Starry, Starry Night
Favorite thing: I'll teell you , there is something just magical about sitting out on a clear night and enjoying the star and moon lit skies in Micronesia... (and its not just the cigars and beers, tho' they certainly have their place....)
The lack of light and air pollution out here can really light up the sky with stars.... Staring out over the water on a perfect star lit evening really gives you at least a little taste of what it must have been like for the ancient Micronesian sailor to navigate this islands by the stars.... (pity they didnt have the cigar/beer combo back in the old days, tho'...)
The Father of Us All....
Favorite thing: Here is a plaque which is bolted to the deck of the Fujikawa Maru, which honours the man most responsible for developing the diving industry in Chuuk in the 1970's: Kimiuo Aisek.
Before that time, the shipwrecks here were mostly forgotten part of WW2 history. Largely through his efforts, Chuuk was established as arguably the premier wreck dive location in the world...
Twas a very good year....
Favorite thing: Hmmm, all these crates of bottles of booze, perhaps some can be salvaged.... Must look at the bottom to check the "born on date"... (most likely 1944, I would guess....)
Well the lids are already rusted off most of the bottles, so I guess we wont be any vintaged sake on the menu for tonight....
Favorite thing: Well, my cell phone dint work work a sh*t out here, and land lines were about $4 USD a minute...
They did have a surprisingly extensive underwater network of telecommunications however... (the equipment looked a bit antiquated and a tad water logged, tho'...)
Clown Fish ??
Favorite thing: Just when u thought it was safe to go back into the water !!!
Ugggh, thats got to be the biggest, ugliest clowfish I ever did see.... (I know, I know, I know,,,, and I'm the first to admit it.... Somedays I really need to sober up a bit, and take a hard look at my list of "friends")....
First Ever Underwater VT Meet....
Favorite thing: ... and the King is not one to shy away from a challenge.... hence here is perhaps the first ever underwater VT meet....
Strange though,,,, he wore his shades even underwater instead of the more traditional mask/snorkel sorta setup.... (I guess one should not question the judgement of the King....)
Favorite thing: Had the honour of meeting up with VT Member Eprez out in the lagoon....
The King was looking fit and trim.... (he apparently is on some sort of low carb regimen....) Had that 1968 comeback tour sorta glow about him.... (well, it might just have been the sun, or more likely the rhum for that matter....)
