Don't enter private property!

by darthmilmo

I rode the bike all day for over 35 kilometers around the Tweed Valley. Among the places I visited today was Disney rock, a mini-Ayer look-a-like sitting in the middle of a sugar cane field. There is an interesting scare-crow guy with a "Prohibited to Trespass or climb the rock" sign... It’s hilarious :). At first look, I wasn’t sure what to make of this?!? After learning more Australian history, I figured out that it represents Ned Kelly, one of Australia’s infamous outlaws. He used to wear a similar shield around his body to protect him from the bullets. Look closely and you’ll notice the handicap: no protection for their legs!

Trekking hazards: always follow the warnings!

by darthmilmo

I was hiking down the lovely Mackenzie falls and Gorge Feeling when the following happened. Feeling adventurous, I crossed the river via the rocks, rather then the bridge. As I crossed through, my footing came loose and for a minute there I saw myself falling down to the rocks in a deadly angle. It's funny how your mind goes into overtime on these precise moments of agony. You just start thinking about the consequences and know that regardless of what happens, it will hurt big time. Instinctively, however, my other foot landed on the ground and managed to swing my body back. Hence, I managed to rebalance myself as I set over the rock. Phew! That was a close call! If I had fallen down into the rocks from that angle, I would have landed right into the side of my body, probably breaking an arm, a leg, and, gulp, maybe even my skull. Ironically, just as I was nearing the other edge of the...

Bushfires

by colin_bramso

During our summer 'fire season' the bush can very easily burn. There are rules and regulations during this period, notices showing the level of fire danger, sometimes total fire bans are declared. You must obey the regulations, otherwise you are endangering yourself, the bush, the wildlife and potentially hundreds of lives. See my Wollongong page for the story of the 2001/2 fires which destroyed over one million acres of bushland and nearly two hundred homes.

Driving in the Outback

by keeweechic

If you intend to drive in the outback, please do your research and abide by all warnings and signs that you see. Notify someone of the route you are taking. Check to make sure your vehicle is all up to scratch before you set out. Give way to Kangaroos, they are faster than you. Carry plenty of water. Never do the trip alone, always have someone with you. Be wary of heavy rain in the outback, you could easily become bogged in mud. Never leave your vehicle if you encounter trouble. If possible, carry a radio. In the outback you may see no one for hundreds of miles. If you get into trouble and don't have a radio - burn a tyre. The smoke can be seen for many miles and will hopefully bring help. Best advice - go prepared and well advised.

So busy checking out the skyline that I didn't

by unravelau

remember my face. All right so it is really only spring but it was a very hot and sunny spring day..........too hot and sunny to be walking and snapping with gay abandon, all of the beautiful sights around the harbour at the quay. No 30+, no hat and plenty of sunburn.....................so I hope that I like my photo's. Here it is Friday and I burnt myself on Monday and my forehead is still looking like a stop sign. This shot of the Sydney Skyline taken from the Botannical Gardens and catching a shot of the Centrepoint tower.

Ozone

by tini58de

Ozone is a real danger especially in this part of the world. The wicked thing is, that you don't see it - but it sure is there and can be quite harmful to your health!!!Use powerful sunscreen, wear long-sleeve shirts, use good sunglasses - and avoid too much strain in the heat!

Creepy Crawlies...

by CandS

Most likely you have heard that Australia has lots of creepy crawlies...deadly spiders and snakes etc...Luckily not so many people at all ever die from these things... You are more likely to be hit by a car or fall off a cliff than be bitten by a 'deadly creature' in Australia. :)Take the necessary precautions though, don't go playing with snakes or spiders and watch out if you're collecting wood for a camp fire etc. Afterall, I'm still alive and never been bitten... :) You will be fine too! :)

Stop, revive, survive

by Mez77

I'm not sure what the fatality rate on roads is in other countries, but every year, especially Easter and Christmas, so many people lose their lives on the road. The government runs a "Stop, Revive, Survive" campaign where you can get a free drink and snack at regular stops along main highways. If you are doing a long trip by car, please ensure you stop and have a break every two hours.

Our Ozone Layer is thin!! Slip, Slop, Slap.

by Mez77

Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. This is a jingle advertised every summer in Australia. We have the highest incidence of Skin Cancer in the world so we take our skin care very seriously. Please make sure to cover up in our sun as out Ozone layer is very thin and offers little protection from UV.
