Swim between the flags!

by emerald125

Most popular Australian beaches are patrolled. Make sure to swim between the red and yellow flags. These areas have been chosen because they are the safest places. If you do get into trouble raise your hand above your head and wave it.

The Outback IS dangerious

by emerald125

The dangers of travelling in the outback are not over- stated. It really can be extreamly dangerous out there. Never go bushwalking alone.. always leave details of your route when driving in the outback. Always carry drinking water and food with you. Hats and sunscreen are absolutely necessary for a comfortable outing.

Danger! You might fall in love with Australia!

by pilgrim55

Australia is one of our favorite places we have visited. The Aussies are great people with warm hearts, a super sense of humor about themselves and life in general. They will go the extra mile to help you every time. Plus, it is mostly an undeveloped country -- with huge expanses of wilderness, unusual flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world. The city of Sydney is one of our favorite cities -- right up there with Paris and San Francisco. Very beautiful, very cosmopolitan, clean, safe, vibrant. We can hardly wait to go down under again!

Flooding in the North

by chris_i79

When travelling in Northern Queensland be prepared for extreme weather. We had planned on driving back to Cairns in the morning....Unfortunately it poured all night long and rivers overflowed onto the roads. If you rent a vehicle get a 4wd truck not a camry like we did!

Coming here in Summer is great, but beware bushwalkers, as Australia is a sun-burnt country, this resorts to many fires, especially out in the bush, read current fire warnings, and watch out from accidently staring a fire.

Use a lot of sun cream because the sun is very intensive and you will burn like hell. Skin cancer is one of the most widespread sicknesses in Australia.

by mikerippon

Australia is a relatively safe place to travel to. There are snakes and spiders, but you dont see them unless you go to bushy places etc. So if you do go to places where these animals may be, then common sense should prevail.

by jake22

The sea snakes are supposedly deadly, but I have seen divers play with them. The have very small teeth like a coral snake and must chew to get the poison in. They are reportedly very docile and allow handling without getting angry. I will leave that to others.

by smoox

Road Trains are the most frequent vehicles on the Northern Territory highways. Since there is no speed limit in this part of Oz (at least: there wasn´t any in 1998), you can rush along the roads. But beware of the Kings of the Road: They are NOT as fast as you, they are long, and they are wide. Which the roads are not. So don´t go flying into the bush while overtaking one of these monsters!

I read somewhere that...

by Dominiques

* I read somewhere that Australia is the country with the highest criminality rate. I think the autor of that article must've been drunk. We didn't notice any of that. I cna't even imagine it's true.* Only thing I would advice is, when you hire a car, is to limit your driving to 350 kilometres a day. Otherwise, it can be very heavy. Also follow the designated route. I wanted to make a short cut through a rain forest one evening and we got lost. The tank was running empty, we had no more radio reception, there was even no more real road. Eventually, we got where we wanted to be and we even saw kangoroos passing by in our headlights, as well as wombats. It's fun to tell the story now, at the time it's wasn't that much fun. It's a good test for a relationship, I have to say. We passed without a problem.* When you hire a car & you're from Europe, please watch your speed. Speed limit is 110...
