Underwater Perils

by TashieKitten

If you scuba dive or 'duck dive' while snorkelling, avoid picking up any ice cream cone shaped shells. The Cone Shell (Conidae species) is poisonous. A probiscus will come out of the wide end and a barb will sting you. This can kill you.

Crocodiles

by TashieKitten

Crocodiles...ancient animals that most definitely should garner your respect. I learned so much in Australia about their crocs (meaner than their genetically identical cousins in the Nile) that I sound like a five-year old phenom spouting off croc facts. Things to know: They are ambush hunters...if you see one, it's too late. They can sit just under the surface of the water and you'd NEVER see them. They can feel the vibrations of animals close by.They can run between 10 to 15 miles per hour (17-25 kph). Wow! This animal is amazing. They are also able to propel themselves out of the water, for food, as it was demonstrated, several feet high. Say you climb a small tree...big deal! They replace EVERY tooth in their mouths 46 times in a life time. A crocodile has no musculature to OPEN its mouth, only to close it; this is why you'll see keepers enter enclosures with nothing more than a...

Jellyfish

by TashieKitten

Jellyfish: The most infamous of which is the box jelly. It is not typical to find them on the Reef, but closer to the shores, as they actually reproduce in the rivers and travel down stream for the ocean. They're around from October until April and consume small fish and crustaceans. Lesser known is the Irukandji jellyfish. On April 15,2002, CNN.com reported the death of an American, the second recorded death from this tiny jelly. There is no anti-venom because scientists haven't captured enough of the little creatures the make any.

The Street

by TashieKitten

Look both ways before crossing the street! Especially in a country that drives on the oppisite side of the road than some of you may be used to. It's amazing how ingrained that head turning to one side response is when you're about to cross...I even look both ways on one way streets in downtown Portland.

Everybody hears about all the...

by FireMike

Everybody hears about all the dangerous animals in Oz: 10 deadliest snakes in the world, red back and funnel web spiders, saltwater crocodiles, blue ringed octopus, and all sorts of sharks with the big three dangerous ones the great white, tiger and bull sharks. But none of these animals phased me in the slightest, in fact I had an extremely poisonous sea snake lick my hand, picked up a wild python, head butted a shark (small reef shark) and went looking for crocs in a little tin boat. The only animal that scared the heck out of me was the BOX JELLYFISH. They are found in the waters near shore of the northern half of of Australia's coastline from October to May. Often called simply 'stingers' there tentacles can reach 2 metres (6 feet) behind there bodies and they are tough to see. Some northern beaches have stinger nets to provide a safe spot to swim and diving is safe because the reefs...

by RTW-Martha

If you do the Australian outback tour, bring plenty of toilet paper! Also, wrap everything (clothes, cameras, etc.) in plastic bags to protect it from the desert sand. Bring mosquito repellent.Hiker's tip: baby wipes or moist towlettes are great for 'freshening up' during those many days you'll be without a shower!

by dreamworld

In Kakadu Natl Park : mosquitos and mosquitos and mosquitos are a nightmare !!!!!! You may watch out where you walk as we met several dangerous snakes. And of course, in Northern Australia, the legendary seawater crocodile is hungry......In the sea, box jellyfishes + other potentially dangerous underwater wildlife should not be neglicted. In SYDNEY (>>> famous opera shown with this picture <<<) we had some troubles with safety at hotel, but nothing really that unsafe,

by pollon

I was said not to overtake road trains and that they won't stop for any reason and the pressure wave when you cross one in the opposite direction is not pleasant if you vehicle is more than 2 mt high. But on the way to Perth a veeeeery kind roadtrain driver gave my campervan way signalling to overtake him in a stretch of the road that he knew was large enough. Well, after so many warnings about them I was really impressed!

The Northern Territory and the...

by pollon

The Northern Territory and the Kimberly region in Western Australia are home of the freshwater crocodile , which are considered to be relatively harmless and the saltwater crocodiles, also called salties, which are extremely dangerous. There are warning signs where more dangerous but treat all rivers, creeks and bays with extreme caution, be what aussi people call to be 'crocodile wise'!!

by kiwiwahine

There are two types of jellyfish (Stingers) that are found in the warm waters of QLD in the summer months from the end of September to the end of May. The Box Jellyfish or seawasp and the Irukndji can cause death. Swim in the nets. Vinegar is used to treat the site of a sting and can be found at regular posts along the beaches although victims will still require further treatment.
