"Thorny Devils"

by smoox

Now these animals - 'thorny devils' they are called - do exist, but you won't see much of them. They are really tiny little desert creatures which live in the Red Centre - but they can grow to an enormous size once you work on the picture a little... ;-))

Substitutes

One danger for travelers is, of course, a broken heart since not every activity is for everybody. Diving down to the Barrier Reef, climbing Ayers Rock - some people just can't do it. As for me, I helped my Mum (78!) and sister, who travelled with me but did't go up, a little and placed them on top of the 'Rock'. ;-))

Animal Crossings

by Robert11729

On alot of country roads there can be wombat's....kangaroo's....emu's crossing the road they even may be standing still in the street. I strongly advise you not to beep at the kangaroo's they will literalily will jump on the roof of your car...they are very protective animals....best thing you can do if you cant get by is to wait until they leave usually when they see a car approaching they should get up and move off the street.

Sharks: Yes, there are Great Whites

by TashieKitten

Sharks: Yes, there are Great Whites in Australia. From what I understand though, they are in South Australia in the colder waters (as they also hang out in the chilly waters near San Francisco and the cold waters of South Aftrica.) Actually, I found sharks to be somewhat afraid of me while underwater. They were attracted to the lights of the back of the dive boat yet when you shine a flashlight on them the swim away as only a shark can. Really really cool.

Bushfires

by Kate-Me

In pre-white settlement times, the Aborigines would light controlled bushfires in Australia, as many of the plants and eucalypts relied on fire to crack open their seeds/seed pods, and to regenerate.Controlled burn offs are still done today to remove dense undergrowth and try and prevent fire hazard.Bushfires are a huge hazard in this country and a lot of care needs to be taken - ie not to drop cigarette buts in the open air, and when lighting a camp fire in the great outdoors. Sadly, many of the huge bushfires we have had in recent years have been deliberately lit by 'fire bugs'. The devastation bushfires cause is just shocking, and the 2003 fires in Victoria, Sydney, Canberra and Tasmania are the worst in 100 years. Here is a pic of what a eucalypt tree looks like when it's regenerating after fire. The trunk and branches are overcome by these vine like leaves, which in time will...

Spiders and Snakes

by Kate-Me

Australia has a wide variety of snakes, among them some of the most venomous in the world. There are very few non harmful Australian snakes but unless disturbed they won't trouble you.Of more concern are spiders, of which we also have many venomous varieties. The most common ones you'd be most likely to encounter include the Red Backed spider (small and black with a red patch on its tail). The worst household spider in Victoria is the small white tailed spider. It ranges in length from 1 - 2 cms and is long in shape with a long tail, rather than being round like most spiders. It is easily identifiable by the tiny white tip on the tip end of its tail. I recommend if you see one you kill it immediately (fortunately they aren't fast movers and are easy to kill). I believe there is no real anti-venom, and most people who have been bitten don't realize until a range of very bad allergic...

Driving warning

by Kate-Me

Warning if driving: Australian road laws have been recently tightened. Speeding can be very expensive if you're caught. You only have to be 3 km over the limit and you'll be fined Lets face it, whose speedo's are that accurate??Locals mutter a lot about revenue raising...this is a very unpopular law. Speed cameras can be anywhere, but most often police car radar, roof mounted. (And watch out for the old 'speed camera hidden behind the street rubbish bin' trick too). Also very strict guidelines about wearing seatbelts - large fines for non compliance here too.

Dangerous Animals in Australia

by mustaine_rocks

Australia is full of dangerous species, including scorpions, snakes, Parallysis tick, ants, bees, and cane toads. Many of these animals are VERY venomous, and can kill. Be very watchful while on the Outback, and always check your shoes for scorpions before putting them on. Also, stay away from kangaroos, which are very territorial and can be aggressive.

Crocodiles

by iandsmith

Yes, they are primaeval, yes, they will eat you (after they've stored you in an underwater burrow to rot for a while), and yes, most people want to see one.Bland though it may be to some, without question the safest way is a crocodile farm. They can be found mostly in Queensland (Steve Irwin's is on the Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane) and the Northern Territory. If you want to see them in the wild, you may wish to take a river cruise, especially in the Northern Territory, where crocs expect you and will leap out of the water to take pieces of meat.If you want to see one by yourself, the risk is yours. Going into their territory, i.e. the water, is asking for trouble, as several tourists have found to their horror. They are a protected species so shooting them is not an option. If you're on a riverbank you're not safe either. Remember, a lot of their prey is snatched off just such a...

Australia had very strict laws against driving under the influence of alcohol. The limit is 0.05 (about 1-2 drinks for most people) Fines for speeding and other offences usually double at holiday times.
