I did not move that much...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I did not move that much within the country.
I was based at Nadi city in Western part of Viti Levu island, where you have the biggest airport (and international one).
We did a 1 day excursion to the capital...Suva. Very very interesting if you want to really meet local Fidjian people. The government palace is worth to see (you can not enter but you can see it from the gardens), with their guards wearing traditional 'skirt' clothing.

    >>> the picture shows the entrance of the Presidential Residence in Suva, with the typical clothes worn by official Fiji police/security...funny

But the very very best place I've ever been could really be :

MANA island, small one, about 1 1/2 hours by boat from Nadi port. It's like a paradise....extraordinary beach and top top clear water full of sealife and really not crowded. You must go there if you can afford it (boats aren't cheap).
I did scuba diving off Mana island and that was probably the best diving site I've ever did (better than Australia Big Reef !). We saw whale sharks + hammer sharks + uncommon smaller fishes.

    Fiji General Tips Tip (Untitled)
  • Tip Rating:
  • My fondest memories of Fiji are the people and the scenery.

The people are very friendly, happy and accomodating. The Fijians love children and offer great baby-sitting services.

The scenery is postcard-like. I was actually foolish enough to take books to read on the beach. However, it was so beautiful, I didn't read a page. The beauty of the landscape is breathtaking and the ocean gorgeous. It was a truly memorable trip.

    Fiji General Tips Tip (Untitled)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The laid back feel! Do not expect anything to happen when they say it will, therefore, don't rush - you have plenty of time. They call if Fijitime, like no other time zone you've known. The people were warm and friendly, especially the kids!

  • Tip Rating:
  • Can't think of a 'Must' right now, My doc.s just told me to go away, and that was a stop over point on my trip to Australia. Much more, but it can wait.

I guess the warm weather, and warm water, and coral with colorful fish within 10 feet of the shoreline (shallow). The very small island I stayed on (no cars) it had one small tractor. The Island is called Beachcomber. I did not realize it, when I booked it, but it is a, well sort of a party island.

    Visit Beachcomber Island...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit Beachcomber Island resort during Feb or March each year for the 1/2 price diving.

This beautiful island is small enough to walk around in about 10 minutes but has a wide range of activities to keep you occupied.

Spend at least a few days on...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Spend at least a few days on the offshore islands. There are many small islands surrounding the two big islands: Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. My friend told me the Yasawa group is nice. But if you don't want to go too far, there are some island resorts near Nadi, it only took me half an hour by boat to get there. Another thing you must do is to visit Fijian village. Some villages on highland where people still live in bures.

The people, abosulte the people. My trip gave me lot of chance to interact with the people. Fijian are also curious and eager to learn about other cultures. Fijian are the most friendly people I have ever met. The great hospitality and their lovely smiles definitely made my trip a memorable one.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Visit a Fijian village. I happened to join a tour in Suva. We were taken to the upper stream of Navua River by motor boat. Then we visited a small Fijian village. There was a small church in the village with no electricity. The tour guide told us Christianity is the major religion in Fiji. The village people also sang us a song and performed their traditional Fijian dance to welcome our visit. The tour was a good deal as I took the bus to Navua to meet other tour memebers so they gave me a big discount.

The people, absolutely the people. When you are strolling on the street, eating in the restaurant or even swimming in the river, wherever you go, you hear the amiciable Fijian saying hello in their language 'Bula'. There are always smiles on their face. To a cosmopolitan gal from Hong Kong, this is very precious to me.
