Thrifty Car Rentals

by Raven72

DO NOT BOOK CAR HIRE WITH THRIFTYI recently rented a car with Thrifty. My daughter left her wallet in the back seat. We contacted the Thrifty 1300 contact number and after 2 hours my call was still not answered. Eventually I called other numbers (at greater cost to myself as these were not the cost of a local call). The wallet was never recovered.I then cancelled my future reservations with Thrifty. When I called AVIS my call was answered immediately. My advice - call around and see how long it takes for the hire car company to answer your call. Because if you really need assistance, you'll need it straight away - not two hours after you dial their number....

Travel on weekdays

by unaS

If you can schedule travel during the week, Virgin Blue airlines has some fantastic 1/2 price Tues/Weds/Thurs flights, especially early, early am or late at night.Do spend some time trying alternate dates and hours - you'll be surprised at the price differences!Of course they are a budget airline, so carry your own snacks on board with you!

Sunbus in Queensland

by JLNomads

The Sunbus system is the bus system that runs throughout the sunshine coast. It also takes you to train hubs, so that you can catch rail rides throughout Australia. The system is pretty good here. Apparently it used to be horrible, but now seems to run pretty well on time and the buses are very clean. The drivers are very helpful, and friendly. You can get your tickets at ticket booths (which are rare to find), purchase your ticket with the driver, or you can get a "go" card that puts money on like a debit card. Treat the "go" card like cash, and don't lose it. Everytime you get on or off a bus you just touch it to a machine and it takes your fare cost off the balance of your card. It is relatively new, so they have some quirks, but it is better than carrying cash.It is fairly cheap to ride the bus, and if you can avoid peak times, you can travel at a discounted rate. If you are a...

The Hume Highway

by iandsmith

The Hume Highway is Australia's busiest and will only get busier. It is the most direct link between Sydney and Melbourne. However, there are times when you're driving along that you might choose to pull up and savour something. Such as a lovely Devonshire tea place, some historic buildings or, you might be travelling in spring and come across these sort of views, taken between Gundagai and Albury. The plant is called Paterson's Curse because it can make animals bloat should they eat too much while it's blooming. However, every cloud has a silver lining and the apiarists love it and you can probably see the reason why in pic 5.

Around Sydney transport

by MayaWilmot

I bought a weekly transportation ticket which includes traveling on bus, train and ferry and i find it an ultimate money saver. i got the red zone ticket for aud35 which covers mainly all the tourist attractions around Sydney. Even if you need to travel in a different colored zone (like to the blue mountains), inform the ticket master that you have the red zone ticket they would cut around aud2 from the original ticket price. Thats not much but what the heck : )You can purchase the ticket at the tourist information center at circular quay.

Airlines

by tiabunna

Australia’s main airlines are Qantas and its discount subsidiary Jetstar, and Virgin Blue. Qantas is mainly a “full fare” airline, but does provide some discount seats. Jetstar was created primarily to match the arrival of Virgin Blue and operates to all major cities except Canberra, plus quite a few holiday destinations: it is very much a ‘budget/minimum service’ airline and operates, at some destinations, from secondary airports. Virgin Blue began as a discount airline and still provides some good discount seats for early bookings, but has moved toward the mainstream airline category: they are noted for their friendly (often humourous) cabin staff. The main regional airline is Regional Express, usually just known as "Rex". A new discount airline, Tiger Airways is commencing operations within Australia in late November 2007 - it is owned by Singapore Airlines, Ryanair and others, and...

We hired a Thrifty car in Darwin, came out from our hotel at Kakadu and found a flat tyre. We changed the tyre and returned the car to the airport They charged us $109 for a replacement tyre. The tyre was far from new- what a scam.

Underage Car Hire for 18 year old driver

by Imeandmyself

I recently went on a holiday and had booked a rental car with a big company. When I arrived at the Gold Coast, the staff were extremely rude as I was only 18 years old and would not help me at all. I did not get a car from them even though I had booked the hire car for my holiday almost four months in advance. I looked everywhere as I did not want to spoil the holiday for me and my girlfriend. We had saved for over a year for this special time.On the Gold Coast, I accidentally found a car hire company called All Age Car rentals who rent cars to Drivers from 18 years on and they were extremely understanding and saved our holiday from disaster. If anyone looks for hiring a car, for young drivers and families, I would certainly say "Go All Age Car rentals". you are great.

Getting around cities and surrounding areas

by tiabunna

Although you will find public transport adequate around inner areas of the major cities, beyond those inner zones you will not find anything like the frequency of public transport services that you would find in (say) Europe. There just isn’t the population to support them. On the other hand, inner city parking can be problematical or expensive in city areas, so I’d suggest using public transport to get around major cities: make life easier for yourself by finding accommodation within the city and near transport. If all else fails, you can always take a taxi!Having your own transport comes into its own in the regions around cities. Although you will find good public transport between cities, if you wish to visit (eg) the Blue Mountains behind Sydney, the Border Ranges near Brisbane, any of the winery districts, or the sights of Tasmania, you will need to have the use of a vehicle. The...
