Please don't buy the ordinary Indonesian sarongs you can see everywhere, on every tropical island around the world.
Instead, buy some of the beautiful hand-dyed pareaus that are so inexpensive, and such an important cottage industry for the islanders. Some incorporate resist dye techniques, using leaves and such from their own yards for patterns; the colors are soooo delectable.

    Wigmore's waterfall -
    minus the water.

Wigmore's waterfall is not worth going to see. Travel guides will say you can swim there, but in fact, you're not supposed to. When we went there was no waterfall! The mosquitos here are truly fierce. As far as tourist traps go, this is about as bad as it gets in Rarotonga!

Stick to the coast! Or take a drive along the "Metua" or inner road. You will pass picturesque taro plantations and see another side to life on Rarotonga.

  • Tip Rating:
  • As the islanders are faithfull christians, everything stops on Sunday, expect for a few tourist shops and a few restaurants. So be prepared that you have a day at the beach, or snorkling, (this is what most people come for anyway)so you won't be bored while looking for something to do.
And Hitch-hiking isn't big on the island, most people will look at you as if you were crazy, then again why hitch-hike just rent a bike and you get everywhere.
And for all thye milk lovers, well when I was there one liter of milk was costing $5US, so you might want to skip drinking it on this holiday.

    Tourist Traps? What Tourist...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tourist Traps? What Tourist traps. No Disneyland here. The closest thing to a tourist trap would be the 'Flea Market'. The market runs every Saturday at 8:00 am at the west end of the main town of Avarua. The locals gather to sell everything including fresh baked cakes, pots of hot food, jewelry, plants, fresh fish and fresh fruits and juices. Clothing is also sold. WestPac Bank opens a branch on site. The locals also gather for conversation, to sample the food and purchase their goods they need.

  • Tip Rating:
  • No real traps! This is the Cook Islands after all!Rarotonga is the main tourist island and so can be a little more expensive but the locals enjoy visitors and are not there to rip you off.
The market up near the airport is worth a look on a Saturday morning, it sells fresh fruit and many wood carvings. I bought a wooden carving of Tangaroa, the Cook Islands god and is now proudly standing in my bedroom! This market is not a tourist trap but you can haggle for a few prices!

    Tour to Aitutaki
There is a day tour that takes you on a flight to Aitutaki. It's really pricey! $400.00. You leave at 8:00 AM and are back at 5:30. It includes lunch and an island tour ( the island is so tiny ...I question the need of a tour) It's a pretty expensive day.

Another maybe better plan is to fly return for $198.00 and then you would have the option of staying over night and having some time to see the island and maybe enjoy the sunset.
Air Rarotonga has 4 flights a day. $198.00 return.

buy groceries as far away from resorts as you can as the nearby stores have jacked up their prices to be in line with those of the resorts.
