want to do?" This was after I had spent over an hour waiting in line to be checked in for a domestic flight, I still had security to go through, yet, and my flight was...

Cairns to Brisbane

by tropicrd

I actually disagree that the drive from Cairns to Brisbane is boring--There are so many wonderful places to explore-- driving south from Cairns you will find Innisfail--Mission Beach and Tully--Hinchenbrook Island--Ingham--Townsville and Magnetic Island. Do stop off at the Whitsundays and take in the outback and the scrub along the longer stretches of the highway you may find lots of animal life in the wild especially at dawn and dusk.If you have a co driver it is easier.Do turn off the main highway and visit a few of the old towns along the way --you will be pleasantly suprised.Yappon and Mackay area and Fraser Island are worth seeing.I have done this trip many times and still enjoy the contrast of the coast and inland outback drives.I agree to drive south regarding the sun in your eyes and always take plenty of drinking water. Have a nice trip.

Travel from Australia to Europe without flying

Get to Darwin in Australia and Perkins Shipping Group Pty operate a barge that runs Darwin-Dili-Singapore (and reverse) 3 times a month. check their website at www.perkins.com.au for schedules and contact details, you would have to ring up and arrange in advance for passage. This is not a luxury boat - it is a freight barge, sorry, I have no idea how much passage would cost. You could take this barge straight to Singapore (takes 13 days) or if you want to stay in East Timor for a while then get off at Dili and you can continue overland by taking a 12 hour bus from Dili to Kupang in Indonesian West Timor (check conditions to see if the border is open) and get on a number of boats leaving Kupang and heading to other Indonesian islands (check www.pelni.in) for routes, timetables and prices).Continue using Pelni ships island hopping your way through Indonesia (and buses on larger islands such...

Swan River Cruise, Western Australia

by hopang

Take a leisurely cruise between Perth and Freemantle along the Swan River which is the largest river in Perth, Western Australia. This is a popular activity for local and foreign tourists arriving in Perth. Most Swan River cruise depart from Barrack Street Jetty in Perth and Port Freemantle in Freemantle. A roundtrip lasts approximately three hours and costs approximately US$30.00 per adult without meals. One of the popular cruise operators is Captain Cook Cruises. You may purchase cruise packages which include lunch or dinner. The boat will cruise along Millionaire's Row where you will be able to witness large mansions, villas and bungalows along the banks of Swan River. The boat will cruise through other areas such as the Lucky Bay, the Freshwater Bay and numerous inlets. Swan River flows directly through the City of Perth.

Driving in Australia

by ValbyDK

We had no problems, but be very careful driving in "Road Train Land"... Some road trains can reach a length of up to 50 meters, with up to three trailers, so treat them with care and respect. Give them all the space they need.Animals (kangaroos, wombats and emus) may also run across the road; be ready to use your brakes.

Travelling by land

by Josilver

Other than flying there are two main bus companies that will take you up the coast1st is Oz experience which is a hop on hop off network especially for travellers, here is the web sitehttp://www.ozexperience.com/The second is Greyhound - they are not quite as scary as what I have heard about in canada, but they are used by tourists and average people going to smaller towns between the large cities. This is their web sitehttp://www.greyhound.com.au/Hope this helps. Jo
