When you are travelling by...

by ruudje31

When you are travelling by car, remember Australia is a very large country, and roadhouses/gasstations can be very far apart, especially in the outback. So be sure you're carrying plenty of fuel, water and supplies, and when your car breaks down stay close to it and wait for help, don't go wandering of.Or when it's your first visit to Australia, and you want to see the outback, join an organised tour. It's a lot safer and you will probably see more.

Kings Cross in Sydney is a cheap place for staying but isn't very safe. Don't be amazed if you see junkies dealing, find needles on the street or that they broke in to your car (they did in mine). It's also a red district area. It's a nice neighbourhood but watch out and done leave your stuff alone...

The Australian Black Fly. ...

by AKtravelers

The Australian Black Fly. Though not dangerous, it is the most annoying insect that doesn't bite that I've ever encountered. On hot days, they come out in droves to drink the moisture from your eyes, nose and mouth. On one 40 degree day, they were so numerous we finally surrendered our yabbies to them when eating outdoors. On cooler days, they weren't so bad, but they still were an occasional presence. On a few days in Adelaide, I felt like I had my own personal fly following me around. To reduce the annoyance, face into the wind so that they settle on your back instead of your face. Locals call the swatting motion to clear the flies from their head 'The Aussie Salute'. Click on the photo if you want to enlarge it so you can see all of the flies.

by dusk

Well Sydney is a really safe place actually. But like any city you should keep your wits about you. I was so comfortable in the place that I let my guard down and to pickpocketed.I blame it completely on my own silliness but well just a word of caution, you will fall in love with the people so easily you will just not think anything bad will happen!

Australia is really strict...

by dusk

Australia is really strict about bringing in agricultural products and food stuff into the country, since agriculture is a big industry here. So what you want to be really careful and do declare whatever you have like that. The customs guy actually was nice enough to let me bring in a bunch of roses in after examining it and cutting off the lower stems. You never know. I bcan't quite figure out how they rule or decide but just be foreright with them.

Tropical regions are found in...

by jackiehob

Tropical regions are found in Queensland Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. It is a wonderful area, even with the dangers of crocodiles, the dreadly box jellyfish, and sharks. The box jellyfish, which has enough poison to kill three adults, is usually present in Queensland's northern coastal waters between the months of October and May. Always ask the locals about the state of the coastal waters where you are. As for sharks, it’s always wise to check that the seas where you want to swim, snorkel or dive are safe. It sounds scary doesn't it, but it is most unlikely that you will see a shark or jellyfish, just really unlucky if you do.

by bdschobel

Don't drive at night outside cities! A kangaroo smashed into the side of my car, doing considerable damage (and costing me the deductible of 700 Australian dollars). It could have been much worse. The Australians know better. In general, the roads are worse than I expected. The population is just too small to justify huge highways like you see in the U.S. and Europe. Sharing 2-lane roads with gigantic 'road trains' (triple tractor-trailers) can be scary. I also got stopped for speeding, believe it or not, but didn't get a ticket!
