Shallow reef channels, grottos and wall-like drop-offs in nearly every direction from Laiap's shores provide plenty of great snorkeling and fishing environs. Common coral varieties at Laiap include types of staghorn coral, great lobes of brain coral and star coral. Watch out for elkhorn and staghorn fire coral, which cause a mild sting when touched. The shallower areas are best for both snorkeling and spear fishing. Deeper areas are decent for scuba, though reef fish are not as diverse here as other places around Pohnpei. Green sea turtles and jelly fish are sometimes seen.
