Planes, trains and automobiles

by tiabunna

You won’t see a great deal from 10,000 metres, but flying is the most efficient way between Australian cities. I know I keep beating the drum about distances, but consider this. From Melbourne to Sydney is about 900 km by road following the most direct route (allow two days without time for any sightseeing): then it is another 1000 km from Sydney to Brisbane. But Brisbane is only at about the midpoint of the eastern coastline, so you would still be facing another 1700km drive to Cairns! Maybe you have plenty of time and would like to experience the drive and see the country? That’s a reasonable thing too, just be sure to allow plenty of time for sightseeing and relaxing – too many visitors from overseas are caught unaware by the demands of long drives. On the other hand, driving from Melbourne to Cairns will take a week, preferably longer. If you add up the accommodation, fuel and hire...

Buscompanies

by cavale

If you are considering travelling around OZ, the most common way is by bus. The most known bus company is Greyhound, and they are also the only company that goes everywhere in the country. HOWEVER, if you are ONLY travelling the east coast, I must recommend PREMIER MOTOR SERVICE. They have bus routes from Sydney all the way to Cairns in the north, and from Sydney to Melbourne. They stop in the same towns, and they are about HALF the price of Greyhound´s!! So check it out. You can save allot of money.Their website is quite old and primitive- don´t get scared. I travelled with them many times.

Too vast for coach travel!

by unaS

I normally travel by coach. Australia is too vast! Would have spent nearly 1/2 my 3 weeks in OZ on the bus. After a lot of searching I decided that for domestic flights Virgin Blue had the best deals. Great budget airline. They use the regular airports, so no out-of-the-way airport problems. If you can be flexible there are lots of really cheap flights, like 50% less, if you adapt your days and hours. Tuesday – Thursday are always cheaper, likewise certain hours. Spend some time on the site checking out the different possibilities. The short hops we took were all in small planes - 1/2 the size of one compartment in a 777. Seating was comfortable, 2 rows of 2 seats only. Service is poor to non-existent on the plane (except for the sales attempts), but they don't mind at all if you get up to fetch yourself an extra glass of water. Bring your own food and drink or be prepared to pay extra for...

Going to Austrialia from Europe

by a5floor

Going to Austrialia from Europe, the best transport is by plane. I went with Qantas/British Airways. The main flyingcompany was Qantas, but at several parts of the flight they let it do British Airways. In Australia you can take different kind of transportation: car, motorcycle, bus or plane. It are very long distances between the cities. I took between Melbourene & Canberra and Canberra & Sydney the bus. Between Sydney & Brisbane I took the plane (Qantas).QANTAS stands for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.

By Bus

by filipdebont

Most of the transfers during our roundtrip we did by bus. This service was organised by the Australian travel agency: Wayward bus.Their motto was : Let others Rush . . . .It was a small bus with a trailer for our luggage and the camping gear. Our group (20 men) just fitted in the bus. There was not much room left, so with our day backpacks (with our photo equipment), sometimes it was a bit of a search how and where to put your feet in order to survive the long journeys. But the advantage of this small bus was that it was suited to drive along the long dirt roads towards the red centre.During our trip we had to change 3 times :- The first bus brought us from Sydney towards Alice Springs.- The second brought us from Katherine to Darwin- The third bus picked us up at Cairns Airport and brought us to the city centre (and at the end back to the airportFrom Alice Springs towards Katherine we...

CHECK AIR FARES IN AUST

by Rumi-fan

I traveled from Syd to Melb for $ 79 each way on JetStar. Great aircraft Airbus A320, new, clean, no frills, no service, but for that price and only 1 hour flight, who needs a meal!! always compare prices between the 3 major carries in Aust: Qantas, Virgin & JetStar (Qantas no frills arm). If you are here for sometime, subscribe to each airlines "email alerts" for cheap flights. They often come through at midnight and if you are up and surfing web you can see flights for as low as $49.

Flying Cathay

by filipdebont

The Australia roundtrip was organised by a Dutch travel agency (Djoser), so our trip started at Schiphol, Amsterdam airport. We did fly with Cathay Pacific Airlines via Hong Kong towards Sydney Australia.Flight scedule:12/07 : Amsterdam - Hong Kong : departure : 13.15 - arrival : 7.50 (flight time 11.20 hours)13/07 : Hong Kong - Sydney : departure : 09:00 - arrival : 21:10 (flight time 9 hours)08/08 : Sydney - Hong Kong : departure : 16:15 - arrival : 22:25 (flight time 9 hours)13/08 : Hong Kong - Amsterdam : departure : 00:15 - arrival : 06:30 (flight time 12 hours)I changed my flight on the way back to a stop-over flight as I wanted to visit Hong Kong. The flights by Cathay Pacific were very punctual, and the service was very good, a friendly staff, plenty of drinks and food.

Qantas

by aussirose

The quickest way to get around Australia is to fly. There are two competitive airlines to choose from Qantas and Virgin Blue. Qantas is the most expensive but they do have some good travel specials from time to time.

4WD - territory

by MichaelFalk1969

Some australian national parks do not have roads but just 4WD-tracks, for example Fraser Island or Kakadu National Park. If you have no 4WD experience, I recommend you book an organized tour. For most of the national parks, a normal car is all you need.

Kangaroo Island Ferry

by MichaelFalk1969

The ferry to Kangaroo Island starts in Cape Jervis south of Adelaide (ca. 1 1/2 hours). You have to reserve ahead (at least a few days before), as the ferry fills up quickly. The ferry ride takes 50 minutes. Look ot - when you arrive at Kangaroo island there is a penguin colony right at the harbourfront.
