When travelling to remote tourist areas of the outback, it is essential to leave route details and expected time of return with the relevant local tourist authorities or police. Ensure that notification is given of your return.

Most visits to Australia are...

by Adeline_Foo

Most visits to Australia are trouble-free, but travellers in major urban areas should exercise caution at all times, especially when alone. Travellers should keep to the main streets and be vigilant when withdrawing money from cash machines. Travellers should also exercise caution in terms of personal safety while travelling on all forms of public transport.

That's Florence Falls at...

by moomoos

That's Florence Falls at Litchfield Park. It's beautiful. It's all swimming and picnic in places like this, but be careful. A week after i was there, some tourist guy had cramps while swimming in the Florence Falls pool and drowned. Most of the springs and falls are very deep, and this guy got sucked in by the undercurrent, and his body was found curled up. It's a sad story, but it is one which has to be told. The other warning is crocs. Loads of them around. Do not be part of their lunch. :)

As everyone knows, Australia...

by carstenj

As everyone knows, Australia is packed with venomous snakes (deadly), spiders, crocodiles (in the North) and wild Dingos and you should defintely take your precautions when travelling in the bush. However, do not be paranoid as you won't be wading in dangerous wildlife. The MOST dangerous wildlife is in my opinion the suicidal emus. Hitting one of those WILL smash your transport. Of course the kangaroos are just as eager to play chicken with you. When it happened to me, I had my mother with me on her first trip to the outback (she's European) and she was most impressed with the display put on for her...running down a bird the size of humans.

I would say that Australia is...

by Sarah97

I would say that Australia is one of the 1 tier country regarding the safe. Use your common sense, then it will be very safe. Just be a little bit careful about the notorious places such as Kings Cross and Red Fern in Sydney. But most of the times, women can feel safe walking at night.

by Russ_Stone

I've only been caught speeding anywhere once - New South Wales - it appears that the police spend a lot of time stopping people (I was only doing 120 KmH - about 70 mph) on a long open road with no traffic.

The Box jellyfish in Port...

by ccummins

The Box jellyfish in Port Douglas are the deadliest animal in the world. So... you cannot go swimming there during their Summer. Very strange to be on a gorgeous beach and see NO ONE in the water. If you take a boat further out to sea, theyare not a danger.

by Tenzin

At King's Cross, Sydney I made a silly mistake of changing Singapore dollars for Aussie at S$100 for just A$80. According to my mobile service's sms the exchange rate should be virtually 1 to 1. That meant I paid an interest of 20%. The rates are not as steep for US$ or British pounds. I suppose Sing dollar is just not liquid enough. I really should have changed enough back home.Driving is a pleasure but parking in Sydney downtown is not. It cost about A$4 an hour and you may not even get a lot easily. Public transport is a breeze though. However instead of paying A$39 for the Sydney Explorer for a 4day ticket, opt for the much cheaper Green card that locals go for. I paid A$37 for a 7 day pass and the only difference is just that the Explorer bus comes with commentary. Do note that the Green card is hardly promoted or advertised relative to the Explorer. So save where you can.

by Mengke

If you're travelling in outback mainland Australia (not Tasmania) make sure you have a full tank everytime you leave a petrol station. You never know when the next one might be. Make sure you have plenty of water as well, you can get pretty thirsty out there.

by rozehill

If you intend travelling long distances and stop to give a lift to any Aboriginal on the side of the road, you may discover there never is just one who needs a ride but there will be, for sure about 7 or 8 others of them hiding in the bushes and also wanting a ride, hahahha!!
