Swimming statistics – don’t be one!

by tiabunna

About 250 people are drowned in Australia each year. That makes drowning statistically one of the greatest risks in Australia. There are some very simple ways to avoid any risk. * Don’t swim after meals or, particularly, after drinking* Swim only at patrolled beaches, or in pools. At patrolled beaches, you will see flags such as those in the photo (taken at a museum display on surf lifesaving) – swim ONLY between the flags. Hopefully they will be further apart than they are in the museum photo! :-)* Don’t swim if the beach is closed (red flags) and follow any warning instructions.* Supervise children.* Don’t go out of your depth and, in the unlikely event you find yourself in trouble with a ‘rip’ (strong current) do not fight against it, allow it to carry you along the beach while you swim diagonally toward shore. Most of all, if you are in trouble, hold up your arm to signal for help.The...

More snake facts

by tiabunna

Snakes are uncommon in major urban areas, but as I’d like to encourage you to visit further afield, let’s go into more detail. It’s also a fact that, with rare exceptions, most people who are bitten by snakes are trying to catch or kill them. Of course, some people simply do not see the snake and walk on it, at which point it reacts in the only way it knows! The ways to avoid snakebite are simple: watch where you are walking if you are not in an urban area, avoid walking in long grass without good shoes or boots, and should you see a snake, don’t panic: just move away and give it a wide berth. If you do that, you’ll have no problems. Most of all, leave it alone! The photo shows a Copperhead (Austrelaps superbus), with a toxicity about equal to a Cobra, I found near our house. This species of snake is by nature a timid animal – they just want to be ignored to quietly go their own way. Let...

Snakes!

by tiabunna

I’ll bet you’ve heard about the exciting snakes found in Australia. In case you haven’t, Australia has something like 190 different species of snakes, of which 22 are at least as deadly as an Indian cobra and, of these, 16 are much more deadly - one (which luckily lives well off the beaten path) is the world’s most lethal snake. Do I have your attention now? The good news is that most visitors are unlikely to encounter snakes anywhere except in an enclosure at somebody’s zoo or animal park. You never know, the animal park might even encourage you to have your photo taken with one – but you can be sure it will be from the entirely safe python family. So go ahead and be a devil, then you can amaze everyone when you go home. :-)Yes, every year Australia has about 3000 suspected snakebites, but most bites do not require antivenom treatment and, on average, snakebites result in only one or...

bad hygiene

by travelthrough

Unfortunately, hygiene is not thus advanced yet, but it is quite obvious as Australia is on the southern hemisphere such as many other poorer countries. Apart from mosquitoes and roaches, there are hardly any rubbish bins in cities and environment thus is very polluted.

Country of drugs

by travelthrough

Sadly but rightly, Australia is well known for drugs and its high and increasing number of youth being concerned with it. Almost every youngster has had drug experience in Australiaand is still suffering from it. Many Australians see it as a part of their "no worries"-attitudeto experiment with more or less soft and hard drugs. The effect is usually on the emotionallevel, most young Australians thus suffer from a lack of empathy and emotional introversion.Especially as a female traveler, you should take care of your drinks in bars and clubs, theymight get spiked for whatever reason. Melbourne, which considers itself as Australia's "arty capitaly" is especially concerned bythis phenomenon.

Roadkill

by MichaelFalk1969

It is not advisable to drive in the dusk or dawn in the rural areas, as Kangaroos and other animals are most active then. There is a much bigger chance one might hop on the street just in front of your car. Kangaroos, though cute, are not exactly intelligent animals. Blinded by the car lights they often decide to stay on the road instead of hopping off, and get run over. Ask your rental car company if damage caused by animals are insured.

High Airport Taxes and climbing....

by xuessium

There's no way to get around it - you have to pay the amount, like it or not...unless you are advocating entering Australia illegally. Now at A$250 AND CLIMBING. It wasn't like this so many years ago. Came Sep 11 and the tax suddenly surged. For that price, I REALLY do expect to see surface-to-air missiles guarding the airports. Borrowing Oz's latest tourism lingo: So where the bloody hell are they??

Australia: Fording Creeks / Rivers - by Bicycle

by Intrepidduck

If bicycle touring the Australian Outback there are numerous creek and river beds to cross, sometimes they may be inpassable, while in certain places safely fording them would be required. In flatter outer areas these are often dry for much of the year. Some road fording areas show indication to the depth of water passing with a metric guage. Do not attempt to cross if uncertain of the depth or when there is strong flow in these streams. Never set up camp in a creek bed during times of evident rain appears likely or has been forecast. Flash flooding is common every year, and it happens, people along with their cars and even caravans have been swept away with little prior warning. In the Flinders Ranges and Macdonell Ranges there are more permanant creeks and rivers where road crossings are made by a stone or cement fording route rather than a bridge. For cyclist this can present more of...

Rip tides

by supercarys

Whilst swimming at australian beaches, be sure to stay between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches as they have been marked by lifesavers as the safest place to swim. If you do happen to get caught in a rip tide (a strong current of water running back out to sea), swim parallel to the beach, don't try to fight against the current. That way you will swim away from the current and be able to swim back to shore. You can sometimes tell a rip tide by an area of water that is particularly sandy running back out to the ocean. if you see this, avoid that prea and swim further along the beach. NOTE: this doesn't mean the sandy area where the waves are crashing on the beach, but a large line of sand that goes quite a way back. If you can't see one of these, it doesn't mean there's no rip tide.
