Crime

by keeweechic

Violent crime is low; however, foreigners are targets for pickpockets and purse snatchers, especially at airports. Vehicle break-ins are common. Travellers, especially backpackers, should ensure that their valuables are secure against theft, particularly in crowded places. The New South Wales police have advised travellers to be particularly cautious in the Kings Cross District of Sydney as there have been violent attacks on backpackers. Robberies of safe-deposit facilities are common at inexpensive hotels and hostels. Women should not hitchhike or travel alone after dark.

crocs alert!

by eelaine

when visiting the national parks up in the nothern territory, look out for crocodiles.. i was told that some are okie but others are pretty territorial and will attack if you disturb them.. the one here (i know that it's almost impossible to see it in the pic..) is in the billabong in litchfield.. this is the fierce one! ;)

by Saret97

Do not underestimate the heat and sun. Drink water even if you don't feel like it's necessary.Drive carefully in the outback. I've seen quite some serious accidents. Driving gravel or sandy roads for hours and hours makes you loose your concentration at moments you can't afford it. Also be prepared for more than one flat tire. Take at least 10 liters of water per person with you in case you have to wait for 24 hours for help.

by Radix2

When arriving in Australia, make sure that all cheeses, meats and other organic items are declared at Customs and Quarantine. Australia is still largely a Primary industry country, and things like CKJ (Mad Cows Desease) and the like have not reached our shores as yet. Please don't be the one to introduce a nasty. Thanks ;-)

Like the United Kingdom and...

by Radix2

Like the United Kingdom and many of it's ex-Colonies, Australians drive on the LEFT side of the road. Which is the right way... lol Is that going to confuse you? Just remember - the same as the UK...Remember also that this is a large country and drivers should take a break every couple of hours to revive themselves. Speed limit is 100kph on most highways, 110kph on freeways and normally 50-60kph in residential areas. These speed-limits are rigidly enforced. An exception to the open-road speed limit is to be found in the Northern Territory (unlimited). But the roads themselves will limit how fast is safe to drive.

by Radix2

If travelling to the 'outback', make sure you tell someone when you are leaving, what route you are taking and when you expect to arrive at the destination. Call them upon arrival. Carry water, food and if you can afford it, a good CB radio. hehe. Really - the chances of you breaking down are pretty slim, and the routes you are likely to travel are also well travelled. But this is all just common sense. You will be passing through areas where it is 100's of kilometers to the nearest help. If you break down DO NOT leave the immediate surrounds of your vehicle. A car or van is much easier to find than a single thirsty and lost person. Its not gloom and doom. You will love it if you take the simple precautions listed above. Enjoy.Just to clarify - you can survive for around 30 days without food. But 48 hours without water will kill you. You cannot walk much more than 100km in 2 days on flat...

crocodiles live in north Queensland and the northern territory whilst dingoes can be found almost anywhere and jellyfish and stingrays are also up the northern coasts..i forget what months they hang around though...i think its late spring.

by gtmwander

Perhaps the main watch out is that we went in February and toured the Northeast cost, which is during the hot summer monsoon season when the box jellyfish are out in full force. The box jellyfish are typically within a few miles of shore. There are netted swimming areas marked off and you should probably where a suit or use pantyhose if snorkelling in shore areas. Snorkelling out on the reef is generally ok as you are far enough out from shore.Ideally, the Australian summer is the perfect time for touring southern Australia and save the Queensland tropics for winter. C'est la vie.

by iandsmith

I love our beaches and so do the tourists. There is only one small problem. Each year in Australia more visitors die in the water than anywhere else. This includes inland waterways as well. However, the major cause is people's lack of understanding of how a beach works. You need to know that currents are constantly at work, tides are ebbing and flowing, waves vary in size and there are things out there that sting. Please, if you wish to enjoy the beach, spend a little time before hand with a lifeguard or surfer to better know what's happening and what to do in case you get caught in a rip (don't fight it!).Hope this helps someone. The pic is taken from Donbogan headland (northern N.S.W.) looking south.

by fast_lane1

The Outback has bugs. Survivor was a joke. There is no way those people would have survived on their own in the outback. Too many poisonous spiders, snakes, etc. And they would never have been able to hold a conversation without swatting a fly every few minutes.
