Australia: Fording Creeks / Rivers - by Bicycle

by Intrepidduck

If bicycle touring the Australian Outback there are numerous creek and river beds to cross, sometimes they may be inpassable, while in certain places safely fording them would be required. In flatter outer areas these are often dry for much of the year. Some road fording areas show indication to the depth of water passing with a metric guage. Do not attempt to cross if uncertain of the depth or when there is strong flow in these streams. Never set up camp in a creek bed during times of evident rain appears likely or has been forecast. Flash flooding is common every year, and it happens, people along with their cars and even caravans have been swept away with little prior warning. In the Flinders Ranges and Macdonell Ranges there are more permanant creeks and rivers where road crossings are made by a stone or cement fording route rather than a bridge. For cyclist this can present more of...

Rip tides

by supercarys

Whilst swimming at australian beaches, be sure to stay between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches as they have been marked by lifesavers as the safest place to swim. If you do happen to get caught in a rip tide (a strong current of water running back out to sea), swim parallel to the beach, don't try to fight against the current. That way you will swim away from the current and be able to swim back to shore. You can sometimes tell a rip tide by an area of water that is particularly sandy running back out to the ocean. if you see this, avoid that prea and swim further along the beach. NOTE: this doesn't mean the sandy area where the waves are crashing on the beach, but a large line of sand that goes quite a way back. If you can't see one of these, it doesn't mean there's no rip tide.

Kangaroos

by supercarys

Whilst kangaroos are quite docile creatures that don't seem to mind people much, be aware that they are wild animals capable of defending themselves. If you corner a kangaroo, look out, they can kick out with their hind legs and give you a NASTY wound.Don't be afraid of them, they are cute and cuddly and like being fed by people, just don't be foolish and try to hug one against its wishes or something like that.

Box yellyfish

by didgeridorien

This yellyfish is also known as the sea wasp. The tentacles get up to 3 m long. You can get stung any time of the year, but October to April are the worst. Don't go swimming in the tropics during these months unless you've got a stinger suit. There always are notice signs up the beaches where these stingers are. If someone gets stung, you'll have to poor vinegar on it. You can always find vinegar for this purpose on the beach. Immediately call an ambulance, don't try to get the tentacles off and you might have to do some mouth to mouth.

Poisonous snakes

by didgeridorien

If you see a snake in Australia, don't go all Steve Irwin on it, that's how most people (men) get bitten. If you do get bitten, remember what the snake looked like, they'll need to know in the hospital. Also put bandaid around the bite, so the venom won't spread.

Australia: Watch Out for Roaming Wildlife!

by Intrepidduck

While travelling through the Outback take care when driving and look out for Kangaroos, and other free roaming wildlife running across the roads. Particularly at night or around dusk time when much of the wildlife is out and about. When tavelling by bicycle it's not such a problem due to the general speed you are travelling at, thus giving ample time for you and what ever else to clear the way. However the Emu, a large flightless bird, are super fast runners and quite erratic a times pacing to and throw, across ones path. At one point along the Maree Road in SA my travel companion Carsten and I had one curious Emu gun it along side of us, fortunately it was behind a wire fence. Weeks earlier along the Coorong, also in SA, I had a number of these birds chasing each other infront of me and racing across the road back and forth. However if you get to see them up close it's a great...

Wildlife

by CandS

You will see quite a bit of native wildlife in Australia if you are venturing out of the cities... I have managed to see wild kangaroos, emus, wombats, goannas, wallabies and koalas among other things... Just be careful though when you see these animals...they could hurt you if you get too close.

Beware the cute Australian animal

by cassiejoy42

All of our Australian animals are very cute looking - almost cuddly looking.Don't be deceived by how cute they look - most of our wild animals have extremely long claws and they can do some damage to a human being if threatened. They are not pets so don't be tempted to pick them up or cuddle them out in the wild.At some petting zoos or wildlife sanctuaries you may be able to hold a koala - at the discretion of the zoo keeper or safari owners. If in doubt leave them alone!Koalas have very sharp thumb claws and can damage you if they manage to scratch you. A kangaroo has very strong back legs and tail and if threatened they can do a fair amount of damage to a human. Emus are known to go a bit nutty if there is food laying around and they think they can get at it - or if they are used to being hand fed they will expect it from all humans and may get angry if they don't get offered food....

Cattle and suicide kangaroos on the road

by martin_nl

Driving through Australia seems to be very easy at first. The roads are virtually empty, they are straight forward and well signposted. However first of all they drive on the left side of the road, Australians drive very slow (!!!), and then there are all the animals crossing roads when you least expect it.All over Australia the cattle roams around freely. They are not protected by fences so they could well stand in the middle of the road when you approach. Also there are the suicide kangaroos. They sit beside the road, especially when it's dark and once you approach they jump in front of your car at the moment you are passing!! How stupid are these animals? The animal you really do not want to get under your car is a wombat. In their back they have this huge bone disc. When they get under your car they roll themselves up and completely ruin your car!!So drive safely constantly paying...

Swimming danger.

by colin_bramso

The sea is beautifully blue and very inviting, especially on a hot day. But it can be dangerous. Too many tourists get into trouble and too many drown. Swim on beaches patrolled by lifeguards, swim between the red and yellow flags, because the lifeguards watch carefully over that area and do as the lifeguards tell you. They are highly trained local people and they know the water, know where the dangerous riptides are.
