by Philadelphia

If you are fortunate enough to drive a car while in Oz you might want to think twice before venturing out after dark, especially once you get a little ways out of the city. I saw more wildlife jumping, crawling, rolling, or flying out from the corner of my headlights than anywhere else in Austrailia. Many locals, especailly in the outback, just take it for a given that you don't drive at night.

This is Australia, so your biggest worries shouldn't be thiefs, muggers and all that stuff (even though they are there like in every country). There are more serious dangers, like the sharks, the snakes, the spiders, the jellyfish, the salt water crocs, the blue ringed octopus, but even these won't be a big threat to you. If you go by the rules, you even won't see them, or if you do, there is no danger at all.The biggest danger in Australia is the Sun, almost no ozozne anymore, so whatch those rays

by bearsister

I think the best time to visit is in June because during the summer time, there's a lot of fly. They're not the normal fly, they're very big. If you find the koala from the souvenir shop, you'll find that they wear a hat with some strings around it. It's to avoid those big fly!!!

by RSM79

Working at a hostel for food and accomodation without a working visa is illegal. I got kicked out! And no amount of crying was able to convince them that I should be allowed to stay. By the way, working for food and accomodation on organic farms without a working visa is LEGAL. I asked immigration.

Cassowary warning signs at Mission Beach ,Far North Queensland. These signs, erected by the local road authorities are not to scale. An uninformed traveller who has never seen a cassowary, may well be hurtling down the road ,watching the tree tops, awaiting a giant 6-8 metre high elephant sized bird to smash into their vehicle [as in the scale on the sign]. Cassowaries are however about emu or ostrich sized and an endangered species.

SNAKES - they are here and can be dangerous if you irratate them. But they aren't a problem if you just keep on walking. I live in Australia, have spent many holidays in the bush as a kid, live near a park that some snakes live but i have never ever come across one in my life except at the zoo. So they are around but very few people see them.

by Landad

Watch out when driving after 7 p.m. out of the cities – it is time that kangaroos start to be active and they jump suddenly on the street. When driving 120 km/h it is easy to hit one of them. If your car has no special protection at the front then it is very dangerous for you. Kangaroos seem to be not aware of danger and not afraid of the noise of engine.

by lamojicat

Try not to let go of your (hand)bags in public places. My sister's bag got grabbed from her lap at the Town Hall train station. In shopping centers, I've seen shoppers lose their shopping bags just because they let go while paying bills, looking at shop displays etc.

Snakes

by TashieKitten

Snakes: Australia has 8 of the most deadly snakes on the planet. I saw none of them on either of my two visits. Although, I did have the honor of holding the non-venmous Rainbow Python, the serpent which the Aborigonal Dream Time is based.
