    Andt Atoll

Beautiful dive site, this uninhabited coral atoll which is about 1.5 hour boat ride out from Pohnpei....

Great pass drift dives, dives along the outer reef, and also a number of caves, swim thrus and archways to be explored, all around an island that is the epitome of what you'd expect a deserted coral atoll to be....

    Just breathtaking....

    Langer Island

by kenmerk Written Jan 15, 2004

A stop off on Langer Island can make for an interesting diversion while in Pohnpei. Located about a kilometer east of the airport inside the barrier reef, this island once served as a sea base for the Japanese prior to World War II.

It is interesting to hike around and see the former gun emplacements here, as well as a large fuel storage facility that has fallen into disuse. Also you can find some relics of the past in the waters around Langer, old Sapporo beer bottles, and some moorings for the old sea planes.

The most interesting thing that I got to do out here was to talk to one of the older natives who was around during the war. He said that the Japanese kicked all the locals off this island and appropriated it for military use..

When the American Navy came by in 1944, he said the one of the first shells they fired was a direct hit on the Langer gun emplacements, which blew them hundreds of feet away.. (The Langer natives were said to be watching (and cheering) from their vantage poin on the main island....

If you get the chance, try to get out here for a look around.....

    Areu Wall

See the Giant Gorgonian Fans (10+ feet across) along Areu Wall...(among the largest that I have seen anywhere...)

During the few times that I have dove on this wall the visibility wasn't the best, though, I have seen the stray Manta or shark while looking over my shoulder away from the wall...(Nervous habit of mine...)

    Sokehs Rock

The 150 meter tall Sokehs Rock is the signature Pohnpei Landmark. Either climb to the top by the scary/slippery trail, or just enjoy the vistas at sunrise/sunset. (Nice sunset views from the restaurant at the South Park Hotel)

There are some old World War 2 vintage Japanese gun emplacements on top of the ridge. Just be careful as more than one tourist has fallen to their untimely demise....

    Poahloang Pass

A drift dive through Poahloang Pass on a high visibility day feels like floating through the Grand Canyon....

Best to come here on the incoming tide... The visibility will be much better, and the current is usually so strong that you won't even have to kick... Just stick your arms straight out, and pretend that you are Superman flying through the air....

    Diving in Pohnpei

When in Pohnpei, spend all the time you possibly can underwater... The bio diversity here is just unbelievable....

You are likely to see a whole range of marine life, from the biggest (sharks, mantas, great barracuda, napoleans, etc.) down to the smallest critters, like nudibranches and anemone shrimp, and if your lucky, it will all in water that is as clear and gin and tonic....

Here is one cavern in the section of Andt that they call the Grottoes.... If the waters are calm it is an amazing dive site... (often too much surge here for safe diving, tho'...)
