Clear message by FletteMette Rarotonga is only 32 kilometres in circumference, and a scooter is a great way to get around. Before hitting the road, you need to get a valid Cook Islands driver's license at the Police Station in Avarua - if you aren't licensed to driving scooters or motorbikes at home, you need to pass a driving test, (basically driving 50 metres down the road without falling off the scooter) otherwise you just show your valid home country license. Cost: NZ10 if your license is valid for motorbikes An additional NZ5 if you need to take the driving test Bring a photo for your brand new license! :o) The license desk is open Monday to Friday from 08 to 15, Saturday and Sunday from 08 to 12. You can rent a scooter from several companies, including Island Car & Bike Hire in Arorangi, and Rarotonga Rentals near the airport. Do remember to drive on the left side of the road...!;-) Leave a Comment

Ready for Aitutaki..! by FletteMette Air Rarotonga will take you from the international airport at Rarotonga to many of the other islands in both the Northern and the Southern group of the Cook Islands: the destinations are Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia, Mauke and Mitiaro in the Southern group, Manihiki, Penrhyn and Pukapuka in the Northern group. The airline also offers very popular day trips to Aitutaki - but it's really worth spending more than just a few hours on this beautiful, friendly island..! The flight to Aitutaki takes around 40 minutes, and there are several flights from Rarotonga every day except Sundays, when there's only one flight. Tickets can be booked online, or at the travel agencys in Avarua, Rarotonga. Leave a Comment

View on Aitutaki from above by bijo69 Inter-Island flights in the Cooks are executed by Air Rarotonga. I recommand to book the flights by e-mail, you get better fares than via their homepage. Great thing: you just have to pay the ticket 2 days prior to departure! If you want to visit more than one island, ask for a pass. The Cook Islands by catalysta Air Rarotonga also flies to the Outer Islands. At this link on KiaOrana.com, just click on the name of an island to see map & information about it: . From the tiny uninhabited atoll of Manuae to Mangaia, the second largest island in the Cooks, you can visit the black pearl farm or the vanilla plantations, or even the migratory bird sanctuary on Suwarrow. To visit multiple islands, check into the current rates for a 30 day Paradise Island Pass. Whenever I think of flying over the Cooks for the first time, I always remember David Crosby's "Lee Shore", a haunting melody for all island lovers from his Crosby Still & Nash days: "All along the lee shore shells lie scattered in the sand winking up like shining eyes at me... From here to Venezuela there's nothing more to see than a hundred thousand islands flung like jewels upon the sea For you and me..." Leave a Comment

Island Hoppers by catalysta For the more adventurous & budget-minded who are determined to get to the outer islands by boat, you might check into Taio Shipping, the transport shipping line that services the Cooks. While there are no specific multiple island cruises within the Cooks that I know of, you might be able to arrange something through the friendly people at Island Hopper Vacations. To visit their website see below. Leave a Comment

Air Rarotonga plane loading at Rarotonga Intl by mtncorg Transport within the different islands of the Cooks is provided by the little planes of Air Rarotonga. They will fly you to and between Rarotonga, Mauke, Mitiaro, Atiu and Aitutake. They will also provide service to three of the islands in the northern group, but you should probably look very closely at this webpage: http://www.airraro.com/Presentation/Presentation1.aspx?ID=17&IDType=4 before proceeding with ideas in those directions. Also look at the excellent webpage covering the cook Islands, in general: http://www.ck/ Leave a Comment

A bus at Cook's Corner, Avarua by worldkiwi A regular timetabled bus service operates around the island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. All services start and finish at Cook's Corner, right in the heart of Avarua. There are two routes - clockwise and anti-clockwise round the island. Fares are simple to remember: $3 for a oneway ticket and $5 for a return trip. Tell the driver where you are going when you get on and he will drop you off there. The driver will sometimes call out the names of places that he is going to stop - which is very helpful... just make sure you yell back "yes". If you are catching the bus from somewhere else on the island, make sure you grab a timetable while in town. You will see the times that the bus passes certain key places on each route. You can then work out where those are in relation to you and either walk to them or just flag the bus down where you are. The bus will pick up people whereever they are. Of course, if you can see a bus shelter then you should walk to it out of consideration for the driver and other passengers. It is a bit silly when the bus pulls over to pick up people waiting 300 metres from what is clearly a regular bus stop! If you are carrying large backpacks or suitcases, you will be charged extra (usually a 'student' fare) for these. Be aware of that if you are using the public bus from the airport. Only the anitclockwise bus stops at the airport proper. If you want to catch a clockwise bus after arriving by plane, you'll have to go out of the airport car park and cross the road.
